“libdvdnav.dll” errors you may see
Windows or the affected application may display one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because libdvdnav.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “libdvdnav.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading libdvdnav.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: libdvdnav.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “libdvdnav.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
libdvdnav.dll is a third-party multimedia library used for DVD menus, navigation, multi-angle playback, and other interactive DVD features. It is not a Windows system file, and Windows does not normally provide it through System32, SysWOW64, Windows Update, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

The safest fix is to identify the application named in the error path, then repair or reinstall that application from its publisher. Older Freemake products are the clearest public Windows association for this filename, but Freemake is not proven to be the only application that can bundle it.

What causes the error
The usual causes are:
- The application installation is incomplete.
- The DLL was deleted or quarantined by antivirus software.
- The application is old or damaged on the current Windows installation.
- The DLL is present, but another dependency is missing.
- The application and DLL use incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit components.
- An unauthorized or corrupted DLL replaced the original file.
- Windows itself has damaged protected components, which is less likely for this application-private file.
The filename alone cannot establish the DLL’s version, size, bitness, hash, or publisher. Those details depend on the program that supplied it.
First, identify the application that owns the file
The error path is more useful than the filename.
For example:
C:Program Files (x86)FreemakeCOM1.1libdvdnav.dll
A path containing Freemake points toward a Freemake product, such as Video Converter, Video Downloader, or Audio Converter. A path containing another program’s folder points toward that program instead.
If the message does not show a path:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select the Details tab.
- Look for the application that failed to start.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
- Note the application folder and publisher.
- Do not search only by filename and replace the first copy you find.
A file in a temporary folder, an unrelated system directory, a user profile startup folder, or an unfamiliar application directory deserves additional antivirus and signature checks.

Fix 1: Repair the application
Start with Windows’ built-in repair option. This preserves the application’s intended folder structure and companion libraries.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named by the error path.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the program opens normally, the repair restored the missing or damaged dependency.
Some desktop applications do not expose a Settings repair option. For those programs:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if the installer provides it.
- Complete the wizard and restart the application.
Do not choose Reset first unless you are prepared to lose application settings. Reset can remove local configuration and saved data.
Fix 2: Uninstall and reinstall from the publisher
If repair does not work, reinstall the complete application. This is the most reliable solution when libdvdnav.dll is missing, damaged, or accompanied by missing dependencies.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the process.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again from its developer’s official website.
- Install the same product, choosing the normal installation location unless the publisher says otherwise.
- Start the application and repeat the DVD operation that previously failed.
For an older Freemake installation, use Freemake’s official downloads page and reinstall the relevant Freemake product rather than obtaining an isolated DLL.
Reinstalling the application matters because the DLL may rely on other private files in the same directory. Copying only libdvdnav.dll can leave the application in the same broken state.
If the installer fails, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and retry. Temporarily disabling security software is not a general solution. Instead, investigate any detection first.

Security software may remove a DLL after an installation or update. Check the history before downloading anything.
In Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or blocked items.
- Open an entry that mentions
libdvdnav.dllor the affected application. - Check the detected path and action.
Microsoft explains the restore and allow process in its Protection History documentation.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The parent application came from a trusted publisher.
- The path matches the application’s real installation directory.
- The file was installed as part of that application.
- Your security software’s scan and reputation information support restoring it.
If the file came from an unknown installer, a cracked application, a temporary directory, or an unrelated location, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted software, scan the system, and reinstall the legitimate application from its publisher.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application generally needs its 32-bit dependency set, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs 64-bit libraries and compatible companion files.

The filename does not reveal which architecture a particular DLL uses. Reinstalling the parent program is safer than trying to determine the architecture of an isolated download.
Check the application’s installation folder:
C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.C:Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.- These folder names are clues, not absolute proof.
Do not move a DLL between these folders. Do not place a 32-bit copy in System32, and do not assume that SysWOW64 means “64-bit DLL storage” in the way its name suggests. Windows uses those folders as part of its compatibility system, and manually adding application files can create conflicts.
If the error says the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows,” the file may be damaged, truncated, incompatible, or incorrectly built. Reinstall the complete application instead of substituting a different build.

Fix 5: Investigate a missing companion dependency
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that libdvdnav.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load a library it depends on.
Check whether libdvdnav.dll exists in the application folder. If it does, reinstall the entire parent program anyway. The installer should restore the matching dependency set and expected search path.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables at random. A particular application may require a Microsoft runtime, but there is no basis for treating libdvdnav.dll itself as a Microsoft runtime component. Install a runtime only when the application’s documentation or installer identifies it.
If the application has a built-in log, open it after the failure and look for a second missing module. For persistent errors, record:
- The complete error text.
- The full DLL path.
- The application name and version.
- Whether the DLL exists.
- Any antivirus action.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Your Windows edition and build.
Give that information to the application vendor.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows corruption is suspected
SFC and DISM are not normal sources for an application-private libdvdnav.dll. They repair Windows components and protected system resources, so use them when other Windows features are also failing or system corruption is suspected.

- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence and explains SFC behavior in its System File Checker documentation.
The result does not prove that the application DLL was repaired. If the application still reports the same error, return to the parent program’s installer.
Running repeated scans without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by showing a scan of problems before repair, but its full repair is optional and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

An outdated multimedia application may fail after a Windows change. Install the newest supported version from the application publisher before trying compatibility workarounds.
To check Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart and test the application.
Drivers are not the normal cause of a missing application DLL, but update them if DVD playback, graphics output, optical-drive access, or other hardware functions are also failing.
To check a device manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, Display adapters, or the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you inspect many devices manually, but its full driver installation is optional and it cannot replace reinstalling the program that owns libdvdnav.dll.
Commands and fixes that usually do not apply
regsvr32
Do not run:
regsvr32 libdvdnav.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A multimedia support library is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
If an application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL, follow that documentation. Otherwise, registration is not a general missing-DLL repair. Microsoft documents the command’s scope in its regsvr32 reference.
Windows Features
Opening Turn Windows features on or off will not normally restore an application-bundled DVD library. Use Windows Features only when the application explicitly requires a named Windows feature.
Device Manager
Device Manager cannot restore a missing application DLL. Use it for hardware or driver symptoms, not as the first response to this filename.

Use System Restore only if the failure began immediately after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists:

- Review the available restore points.
- Choose one created before the failure.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore is secondary. It should not replace reinstalling the affected application.
Do not confuse this file with VLC’s plugin
VLC may contain a differently named file called libdvdnav_plugin.dll. That name does not automatically mean it is the same file as libdvdnav.dll.
If the error path points into VLC, repair or reinstall VLC. If it points into Freemake or another multimedia application, repair or reinstall that application instead. Never copy a VLC plugin into another program’s folder.
FAQ
Is libdvdnav.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party multimedia library. Windows does not normally install it in System32 or SysWOW64.

Does Freemake always own this DLL?
No. Older Freemake products have the clearest public Windows association, but other multimedia applications may bundle their own build. The error path identifies the likely owner.
Should I download libdvdnav.dll separately?
Generally no. Random DLL sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not include required companion libraries. Use the parent application’s official installer.
What if the DLL exists but Windows still says it is missing?
A dependency may be missing, or the DLL may be damaged or incompatible. Reinstall the complete application rather than copying over only the named file.
Should I run SFC?
Run SFC when Windows itself appears corrupted or multiple system features are failing. It normally will not restore an application-private libdvdnav.dll.
What if antivirus keeps quarantining it?
Do not repeatedly restore it. Check the file path, publisher, signature, and installer source. If they do not match a trusted application, remove the software and scan the system.
What should I do if reinstalling does not help?
Confirm that the error path is from the program you reinstalled, check for a missing companion dependency, verify 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility, and contact the application vendor with the complete path and error details.
