Performance: the Go S has more headroom, but there is no fixed performance ratio
The Legion Go S has the newer and more powerful hardware platform, particularly in higher-end Z1 Extreme configurations. It can run games at higher power levels and has more performance headroom than the Steam Deck OLED’s original APU.
The Deck OLED uses the same basic compute platform as the original Deck: a 6nm AMD APU with four Zen 2 CPU cores and eight RDNA 2 GPU compute units in a 4–15W power envelope. The OLED model improves the display, battery, wireless hardware, and efficiency-related experience, but it is not a major compute upgrade. Valve lists the full design in its technical specifications.
That does not mean every Go S is automatically faster in every game. Results depend on:
- Exact processor and memory configuration
- Operating system and driver support
- Configured TDP
- Internal resolution and upscaling
- Graphics settings and frame-rate cap
- Game engine, patches, and shader compilation
The Go S’s 1920×1200 native resolution also requires more rendering work than the Deck’s 1280×800 display. In demanding games, running the Go S at 1280×800 or another lower internal resolution may produce a better experience than using its full native resolution.
One Engadget review reported approximately 29 frames per second for the SteamOS Go S versus 24fps for the Steam Deck OLED in its tested scenario. Treat that as one review result, not a universal performance multiplier; the game, settings, resolution, TDP, and power state matter.
Display: larger and faster versus darker, higher-contrast OLED
Why the Legion Go S display is appealing
- Larger 8-inch viewing area
- 1920×1200 resolution
- Up to 120Hz refresh rate
- VRR on applicable configurations
- More desktop space in Windows
- Better fit for games that can sustain higher frame rates
The larger panel and high refresh rate make the Go S feel more spacious and responsive when the hardware can feed it enough frames. VRR can also reduce visible tearing and unevenness within its supported range.

Why the Steam Deck OLED display remains excellent
- 7.4-inch HDR OLED panel
- 1280×800 resolution
- Up to 90Hz
- True blacks and very high contrast
- HDR support with up to 1000-nit peak brightness according to Valve’s specification
The Deck OLED has more dramatic contrast in dark games and HDR-supported content. The Go S is larger and faster, but “higher resolution” does not automatically mean better image quality: its native resolution can cost performance and battery life.
Display winner: choose the Go S for size, refresh rate, and VRR; choose the Deck OLED for contrast, HDR impact, and a more cinematic picture.
Battery life: capacity alone does not decide the winner
The cited Go S configuration has a 55.5Wh battery, compared with 50Wh in the Steam Deck OLED. The larger Go S battery does not guarantee longer runtime because its faster hardware, larger display, higher resolution, and higher possible TDP can consume more power.
Valve estimates roughly three to 12 hours of gameplay for the Deck OLED depending on the workload. Lenovo notes that Go S runtime varies with configuration, brightness, wireless use, power settings, software, and workload. These vendor ranges are not directly comparable measurements.
In practical terms:
- AAA games at high power: both can drain quickly; the Go S may trade its performance advantage for shorter runtime.
- Indie and 2D games: the Deck OLED can be very efficient at modest power levels, while the Go S may also last well when tuned carefully.
- Emulation: results depend heavily on the system being emulated and the chosen power profile.
- Game streaming and Remote Play: local GPU performance matters less, making screen preference and network quality more important.
- Video playback: display brightness, codec support, and software settings affect runtime.
- Sleep and resume: SteamOS generally provides the more console-like suspend experience.
For travel, judge battery life by the games you actually play rather than watt-hours. A USB-C PD power bank can extend either device, but check that it can sustain the handheld’s charging requirements while gaming.
Software: SteamOS convenience versus Windows reach
Steam Deck OLED and SteamOS
The Deck OLED is the more integrated handheld. Its library interface, Steam Input, per-game controls, performance settings, shader-cache handling, Deck Verified labels, and suspend/resume workflow are designed as one system. Valve describes the Deck as a SteamOS-based handheld with fast suspend and resume; see the product information and technical specifications.
That convenience has limits. Some games are unsupported or need configuration changes because of Linux compatibility, anti-cheat systems, launchers, codecs, or other middleware. Non-Steam stores and Xbox PC Game Pass are less straightforward and may require desktop-mode workarounds or streaming.

Legion Go S with SteamOS
A SteamOS Go S offers a much more console-like experience than a Windows handheld while retaining more powerful hardware than the Deck OLED. It is a strong option for buyers whose library is primarily on Steam and who want the Go S screen and performance potential.
However, it is third-party hardware. Firmware, controller behavior, sleep states, drivers, and vendor-specific features may not be as seamless or mature as on Valve’s own hardware. Lenovo also notes that some Legion Space functions, including RGB-stick adjustment, are available only on Windows models; do not assume every Windows utility exists in the SteamOS configuration. See Lenovo’s SteamOS product page.

Legion Go S with Windows 11
Windows is the practical choice when your games or services require Windows-native support. It provides direct access to:
- Xbox PC Game Pass
- Epic Games Store
- GOG
- Battle.net
- Ubisoft Connect
- Windows productivity software
- Mods, utilities, and peripherals designed for Windows
It also broadens compatibility for multiplayer games whose anti-cheat support is Windows-specific. The trade-off is usability: desktop controls are awkward on a small touchscreen, launchers and updates interrupt the handheld flow, background processes can affect consistency, and sleep/resume is generally less console-like than SteamOS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSoftware winner: Steam Deck OLED for effortless Steam handheld use; Windows Go S for reach and compatibility; SteamOS Go S for buyers who want the middle ground.
Controls and ergonomics: the Deck’s trackpads change the comparison
The Steam Deck OLED has two 32.5mm haptic trackpads, gyro aiming, capacitive thumbsticks, and four assignable rear grip buttons. The trackpads are particularly valuable for strategy games, first-person shooters, simulation titles, cursor-heavy RPGs, desktop navigation, and games with poor controller support.
The Go S uses a more conventional gamepad layout with Hall-effect sticks and rear buttons. Hall-effect technology can reduce reliance on traditional contact-based sensing, but it is not a guarantee that sticks can never develop problems. The Go S has no equivalent pair of integrated trackpads.
That omission is more important than a specification table suggests. If you regularly play mouse-oriented PC games without an external mouse, the Deck may be more comfortable and flexible even when the Go S runs the game faster.

Neither handheld runs every PC game perfectly. Sort your library into these groups before buying:
- Steam Deck Verified games
- Steam games that work after graphics or control changes
- Windows-only multiplayer games
- Xbox PC Game Pass titles
- Epic, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, and Battle.net games
- Emulation
- Modded games and mod managers
- Cloud gaming and Remote Play
- Games with separate launchers or invasive anti-cheat
Deck Verified is useful guidance, not a guarantee of a flawless experience. Windows offers broader native PC compatibility, but it does not eliminate launcher problems, driver issues, anti-cheat restrictions, or poor performance. Anti-cheat support also changes, so check the current status of your specific multiplayer games.

Storage, expansion, and ownership
Both devices support internal NVMe storage and microSD expansion. A 512GB SSD can fill quickly with modern AAA games, while a 1TB model reduces management and reinstalling. A quality gaming-oriented UHS-I microSD card is a convenient expansion option, although loading times and updates may differ from internal storage.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that every Go S has the same SSD or memory configuration. Confirm the exact model before buying a card or replacement drive. Likewise, do not assume Deck and Go S replacement SSDs are interchangeable; verify the form factor and service instructions for the particular device.
Valve publishes detailed hardware and repair information and has designed the Steam Deck with serviceability in mind. Lenovo’s warranty and support terms depend on region and configuration; one U.S. Go S listing specifies one year of Legion Ultimate Support. Check the warranty shown for the exact product and purchaser location. Installing another operating system may also affect what support Lenovo provides for software-related problems.
Docking and desktop use
Both handhelds can connect to external displays and peripherals through USB-C. Valve lists DisplayPort support up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz for the Steam Deck OLED. The Deck’s trackpads also make desktop navigation easier when a mouse is not connected.
For the Go S, verify USB-C capabilities on the exact model in Lenovo’s PSREF documentation, since variants may differ. A suitable dock should have the ports you actually need: USB-C Power Delivery, HDMI or DisplayPort, USB ports, and Ethernet if required. A dock is optional for handheld play.
The Windows Go S is the more natural small desktop replacement because Windows applications, drivers, and peripherals work natively. The Deck can also serve as a desktop, but SteamOS desktop mode is better suited to users comfortable with Linux and occasional troubleshooting.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Steam Deck OLED if you:
- Mostly play Steam games.
- Want the simplest console-like experience.
- Value OLED contrast and HDR.
- Play strategy, shooters, simulation, or cursor-heavy games that benefit from trackpads.
- Want dependable suspend and resume.
- Prefer the most established SteamOS integration.
- Find it cheaper than an equivalent Go S after checking current prices.
Buy the Legion Go S with SteamOS if you:
- Want SteamOS but more performance headroom than the Deck OLED.
- Prefer a larger 8-inch display and 120Hz refresh.
- Value VRR on a supported configuration.
- Play primarily Steam-compatible games.
- Are comfortable tuning power, resolution, and graphics settings.
- Find the exact SteamOS model at a competitive price.
Buy the Legion Go S with Windows if you:
- Use Xbox PC Game Pass.
- Need Epic, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, or other Windows launchers.
- Play multiplayer games with Windows-specific anti-cheat requirements.
- Want a handheld that can also function as a compact Windows PC.
- Accept more setup, updates, and manual maintenance.
Neither is ideal if you:
- Expect demanding new AAA games to run at high settings and high frame rates.
- Need all-day battery life without charging.
- Primarily want a console-exclusive library.
- Dislike adjusting resolution and graphics settings.
- Need a laptop replacement with a built-in keyboard.
- Want a very light device for extended one-handed use.
Final verdict
The Steam Deck OLED is the best overall choice for most buyers because its OLED screen, controls, SteamOS integration, and suspend/resume experience work together better than the raw specification sheet suggests.
The Lenovo Legion Go S is the better hardware platform when performance, a larger high-refresh display, VRR, or higher-power gaming matters more than battery efficiency and simplicity. Choose the Windows model for Game Pass, launchers, mods, and Windows-specific multiplayer. Choose the SteamOS model if you want a cleaner handheld interface but primarily play Steam-compatible games.
The price can reverse the value verdict, so compare equivalent storage and exact configurations on the same day. Most importantly, do not compare a Windows Z2 or 16GB Go S with a 32GB SteamOS Z1 Extreme model—or any other mismatched pair—as though “Legion Go S” were a single product.
