LG UltraGear OLED 39GX950B is now available: 5K2K at 165Hz, 330Hz in a lower-resolution mode

LG’s UltraGear evo GX9 39GX950B-B is no longer merely “coming soon.” LG announced U.S. pre-orders on April 7, 2026, at a launch price of $1,799.99, and its U.S. product page showed an Add to Cart purchase flow with delivery and pickup information as of August 18, 2026. The 39-inch curved OLED’s headline feature is a 5,120 × 2,160 5K2K resolution at up to 165Hz. Its 330Hz mode is available only at a reduced resolution, while its monitor-based AI upscaling is more limited than the marketing headline suggests.

The 39GX950B and 39GX950B-B refer to the same monitor family; the “-B” suffix identifies the U.S. retail model. Regional pages can use different naming and reduced-resolution terminology, so specifications should be checked against the page for the buyer’s country.

Why 5K2K matters on a 39-inch ultrawide

5K2K means 5,120 × 2,160 pixels. Compared with a conventional 3,440 × 1,440 ultrawide, it provides substantially more horizontal and vertical detail while retaining the broad 21:9 workspace. The extra vertical pixels are particularly useful for documents, timelines, spreadsheets and game interfaces.

At roughly 143 pixels per inch, the 39GX950B should look considerably denser than a typical 34-inch 1440p OLED ultrawide. That can mean sharper text, more room for side-by-side applications and finer detail in simulation games, RPGs and racing titles. LG described it as the first 39-inch 5K2K OLED gaming monitor based on published gaming-monitor specifications as of March 2026; that is a dated, manufacturer-supplied industry claim rather than a permanent designation.

  • 27” OLED Brilliance with up to 240Hz of Game-Changing Speed - Experience ultra-smooth, tear-free gameplay with up to 240Hz refresh rate on a glossy, bright 27” QHD OLED display.

The trade-off is rendering cost. Native 5K2K pushes about 11 million pixels per frame, so a monitor capable of 165Hz does not guarantee that a PC can render modern games at 165 frames per second. GPU performance, ray tracing, game-engine optimization, upscaling and graphics settings will determine the actual result.

Tandem OLED and HDR brightness

The panel uses LG’s fourth-generation Primary RGB Tandem OLED technology. LG claims deep blacks, vivid color and improved brightness, with VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification and UL-verified display-quality and color certifications as presented in its announcement.

The brightness figures need context. LG lists a typical/full-screen figure of 335 nits and a peak of up to 1,500 nits under an internal HDR test at a 1.5% average picture level. The latter describes small highlights such as reflections or explosions; it is not sustained full-screen brightness. LG’s figures are manufacturer claims, not independent laboratory measurements.

OLED still brings the usual long-term consideration of image retention and burn-in when static desktop elements remain visible for extended periods. OLED Care features can reduce risk through maintenance and protection routines, but they do not guarantee that burn-in cannot occur. Buyers should check the warranty and burn-in coverage that apply in their region.

165Hz at 5K2K, or 330Hz at lower resolution

The monitor’s primary mode is 5K2K at 165Hz. Its headline 330Hz mode is a dual-mode option for reduced-resolution operation, not 5K2K at 330Hz. LG’s U.S. documentation associates the higher refresh rate with QHD-class or otherwise reduced-resolution output, while regional pages may label the mode differently.

That distinction matters. Competitive shooters, esports games and fast racing titles may benefit from the lower latency and smoother motion of 330Hz, provided the PC can produce the required frame rate. The mode is less attractive for cinematic single-player games, where native 5K2K resolution, HDR and image quality are more likely to matter.

A compatible graphics card, suitable DisplayPort 2.1 cable and correct display settings may be required to reach the maximum modes. DisplayPort 2.1 support on the monitor does not by itself guarantee 165Hz at native resolution.

AI upscaling is useful, but not universal

LG’s on-device 5K2K AI Upscaling analyzes incoming content and attempts to enhance it toward the panel’s native resolution. The monitor also includes AI Scene Optimization and AI Sound features. Because the processing happens in the monitor, it can offer an additional option when the source device cannot render at 5K2K.

It should not be treated as a replacement for native rendering or modern GPU-based upscaling. LG’s U.S. page says the feature requires at least a Wide Full HD input, and LG’s Canadian guidance recommends a 1080p 60Hz source for optimal AI-upscaling performance. Independent review coverage from PC Gamer found the feature inconsistent and reported that it did not work at 3,440 × 1,440, a common resolution for existing ultrawide owners.

Possible results therefore range from useful sharpening to soft or artificial-looking detail, depending on the source. The feature also does not reduce the underlying workload of rendering a demanding game, nor does it add frame generation. It is best regarded as an optional convenience rather than the main reason to buy this monitor.

Ports and compatibility

  • DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20: The most relevant connection for a high-end PC targeting native 5K2K at high refresh rates.
  • HDMI 2.1: Suitable for modern consoles and compatible PCs, although consoles will not use the monitor’s full 5K2K/165Hz capability.
  • USB-C: Provides video connectivity and up to 90W of power delivery for compatible laptops. The laptop must support video output over USB-C, and 90W may not meet the needs of every high-performance notebook under load.
  • USB hub: Independent coverage reports hub functionality for connected peripherals.

LG’s U.S. compatibility notes specify G-SYNC support for GeForce GTX 10-series and newer cards over DisplayPort, and GeForce RTX 30-series and newer cards over HDMI 2.1. AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support is also listed. Exact behavior can vary with the GPU, operating system, cable and connection type.

Price, pre-orders and availability

LG announced a U.S. launch price of $1,799.99 on April 7, 2026. The company’s original promotion offered qualifying pre-order customers a two-year LG Premium Care warranty extension for $1 when ordering between April 6 and May 3, 2026. That promotion had expired by August 18.

As of August 18, LG’s U.S. product page displayed an Add to Cart path along with delivery and pickup information. The launch price should not automatically be treated as the live price, however; LG can change pricing, stock and delivery estimates without notice. Check the product page before ordering, along with the return policy, warranty terms and any specific OLED burn-in coverage.

LG lists the monitor separately in Canada and the U.K., with regional availability, offers and terminology. U.S., Canadian, Japanese and U.K. prices should not be combined into a single starting-price claim.

Productivity strengths and OLED compromises

The combination of a 39-inch 21:9 canvas, roughly 143 PPI and USB-C charging makes the 39GX950B unusually versatile for users who want one display for gaming and work. The format suits video timelines, wide spreadsheets, multiple application windows and long game interfaces without the physical width of two separate monitors.

Pixel density alone does not determine text quality. OLED subpixel layouts can produce color fringing or softer-looking text around high-contrast edges, and PC Gamer criticized this panel’s lack of a conventional RGB-stripe structure compared with an upcoming Alienware display using a related LG Display panel. Anyone spending most of the day reading documents, coding or working in spreadsheets should inspect independent text-clarity testing before buying.

The 1500R curve is another preference issue. It can make a large screen feel more immersive and keep the edges within the viewer’s field of view, but it is less suitable for people who require perfectly straight geometric lines or simply dislike curved displays.

Who should buy the 39GX950B?

Buy it if you:

  • Want a very large 21:9 OLED with much higher density than a typical 34-inch 1440p ultrawide.
  • Have a powerful gaming PC and accept that native 5K2K at 165Hz will be demanding.
  • Play immersive RPGs, simulations, racing games and other titles that benefit from width and detail.
  • Need a single monitor for gaming and productivity, including USB-C laptop connectivity.
  • Are comfortable paying an enthusiast-level launch price and buying a currently available product.

Wait or choose a different class of monitor if you:

  • Primarily play esports games and want high refresh at a simpler, easier-to-drive resolution.
  • Prioritize the cleanest possible desktop text rendering.
  • Are particularly concerned about OLED burn-in, warranty duration or regional coverage.
  • Expect monitor-based AI upscaling to work with every common ultrawide input resolution.
  • Want to compare alternatives before committing nearly $1,800.

Competition and verdict

The most relevant reason to wait is upcoming competition. PC Gamer identified Alienware’s AW3926QW as a potentially important alternative because of its RGB-stripe subpixel structure, which may appeal to productivity-focused buyers. That does not establish that Alienware’s monitor is better; price, availability, image quality, brightness, input lag, OLED-care behavior and text rendering require direct independent comparison.

The 39GX950B is a genuine high-end display with an unusual proposition: a huge curved 5K2K OLED canvas, native 165Hz gaming, strong connectivity and a lower-resolution 330Hz option. It is compelling for enthusiasts who specifically want that combination and have the GPU to use it. At $1,799.99, however, it is not a value ultrawide, and its reduced-resolution high-refresh mode, imperfect AI-upscaling support, OLED text concerns and burn-in-related warranty questions are important parts of the purchase decision—not footnotes.
