Lenovo Legion Go 2 confirmed—but when will the Windows and SteamOS models launch?

The Lenovo Legion Go 2 is already available in its Windows 11 form, while the officially confirmed SteamOS model still has no verified U.S. launch date as of August 10, 2026.

Lenovo Legion Go 2 is a real product, but the answer depends on which model you mean. The Windows 11 Legion Go (8.8”, 2) launched in 2025 and is the version buyers can purchase now, subject to regional stock. The separate Legion Go, Powered by SteamOS (8.8”, 2) was officially announced in January 2026 with an expected availability window beginning in June 2026.

However, Lenovo did not announce a specific SteamOS launch day. As of August 10, 2026, Lenovo’s U.S. Legion page still lists the SteamOS Gen 2 model as “Coming Soon”, while the Windows model has a “Shop Now” link. The most accurate answer is therefore: the Windows Legion Go 2 is already out; the SteamOS Legion Go 2 is confirmed but has no publicly verified U.S. release date.

Legion Go 2 launch status at a glance

Model Operating system Announcement Availability status Known price information
Legion Go (8.8”, 2) / Legion Go Gen 2 Windows 11 Final product announced September 5, 2025 Launched in 2025; Lenovo’s U.S. page lists it with “Shop Now,” although stock and regional SKUs vary From €999 in Lenovo’s European announcement; U.S. listings have shown about $1,099.99 and $1,349.99 depending on configuration
Legion Go, Powered by SteamOS (8.8”, 2) SteamOS Announced January 6, 2026, at CES Lenovo announced expected availability from June 2026, but no exact day was provided. The U.S. Legion page still says “Coming Soon” as of August 10, 2026 Estimated starting price of $1,199 in the United States; final configuration pricing was not fully published

Lenovo’s own announcements are the key distinction here: the Windows version received a finalized 2025 launch announcement, while the SteamOS model received a later announcement with a month-long availability target rather than a firm street date. See Lenovo’s Windows Legion Go 2 announcement, CES 2026 SteamOS announcement and current U.S. Legion product page.

Why there are two different Legion Go 2 launch stories

The name “Legion Go 2” is commonly used for two closely related products. They share the same basic 8.8-inch Legion Go 2 hardware platform, but they are sold with different operating systems and offer different software experiences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The confusion began in January 2025, when Lenovo showed the next Legion Go as a prototype at CES. That prototype included features such as an OLED display, a larger battery, up to 32GB of memory and an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme option. A prototype announcement did not establish final specifications, a final price or a release date. Lenovo later formally announced the production Windows model in September 2025, then announced the SteamOS configuration at CES 2026.

The important dates

  1. January 7, 2025: Lenovo showed the Legion Go (8.8”, 2) as a CES prototype. The hardware and launch plans were not yet final.
  2. September 5, 2025: Lenovo formally announced the Windows 11 Legion Go (8.8”, 2) at Innovation World in Berlin and said availability would begin from September 2025 in selected markets.
  3. October 2, 2025: Retail-unit reviews appeared, confirming that the Windows model was in reviewers’ hands and was no longer an unreleased product.
  4. January 6, 2026: Lenovo announced the Legion Go, Powered by SteamOS (8.8”, 2) at CES 2026.
  5. June 2026: Lenovo’s stated target for SteamOS availability. The company said “expected availability from June 2026,” not that the product would launch on a particular June day.
  6. August 10, 2026: Lenovo’s U.S. Legion page still showed the SteamOS Gen 2 model as “Coming Soon.” No replacement day or firm later date was publicly identified in the available official material.

The original prototype announcement is documented in Lenovo’s CES 2025 Legion announcement.

When did the Windows Legion Go 2 launch?

The Windows version launched in 2025, although the exact timing depended on the market.

Lenovo’s September 2025 global announcement gave September 2025 as the starting availability period and cited an expected starting price of €999. U.S. preorder and retail coverage placed the American release in October 2025, with October 31 commonly used as the U.S. street date. That should not be treated as a universal worldwide release date: Lenovo’s products can arrive at different times and with different configurations in different countries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the United States, Lenovo’s product listings have shown a starting price of approximately $1,099.99 for a Ryzen Z2 configuration, while a higher-end Ryzen Z2 Extreme configuration has been listed at approximately $1,349.99. These figures identify particular U.S. configurations; they are not a universal price for every Legion Go 2 model, and retailer discounts or stock can change the amount.

The Windows launch was also not entirely smooth. Lenovo acknowledged that demand exceeded its projections, leading to extended delivery times, while some preorders were canceled or delayed. That history is a useful reminder that “announced,” “available to preorder,” “shipping” and “in stock” are separate milestones. GameSpot’s preorder coverage, Windows Central’s launch coverage and Tom’s Hardware’s reporting on delivery problems provide the relevant U.S. context.

When will the SteamOS Legion Go 2 launch?

There is still no confirmed U.S. launch day.

Lenovo announced the SteamOS version on January 6, 2026, with an estimated starting price of $1,199 and “expected availability from June 2026.” The wording matters. “From June 2026” describes an expected availability window; it does not mean June 1, June 15 or June 30 was confirmed.

Since June has passed, Lenovo’s U.S. storefront is the most important current check. As of August 10, 2026, the U.S. Legion landing page lists the Windows Legion Go Gen 2 separately with a “Shop Now” option but labels the SteamOS Gen 2 model “Coming Soon.” Lenovo has not publicly supplied a firm replacement date in the official sources covered here.

That means the SteamOS model should be described as confirmed but not publicly verified as on sale in the United States. It may have different availability in another country, but the evidence provided does not establish a worldwide retail launch. Nor does it establish that the product has been canceled. The June target may have been delayed, missed or otherwise left unverified; only a new Lenovo announcement or a country-specific official product listing can settle that.

What hardware does the Legion Go 2 have?

The Windows and SteamOS versions are built around the same core Legion Go 2 platform, although Lenovo has not promised that every regional configuration or component will be identical. The following are Lenovo’s published headline specifications for the platform and SteamOS model.

Component Legion Go 2 platform specification
Display 8.8-inch OLED panel, 1920×1200 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, up to 144Hz refresh rate and up to 500 nits stated brightness
Processor Up to AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme; Windows configurations also include a Ryzen Z2 option
Graphics Up to AMD Radeon 890M on the Windows model
Memory Up to 32GB of 8000MHz LPDDR5X
Internal storage Up to 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD
Expandable storage Up to 2TB of additional microSD storage, subject to card capacity and performance
Battery 74Wh
Charger 65W USB-C adapter
Ports Two USB-C ports, 3.5mm audio and microSD
Wireless Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3
Controls Detachable TrueStrike controllers, Hall-effect joysticks, a trackpad, FPS mode and a kickstand
Weight Approximately 920g with the controllers attached

The combination of a large OLED screen, detachable controls and a 74Wh battery is what separates the Legion Go 2 from smaller handheld PCs. It is also a relatively heavy handheld at roughly 920g with controllers attached, so buyers prioritizing portability should compare its size and weight with fixed-controller alternatives.

Windows versus SteamOS: what actually changes?

The SteamOS model is not simply a Windows unit with a different boot logo. The core hardware is closely related, but the factory-installed operating system changes how the handheld is used and which software is most convenient.

Windows 11 Legion Go 2 SteamOS Legion Go 2
Uses Windows 11 and Lenovo’s Legion Space software Uses SteamOS and a console-style Steam interface
Broad access to Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net and other Windows software Designed around the Steam ecosystem, including Steam Library, Steam Cloud, Steam Chat, Game Recording and quick suspend/resume
Better fit for Windows-only utilities, launchers and games Potentially simpler for players whose libraries are mainly on Steam
Legion Space provides Lenovo’s device-management and control features Lenovo says Legion Space is unavailable on SteamOS models
Fingerprint-reader functionality is available where included and supported by the Windows configuration Lenovo says fingerprint-reader functionality is disabled on SteamOS models

SteamOS can provide a more console-like experience, with a handheld-oriented interface and quick suspend/resume. That does not mean every PC game will work perfectly. Compatibility can vary with Proton support, launchers, middleware and anti-cheat systems. Some Windows-specific games and utilities may be unavailable or require workarounds. If access to Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic, GOG, Battle.net or Windows-only software is important, Windows remains the more flexible option.

Conversely, if the device will be used mainly for Steam games and the priority is a cleaner, controller-first interface, the official SteamOS edition may be worth waiting for. Lenovo’s CES announcement is available here, while Engadget’s coverage explains the practical Windows-versus-SteamOS distinction.

Can you buy the Windows model and install SteamOS?

Installing a community-supported Linux distribution or a SteamOS build on a Windows Legion Go 2 can be an alternative for technically confident owners, but it is not the same as buying Lenovo’s official factory-configured SteamOS model.

  • Lenovo PureSight Gaming Display: The 8" Lenovo PureSight Display offers a larger, ultra-vibrant screen space for immersive gaming. A 120Hz refresh rate and VRR ensure smooth, responsive play. • Take Full Control: Legion TrueStrike Controllers deliver all-day comfort and precision with an anti-slip texture for total control. Adjustable triggers switch effortlessly between short and long presses. Hall effect joysticks and triggers ensure smooth, accurate movements. A touchpad, Pivot D-Pad, RGB joysticks, and Legion O power button add style and functionality.
  • Designed for Comfort, Built to Last: The Lenovo Legion Go S features a lightweight 1.6 lb (730g) ergonomic unibody for fatigue-free gaming. Its Nebula polymer finish resists dirt and oil, while an anti-slip texture ensures a secure grip. With dual USB Type-C ports and a combo audio jack, it seamlessly connects to your accessories. Built to last with Windows 11 Home.
  • With 128GB MicroSD card, Mytrix 5-in-1 hub, microfiber cleaning cloth, and 9H tempered glass screen protector.

A self-installed operating system can involve different levels of support for firmware, controller features, brightness controls, gyro functions, RGB lighting and suspend/resume behavior. It may also require reinstalling Windows if the owner changes their mind, depending on how the device is configured. An unofficial installation therefore does not prove that the official SteamOS SKU has launched.

Buy the Windows model and install another operating system only if you are comfortable troubleshooting those differences. If official Lenovo support, a factory-installed SteamOS environment and the advertised handheld experience matter, verify that the retailer is selling the exact SteamOS configuration—or wait for Lenovo to make it orderable.

Do not confuse Legion Go 2 with Legion Go S

Lenovo’s product names make this easy to get wrong.

  • Legion Go 2: the larger flagship handheld with an 8.8-inch OLED display, detachable controllers, a kickstand and Ryzen Z2/Z2 Extreme options.
  • Legion Go S: a smaller 8-inch handheld with integrated, non-detachable controls. It has separate Windows and SteamOS configurations.

Lenovo announced an officially licensed SteamOS version of the Legion Go S at CES 2025. That announcement did not mean the larger 8.8-inch Legion Go 2 SteamOS model was already available. When checking a listing, look for the exact product name and confirm both the screen size and operating system.

Should you buy the Windows Legion Go 2 or wait?

Buy the Windows model now if:

  • You need a handheld PC immediately rather than waiting for an unconfirmed SteamOS date.
  • Your library includes Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net or other non-Steam launchers.
  • You need the broadest compatibility with Windows games, anti-cheat systems and PC utilities.
  • You want Lenovo Legion Space for power modes, controls and device management.
  • You prefer the exact Ryzen Z2 or Ryzen Z2 Extreme configuration currently available in your market.
  • You find the model at a price that makes sense for its memory, storage and processor tier.

Wait for the official SteamOS model if:

  • Most of your gaming happens through Steam.
  • A console-style interface and quick suspend/resume are more important than maximum Windows flexibility.
  • You want a factory-installed and officially marketed SteamOS configuration.
  • You do not want to reinstall Windows or troubleshoot a community operating-system installation.
  • You can tolerate waiting without an exact public launch date.

The practical buying advice is straightforward: if you need the Legion Go 2 hardware now, the Windows model is the only clearly available route supported by the current U.S. storefront evidence. If SteamOS is the main reason you want the device, avoid treating a Windows listing, a product page containing SteamOS specifications or a user-installed Linux setup as proof that the official SteamOS edition is on sale.

What Lenovo still has not confirmed

As of August 10, 2026, the available announcements and U.S. product pages do not establish:

  • A specific U.S. SteamOS launch day.
  • A firm replacement date after the June 2026 availability target.
  • A complete U.S. SteamOS configuration and price list.
  • Whether every memory, storage and processor configuration will launch at the same time.
  • Whether the SteamOS model has launched in every region outside the United States.
  • Whether the June target was formally delayed, rather than simply remaining unverified on Lenovo’s public pages.

Lenovo’s SteamOS product page may contain specifications and imagery before orders open. That marketing material is useful evidence that the product is official, but the stronger availability signal is whether Lenovo offers an order or “Shop Now” option for the specific model. Regional pages may also differ, so a U.S. status should not be presented as a worldwide status.

What does “available” mean here?

Several milestones are often collapsed into the single word “launch,” but they are not interchangeable:

  • Announcement: Lenovo publicly confirms that it plans to sell the product.
  • Prototype reveal: Lenovo shows hardware that may still change before production.
  • Preorder: A retailer or Lenovo accepts orders, sometimes before stock is ready to ship.
  • Street date: Retailers are expected to begin selling or delivering the product.
  • Direct-sale availability: Lenovo’s own store accepts an order for a specific regional SKU.
  • Review-unit availability: Reviewers receive hardware, which does not guarantee broad retail stock.
  • Factory-installed SteamOS availability: The buyer receives the official SteamOS configuration, rather than installing an operating system on a Windows unit.

The Windows Legion Go 2 passed several of these milestones in 2025, although some deliveries were delayed. The SteamOS model has passed the official-announcement milestone, but its U.S. retail status remains unresolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Lenovo Legion Go 2 confirmed or still a rumor?

It is confirmed. Lenovo formally announced the Windows 11 Legion Go (8.8”, 2) in September 2025 and announced the SteamOS version in January 2026. Confirmation does not mean that both versions launched at the same time.

Was the SteamOS Legion Go 2 supposed to launch in June 2026?

Yes. Lenovo announced “expected availability from June 2026,” but did not give a specific day. As of August 10, 2026, Lenovo’s U.S. Legion page still says “Coming Soon,” so June should be treated as an unverified target rather than a completed U.S. launch.

How much does the Legion Go 2 cost?

Prices depend on the operating system, country and configuration. Lenovo announced the Windows model from €999 in Europe, while U.S. listings have shown roughly $1,099.99 for a Ryzen Z2 configuration and about $1,349.99 for a Ryzen Z2 Extreme configuration. Lenovo estimated a $1,199 U.S. starting price for the SteamOS version, but that is not the price of every configuration.

Is the SteamOS Legion Go 2 the same hardware as the Windows model?

It uses the same core Legion Go 2 hardware platform and Lenovo lists the same headline features, including the 8.8-inch OLED display, 74Wh battery, detachable controllers and up to Ryzen Z2 Extreme. However, Lenovo has not promised that every regional SKU or component will be identical, so buyers should verify the exact listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install SteamOS on a Windows Legion Go 2?

You can explore community-supported Linux or SteamOS installations, but that is not equivalent to buying Lenovo’s official SteamOS edition. Support for firmware, controls, brightness, gyro, RGB and suspend/resume may differ, and Lenovo’s official software support may not cover the same setup.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Lenovo Legion Go 2 is already a released handheld if you mean the Windows 11 model, which launched in 2025 and is listed for purchase in the United States. The SteamOS model is also official, but Lenovo’s “expected availability from June 2026” was a window—not a firm day—and the U.S. site still showed it as “Coming Soon” on August 10, 2026. Buy the Windows version for immediate access and broad PC compatibility; wait for the official SteamOS model if its console-style experience is the priority and you can accept an uncertain release date.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
