lgnwnt32.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded. lgnwnt32.dll is a legacy Novell NetWare Login API module used by the Novell Client, not a normal Windows component.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the matching Novell Client or Client for Open Enterprise Server package. Do not download a loose copy of the DLL and place it in System32. The error may also be caused by a login script, server connection, DNS or SLP failure, password policy, an unsupported client, or antivirus quarantine.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what happened:
- The message appears as Windows starts or during network login: repair the installed Novell Client first.
- The message appeared while mapping a drive or running a login script: investigate the server name, DNS, SLP, path, permissions, and script before assuming the DLL is damaged.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: inspect Windows Security protection history before restoring anything.
- The computer was recently upgraded or patched: check whether the installed Novell Client generation supports this Windows installation.
- The error mentions password changes: the issue may be a NetWare or eDirectory password policy rather than a missing file.
- The client is present but several Windows components are malfunctioning: run DISM followed by SFC.
- You found the DLL on a download site: do not use it. Obtain the complete client installer from your organization or the vendor’s official entitlement portal.
What lgnwnt32.dll actually is
Historical Novell installation documentation lists LGNWNT32.DLL as part of the IntranetWare and NetWare client software, installed under %SystemRoot%System32 on the Windows versions supported by those older clients. It is documented as a 32-bit module associated with the Novell NetWare Login API for Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

That location does not make it a Microsoft system file. Windows 10 or Windows 11 can contain a legacy file under System32 because an older third-party installer placed it there, but Windows itself does not provide this module.
The later Client for Open Enterprise Server product continues the Novell client role by providing Windows connectivity to NetWare and Open Enterprise Server environments. Different client generations contain different builds and supporting modules, so a file from one release should not be mixed with files from another.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Novell Client
This is the most likely solution when the file is genuinely missing, damaged, or removed during an incomplete client update.
Before you start
Ask your IT administrator or network team for the exact client package used by your organization. Match:
- The Windows version
- The client generation
- The organization’s NetWare or Open Enterprise Server environment
- Any required authentication, policy, or network components
For supported environments, the vendor distributes Client for Open Enterprise Server through its official customer and marketplace channels. Older Novell Client packages may be available only through an organization’s software archive or administrator.
Do not copy lgnwnt32.dll from another PC. A matching filename does not prove that the build, dependencies, architecture, or client release is correct.

Install the official package
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Download or obtain the complete client installer from your organization or the official vendor channel.
- If the package is compressed, extract it to a new folder.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click
setup.exeand select Run as administrator. - Choose Express Installation unless your administrator supplied custom component instructions.
- Choose Custom Installation only when you need to preserve or select organization-specific client components.
- Let setup remove, repair, or replace the existing client files.
- Restart Windows when setup requests it, even if the desktop appears to work without restarting.
After rebooting, test the action that originally failed. Sign in through the Novell client, run the affected login script, change the password, or map the affected drive.

The installed client may be too old for the current Windows version, or the failure may be server-side. Give the administrator the complete error code and the client version shown in the installed client’s information or configuration panel.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the module
Security software can remove or quarantine an old client module. That does not automatically mean the detection is wrong, and the filename alone is not enough to justify restoring it.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection associated with the Novell client or
lgnwnt32.dll. - Record the detection name, original file path, date, and action taken.
- Ask your administrator to verify the client installation, the file’s signature, and the security verdict.
- Restore or allow the file only when the administrator has confirmed that it came from the organization’s approved client package.
If the file was restored, repair or reinstall the complete Novell Client afterward. That replaces related modules and dependencies instead of relying on a quarantined copy.
If the security product continues to remove it, do not repeatedly restore the file. The client may be obsolete, the package may be damaged, or the detection may identify a real threat. Resolve that with the administrator or vendor before attempting another login.

Not every LOGIN-LGNWNT32 error means that lgnwnt32.dll is missing.

Documented examples include:
| Error | What it can indicate |
|---|---|
LOGIN-LGNWNT32.DLL-100: Access has been denied. |
An incomplete login script or network communication problem |
LOGIN-LGNWNT32.DLL-740 |
The client could not execute an external program |
login-lgnwnt32.dll-710 |
A password change failed, including a password-policy failure |
LOGIN-LGNWNT32.DLL-430 |
A drive-mapping operation failed |
LOGIN-LGNWNT32-250 |
Windows reached the desktop before login scripts finished setting the default drive |
If the error appears only during drive mapping or login-script execution, check these items with the network administrator:
- Confirm that the server name resolves correctly.
- Check DNS and, where used, SLP configuration.
- Confirm that the NetWare or Open Enterprise Server system is reachable.
- Check that the target volume and directory still exist.
- Look for a conflicting drive letter already assigned in Windows.
- Review login-script syntax and external programs called by the script.
- Confirm that the account has permission to access the target path.
- Record the complete suffix, such as
-430,-710, or-250.
A successful DLL repair will not correct a missing server volume, invalid path, failed name lookup, password policy rejection, or insufficient permission.
Fix 4: Check client compatibility after a Windows change
The old Novell Client 4.91 generation was designed for older Windows releases, including Windows NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003. A legacy client can remain installed after a Windows upgrade even though its login modules are no longer supported on the new system.

If the failure began after upgrading Windows or replacing the computer:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Novell Client or Client for Open Enterprise Server.
- Note the installed product and version.
- Ask the administrator whether that release supports the current Windows version.
- Remove or upgrade the client only according to the organization’s migration instructions.
- Install the supported package and restart Windows.
Do not install a newer DLL into an old client directory. The login module may depend on other modules, services, registry settings, and authentication providers from the same release.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run some 32-bit client software, but that does not make arbitrary file copying safe. lgnwnt32.dll is documented as a 32-bit module. Copying it into either System32 or SysWOW64 does not establish compatibility and can make diagnosis harder.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself is showing broader corruption symptoms, such as damaged protected components or multiple unrelated system errors. They are not a replacement for reinstalling a third-party Novell module.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Novell login again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command guarantees repair of a third-party lgnwnt32.dll.
Repeating these commands will not fix an unsupported client, a quarantined module, a broken login script, or a server that cannot resolve its own name.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and identify repair work; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the Novell client remains the definitive fix when that client owns the DLL.

A network-driver problem is not the normal explanation for a missing lgnwnt32.dll, but it can contribute to login, name-resolution, or drive-mapping failures. Consider this path when the adapter disappeared, connectivity became unstable after an update, or the failure affects other network applications too.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver was installed.
- Test the Novell login and drive mapping again.
If Windows finds nothing, obtain the driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer, not from a generic driver archive. Do not uninstall the adapter unless you have a working driver and administrator instructions.
Manually checking every adapter and guessing which driver is stale is tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation of the driver requires the full version, and a driver update will not replace a missing Novell client module.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 lgnwnt32.dll
Microsoft’s regsvr32 utility is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A login or runtime module may not expose that entry point. If it does not, Windows can report that DllRegisterServer was not found.
Best Value
The Novell installer registers and configures the client as a complete product. Repair that installation instead of attempting to register the DLL by hand.
Avoid random DLL downloads
A DLL download site can provide:
- The wrong client build
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependent modules
- An altered or malicious file
- A file that does not match the installed client
It can also conceal the real cause, such as a failed login script or server connection. The safe sources are your organization’s approved software package, its administrator, and the official vendor distribution channel for the matching Client for Open Enterprise Server release.
FAQ
Is lgnwnt32.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 file?
No. It is a Novell client module. Historical installers placed it under the Windows system directory, but that does not make it part of Windows.
Can I copy it from another computer?
No. Different Novell client releases may use different builds and supporting modules. Repair or reinstall the complete matching client.
Does Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET reinstall this file?
There is no basis to treat those runtimes as the owner of lgnwnt32.dll. Identify and repair the Novell client instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I run SFC first?
Run DISM first, then SFC, when broader Windows corruption is suspected. These tools do not reliably restore third-party client files.
Why does the error mention drive mapping?
The documented LOGIN-LGNWNT32.DLL-430 family can involve DNS, SLP, server availability, paths, drive-letter conflicts, permissions, or login scripts. The filename alone does not prove that the DLL is damaged.
What should I give the administrator?
Provide the full error text and suffix, Windows version, Novell client version, the action that triggered it, the affected server or volume, the login-script line if known, and any recent Windows, antivirus, or client changes.
