Start at 1280×720, confirm that the game uses your fastest GPU, run the laptop from AC power, and target a stable 30 FPS before chasing obscure tweaks. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga can run acceptably on hardware near its listed minimum, but those minimum specifications are not a promise of smooth 60 FPS. Performance can vary by level, hub, display mode, laptop power limits, RAM configuration, and whether you are playing split-screen co-op.

This guide is for the Windows PC version, particularly Steam installations on older desktops, integrated-graphics systems, and entry-level gaming laptops. It prioritizes changes that are reversible and likely to matter: resolution, GPU selection, power and cooling, graphics settings, frame pacing, and only then configuration-file recovery.

  • Resolution: 1280×720, or the nearest lower supported option.
  • Window mode: Fullscreen first; test Borderless if fullscreen stutters or selects the wrong refresh rate.
  • Anti-aliasing: Lowest acceptable setting, or disabled if the GPU remains overloaded.
  • Textures: Medium if the GPU has enough VRAM; reduce them when you see texture streaming problems or memory-related hitching.
  • Effects and shadows: Low.
  • Motion Blur: Off, primarily for clarity and comfort.
  • VSync: Off while diagnosing performance; test it later if tearing is distracting.
  • Frame-rate target: Stable 30 FPS if 60 FPS cannot hold in the worst-performing areas.

Lowering resolution usually gives a GPU-limited system more useful headroom than immediately setting every option to its lowest value. Community testing has reported a noticeable improvement when moving from 1080p to 720p, but that is anecdotal and will vary by hardware and scene (Steam Community reports).

Can your PC run The Skywalker Saga?

The Steam listing gives these official Windows requirements:

Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i5-2400 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 Intel Core i5-6600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100
Memory 8 GB RAM 8 GB RAM
GPU GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Radeon HD 7850 GeForce GTX 780 or Radeon R9 290
DirectX Version 11 Version 11
Storage 40 GB available 40 GB available

Minimum requirements establish a baseline for compatibility; they do not specify a frame rate or guarantee smooth play. The recommended GPU is substantially faster than the minimum GPU, which is one reason a system that technically qualifies may still need 720p and a 30 FPS target.

Why an “i5” or “Intel graphics” label is not enough

“Intel Core i5” covers many generations and performance levels. Record the exact CPU model, not just the brand name. Also identify the graphics processor: an older discrete GPU, a modern integrated GPU, and a laptop GPU with a similar-sounding name can perform very differently.

Integrated graphics borrow system RAM rather than having dedicated VRAM. Two otherwise similar laptops can therefore perform differently depending on memory speed and whether RAM runs in single- or dual-channel mode. Eight gigabytes meets the listed minimum, but Windows and background applications have less room when the game is running. A larger page file is not a replacement for adequate physical memory.

Before changing settings, note your CPU model, GPU model, RAM amount and channel configuration, native display resolution, storage drive, Windows version, and graphics-driver version. On a laptop, also note whether you are plugged in and whether the game is using the discrete GPU.

Choose a realistic FPS target

Use the worst-performing area you regularly visit when choosing a cap, not only the opening sequence.

  • 30 FPS locked: The sensible fallback for hardware below the recommended specification or for demanding hubs and missions.
  • 40–45 FPS: A useful middle target for a modest gaming laptop if frame pacing remains stable.
  • 60 FPS: A reasonable goal for hardware comfortably above minimum, but not a universal promise in every location.
  • Uncapped: Not automatically better. It can increase heat, fan noise, power use, and frame-time fluctuation.

A steady 30 FPS generally feels better than performance that repeatedly swings between 25 and 45 FPS. An FPS cap also reduces unnecessary workload, but the best cap depends on your monitor and the lowest frame rate your system can sustain.

Step 1: Find out what is limiting performance

Average FPS alone is not enough. Use Task Manager, an existing monitoring overlay, or another trusted monitoring method to observe GPU usage, CPU usage, VRAM, system RAM, temperatures, clock speeds, and frame time while playing.

  • GPU near full usage: Lower resolution first, then anti-aliasing, effects, and shadows.
  • GPU usage unexpectedly low: Check for the wrong GPU, a CPU bottleneck, a power limit, thermal throttling, background interference, or a frame cap.
  • CPU or one CPU core heavily loaded: Lowering resolution may help little. Test single-player, close background programs, and use a realistic FPS cap.
  • VRAM or RAM pressure: Lower textures if necessary, close background applications, and check for hitching during area transitions.
  • Clocks fall after several minutes: Investigate heat, charger status, cooling, and the laptop’s performance profile.

Do not diagnose a system from one busy scene. Compare an ordinary area with the place where the problem is most severe.

Step 2: Make a laptop use the correct GPU

Windows menu names can change between releases, but the current graphics-preference route is generally:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System → Display → Graphics.
  3. Add the game executable if it is not already listed.
  4. Select it, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
  5. Restart the game.

In Steam, open the installation folder through Library → right-click the game → Manage → Browse local files. Select the executable actually present in that folder rather than relying on a filename copied from another installation. Community troubleshooting commonly refers to the DirectX 11 build, but the exact executable name and path can differ by installation.

While testing a laptop:

  • Connect the AC adapter.
  • Use a performance-oriented Windows power mode and disable battery saver.
  • Choose the manufacturer’s performance profile if one exists.
  • Keep vents unobstructed and use a hard surface.
  • Test again after the laptop has cooled.
  • Confirm GPU utilization during gameplay.

A high-performance Windows setting cannot overcome a laptop’s thermal, wattage, or cooling limits. If clock speeds drop under sustained load, the limitation may be physical rather than a missing software toggle.

Step 3: Apply the low-end graphics preset

Setting Starting value Reason and trade-off
Resolution 1280×720 Usually the largest reduction in rendering load for a GPU-limited system; the image will be softer.
Anti-aliasing Lowest acceptable Can reduce GPU load, at the cost of jagged edges and shimmer.
Textures Medium, then Low if needed Preserves image quality where possible; lower them mainly for VRAM pressure or texture-related hitching.
Effects and shadows Low Reduces scene-rendering cost, though the exact menu labels vary by build.
Motion Blur Off Improves clarity. The official documentation confirms the option but does not promise a specific FPS gain.
VSync Off while testing Makes troubleshooting easier; enable or test a cap later if tearing is unacceptable.
FPS cap 30 or the highest stable target Can improve frame-time consistency, heat, and noise.

Keep textures higher than other settings when VRAM allows. Lowering textures does not necessarily solve ordinary GPU load, whereas resolution changes the number of pixels rendered every frame. If the game remains GPU-limited after 720p, reduce anti-aliasing, effects, and shadows one at a time.

Do not assume the game provides DLSS, FSR, XeSS, frame generation, or a built-in resolution scale. Use only options visibly available in your installed build; do not add unsupported launch commands.

Fullscreen, Borderless, refresh rate, and VSync

Start with Fullscreen, then test Borderless if the presentation or performance is worse. Fullscreen may reduce desktop-compositor overhead on some systems, while Borderless may behave better with Alt-Tab, multi-monitor setups, or problematic fullscreen refresh rates. PCGamingWiki documents reports that switching modes can help certain area-specific stutters, but neither mode is a universal fix (PCGamingWiki).

  1. Change the window mode.
  2. Restart the game.
  3. Check the monitor’s Windows refresh rate and the game’s refresh-rate behavior.
  4. Test VSync on and off according to whether you need tear-free output or lower latency.
  5. Check for a driver-level frame limit if the game appears capped.

PCGamingWiki also records reports that fullscreen refresh-rate behavior can reset after Alt-Tab or closing the game. If that happens repeatedly, back up the configuration file before changing only the relevant refresh-rate field. Some workarounds may need to be repeated after launch.

Low average FPS versus stutter

When average FPS is low everywhere

Prioritize resolution, GPU selection, laptop power and cooling, then effects, shadows, and anti-aliasing. Check GPU usage and clocks while testing. If the GPU is saturated, reducing CPU-focused tweaks will not solve the problem.

When average FPS looks acceptable but the game hitches

Possible contributors include area transitions, fullscreen or refresh-rate behavior, background overlays, driver or shader activity, storage spikes, CPU limits, and split-screen rendering. Try these in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Test Fullscreen and Borderless.
  2. Disable Steam Overlay and other overlays temporarily.
  3. Verify the game files.
  4. Confirm the display refresh rate, VSync state, and any frame limiter.
  5. Compare single-player with split-screen.
  6. Watch frame time, not only the average FPS.

Community reports describe major drops in particular locations, including Droid Factory and other dense areas. Treat those reports as examples of scene-specific behavior, not universal benchmarks. If only one hub or mission remains poor after sensible settings changes, the remaining issue may be a game or scene limitation rather than a setting you have missed.

Split-screen co-op can change the result

The Steam version supports shared and split-screen co-op. Test single-player first under the same settings. If it is smooth alone but not with a second player, the additional rendering and simulation workload may be the limiting factor.

Lower resolution first, then effects and shadows. Use a stable 30 FPS target if needed. Community reports describe substantial split-screen performance degradation on some PCs, but that does not establish a universal percentage or prove that every co-op problem can be fixed through graphics settings (community report).

Safe maintenance and interference checks

  1. Update the GPU driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  2. Install pending Windows updates.
  3. Close browsers, recording software, RGB utilities, overlays, and other GPU-heavy applications.
  4. Temporarily test with Steam Overlay disabled if overlay-related hitching is suspected.
  5. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, find the installed-files section, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
  6. Restart Windows after a driver installation or major update.

These steps are reversible and useful for ruling out common interference. They are not substitutes for a faster GPU, more capable CPU, or adequate cooling. “RAM cleaners,” registry cleaners, random launch options, blanket service-disabling guides, and generic FPS-booster software are not established fixes for this game.

Repairing or resetting PCCONFIG.TXT

The game uses a user configuration file commonly identified as PCCONFIG.TXT. PCGamingWiki and community discussions place it under the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment folder. The usual location is:

%APPDATA%Warner Bros. Interactive EntertainmentLEGO Star Wars - The Skywalker SagaPCCONFIG.TXT

Installations and account configurations can differ, so do not assume the path exists exactly as written.

  1. Close the game completely.
  2. Paste %APPDATA% into File Explorer.
  3. Search for PCCONFIG.TXT if the expected folder is absent.
  4. Make a backup copy before editing.
  5. Change only one verified field at a time.
  6. Start the game and test.

Use the file only to correct a setting you can identify in your installed configuration. Do not paste a complete file from another user or add guessed keys and values. Manual editing is a community workaround, not an officially guaranteed support method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If settings do not save

Exit through the game’s menus before closing it. Check the file’s Properties and remove the Read-only attribute if it is set. Do not make the file read-only as a first step: that can preserve a workaround while preventing normal settings changes.

If necessary, back up and then rename or delete PCCONFIG.TXT so the game can regenerate default settings. This can also help when a crash or invalid display setting prevents normal launch.

If you get a black screen, stretched image, or unusable resolution

  • Try Alt-Tab, then restart the game.
  • Restore the backup configuration.
  • Use Borderless mode if Fullscreen is unusable.
  • Avoid unsupported refresh rates and custom resolutions.
  • If the file is corrupted, move it out of the folder and let the game recreate it.

When further tweaking will not solve the problem

More settings changes cannot compensate indefinitely for hardware below the game’s practical needs. Expect compromises if you are below the listed minimum, using weak integrated graphics, running single-channel memory, or playing on a laptop constrained by heat or power.

A sensible stopping point is 720p with a stable 30 FPS target, reduced effects, and the correct GPU selected. If ordinary areas are acceptable but a particular hub, mission, or split-screen session remains poor, that may be a scene-specific or engine limitation. If the game remains consistently below your acceptable target even at 720p and with correct power and GPU settings, a stronger PC is the meaningful solution.

Before buying the PC version, compare your exact CPU and GPU—not merely an “i5” label—with the official Steam requirements. Avoid buying generic FPS boosters, registry cleaners, or DLC as supposed performance fixes. Additional content does not replace adequate hardware.
