Levelhead is both a demanding platformer and a level-making game: you can tackle its campaign, play stages made by other players, or build and share your own. The best fit depends on which side appeals to you. Switch critics praised its creative range but flagged a tough campaign and editor friction; the available review sample is small and dates to 2020.
What critics think of Levelhead
Metacritic lists three critic reviews for the Nintendo Switch version: GamingTrend scored it 90/100 on April 30, 2020; Nintendo Life scored it 90/100 on May 8, 2020; and NintendoWorldReport scored it 70/100 on April 30, 2020. That is a small, platform-specific sample, not a current consensus across every version. Metacritic’s Switch critic-review listing records those scores.
The positive reviews highlight how the game joins platforming with making and curating levels. Nintendo Life’s Stuart Gipp described its design as strong across “challenge, creation and curation.” GamingTrend praised the creator community, while also warning that the solo campaign is aggressively difficult and that finding or sharing levels can be awkward. NintendoWorldReport likewise saw substantial appeal in the community stages, but said creating on Switch could be frustrating compared with PC. Nintendo Life’s Switch review and the reviews listed by Metacritic offer the detail behind those assessments.
What kind of game is it?
Levelhead is a 2D platformer developed and published by Butterscotch Shenanigans. Its campaign is only one part of the package: the game also includes a level editor and a supply of user-created stages. Steam describes it as a co-op party platformer with campaign, editing, and user-generated levels. Steam’s Levelhead page outlines those features.

- 50 Classic Games including: 1942, Super Street Fighter II, Tetris, Mega Man I & II, Galaga, Dig Dug, Burger Time
- HDMI Video Output (720p)
- Comes with two Wired Game Controllers
- SD Card Slot for Downloadable Games
- Save/Load/Rewind all Games
That mix makes the purchase question less about whether you want “more levels” and more about what you want to do with them. If you mainly want to play, the campaign and community stages are the draw. If you want to create, editor controls and the ease of publishing or finding content matter just as much as the platforming.
Is the campaign too difficult?
Challenge is a notable part of the appeal, but it may also be the biggest barrier. GamingTrend characterized the single-player campaign as aggressively difficult. That does not mean every player will find it unfair, but players looking for a relaxed platformer should take the warning seriously. Those who enjoy demanding precision challenges may be more comfortable with the campaign’s reputation. The listed Switch reviews reflect both the praise and the difficulty caveat.

Is it better for playing levels or making them?
If you want to play
There is a campaign plus community-made content, and NintendoWorldReport noted the extensive selection of levels available to players primarily interested in playing. The trade-off is discovery: GamingTrend’s review points to shortcomings in finding and sharing stages, so a large library does not guarantee a frictionless route to the kind of level you want.
If you want to create
Critics praised the editor as a substantial part of the game, but the Switch experience deserves a platform-specific caveat. NintendoWorldReport reported frustrating creator issues on Switch compared with PC, and GamingTrend also noted problems around sharing or finding creations. The cited reviews do not establish that the same control limitation applies on PC, so do not assume that creating feels identical across platforms.

Does Levelhead support multiplayer?
Yes. Steam describes co-op play, and Nintendo Life’s Switch profile lists support for up to four players. That makes it a plausible fit for shared play as well as solo platforming, though the available evidence does not establish identical multiplayer details on every platform. Steam and Nintendo Life describe the relevant features.
Which platforms is it on?
Metacritic lists PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and iOS for the game, while Apple’s US App Store listing describes cross-platform play and cross-save. How should you read the player rating?
Steam showed 95% positive from 879 user reviews in a snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. That is a changing Steam user-review figure, not a critic score, and it should not be combined with the three 2020 Switch reviews as if they measure the same thing. Steam’s store page displays its user reviews.
Who should pick up Levelhead?
- Good fit: players who enjoy challenging platformers and want a campaign alongside community-made stages.
- Good fit: players who value a level editor and are interested in making or sharing their own stages.
- Potential mismatch: players seeking a gentle campaign, or those who expect finding and sharing community levels to be seamless.
- Choose platform carefully: Switch creator controls drew criticism in the reviewed release; the cited sources do not show that this issue applies equally to PC.
In short, the strongest case for Levelhead is its combination of a demanding platformer and a creator-driven library. If you want that combination, the Switch reviews suggest plenty to like, with editor usability and discovery as meaningful trade-offs. If you mainly want a smooth, easy campaign or plan to create extensively on Switch, those caveats deserve extra weight.
