libgmodule-2.0-0.dll is a GLib runtime library used by GTK-based Windows applications, not a Windows system file or Visual C++ component. The safest fix is to identify the program named in the error, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer instead of downloading this DLL by itself.
What this file actually does
GModule is part of GLib, the low-level library commonly used by GTK applications. It handles portable loading and management of modules and plugins; on Windows, that means working with DLL-based modules.

The filename can appear with older desktop applications, games, image tools, standalone GTK bundles, or programs built through MSYS2 or MinGW. There is no single application that owns it, and the exact build can vary between programs.
This file is not:
- A protected Windows component
- Part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- A DirectX file
- A .NET file
- A graphics-driver file
- Something that should normally be copied into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64
A correct copy usually lives beside the affected executable, inside the program’s bin directory, in a bundled GTK runtime, or within the matching MSYS2 environment.
#1 Best Overall
The 2.0 in the filename identifies the GModule API or ABI family. It is not a Windows version number, and the filename alone does not tell you the exact GLib release, file size, or architecture.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the most reliable fix because libgmodule-2.0-0.dll normally ships as part of an application’s complete GTK/GLib runtime.
Identify the owning program
- Read the full error window and note the executable name if it is shown.
- If the error appears while launching a shortcut, right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check the Target field.
- Note the application folder, especially whether it contains a
bindirectory or other GTK/GLib DLLs. - If the program is a game, open its launcher and look for Verify files, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or Repair.
Do not assume that the program whose shortcut you clicked is the only possible caller. A launcher, plugin host, updater, or file association may be starting a different executable.
Use the program’s repair option
The exact wording varies, but the usual process is:
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
- Restart the application.
If there is no repair option, open the application’s own installer or launcher and look for a repair or file-verification command.
A successful repair restores the program’s matching DLL set. The application should start without the original error, and you should not need to copy files into a Windows system directory.
Reinstall from the official source
If repair fails:
- Back up documents, saves, presets, or other user data stored outside the installation directory.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Download the installer from the application developer or the original trusted distribution channel.
- Install the same edition and architecture used previously.
- Launch the program before adding plugins or third-party modifications.
Do not delete user folders blindly. Some older applications store settings and personal files inside their installation directory, so preserve anything you need before removing leftover program files.

If a clean reinstall immediately loses the DLL again, check antivirus history before reinstalling repeatedly.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a DLL after an update, a changed signature, or a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the affected application or
libgmodule-2.0-0.dll. - Open an entry to inspect its path and detection details.
- Restore the file only when the application came from a trusted official source and the quarantined path belongs to that application.
- Reinstall or repair the application afterward so its complete runtime is restored.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion just to make the error disappear. If the file is repeatedly detected, stop and verify the installer, its origin, its digital signature, and the rest of the application files.
If the DLL was found in an unexpected temporary folder or beside an unrelated executable, do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
Fix 3: Match the application’s architecture
A 32-bit application requires a 32-bit GLib runtime. A 64-bit application requires a 64-bit runtime. Windows cannot make those builds interchangeable.
Check the application’s installer, official documentation, or package name. For MSYS2 environments, the architecture is normally visible in the package prefix:
mingw-w64-i686-indicates 32-bitmingw-w64-x86_64-indicates 64-bit
For an MSYS2-built program, open the matching MSYS2 terminal and reinstall the corresponding GLib package.
For 64-bit MinGW:
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-glib2
For 32-bit MinGW:
pacman -S mingw-w64-i686-glib2
Use the package that matches the application’s environment. Installing a 64-bit package does not repair a 32-bit program, and installing MSYS2 is not the correct solution for an ordinary application that shipped its own GTK runtime.

Older applications may require a legacy runtime layout and a specific set of companion libraries.
Fix 4: Remove mixed or stray GTK runtimes
An entry-point error often means Windows found a DLL, but it found the wrong build. This can happen after installing multiple GTK applications, editing PATH, copying DLLs between programs, or adding a development environment.
Check the following:
- Open the application’s installation directory.
- Look for
libgmodule-2.0-0.dll,libglib-2.0-0.dll, and other nearby GTK/GLib files. - Check whether the program has its own
bindirectory. - Do not replace one file while leaving incompatible companion files in place.
- If you manually added GTK or MSYS2 directories to the system
PATH, temporarily remove or isolate them. - Restore the application’s original directory structure through Repair or reinstall.
A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that libgmodule-2.0-0.dll exists but another dependency does not. Possible missing companions include other GLib libraries, internationalization libraries, compression libraries, or runtime dependencies. Replacing only the named DLL usually creates another error instead of fixing the dependency chain.
Fix 5: Check the launcher and application permissions
A blocked or incomplete update can leave the launcher unable to access its own runtime.

- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only for testing.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program once.
If it works only as administrator, the underlying issue may be permissions on the installation directory, a security product blocking file access, or an incomplete update. Administrator mode is not a substitute for repairing the runtime, and it is better to correct the installation than to leave every application running elevated.
For a game launcher, use its built-in verification process first. That normally compares and restores the complete set of files rather than guessing which DLL is missing.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
SFC and DISM do not normally recreate libgmodule-2.0-0.dll, because it is a third-party application library rather than a protected Windows resource. Use these commands when the error appeared alongside broader Windows corruption, failed updates, crashes, or damaged system components.
Run DISM
- Open Start and type
Terminal. - Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Terminal again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows. After restarting, repair or reinstall the affected application again.
Recommended Free Tools
Running these commands can repair Windows infrastructure that prevents installers from working, but a successful SFC scan does not prove that the application’s GLib runtime is intact.
When manually tracking damaged Windows components means repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what it finds; repairs are handled by the full version, and reinstalling the affected GTK application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

A graphics or chipset driver does not provide libgmodule-2.0-0.dll, so updating drivers is not a direct repair for this file. Consider it only if the same application also crashes with display, rendering, or device errors.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics hardware.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers if the affected application uses audio.
- Expand System devices for chipset-related hardware.
- Right-click a device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package when Windows cannot find a suitable update. Do not replace the GLib DLL with a graphics-driver file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If checking every device manually leaves you guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues; the full version handles driver installation, while the application’s own repair or reinstall remains the correct fix for libgmodule-2.0-0.dll.
What not to do
- Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website.
- Do not copy it into
System32orSysWOW64as a general fix. - Do not use a copy from another application just because the filename matches.
- Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
- Do not run
regsvr32on this file.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. GModule is a runtime library, not a COM registration component, so registration will not install its dependencies or repair an application.
If manual replacement is unavoidable, obtain the file from the same trusted application installer or package, match the executable’s architecture, and restore the complete companion runtime. An isolated file is rarely enough.

FAQ
Is libgmodule-2.0-0.dll from Windows?
No. It belongs to GLib and is commonly bundled with GTK-based applications. It is not a protected Windows component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs it part of Visual C++?
No. Installing or repairing the Visual C++ Redistributable does not normally provide this file. Install the application’s own runtime first, and install other runtimes only when that program specifically requires them.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the DLL is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing library. It can also be the wrong architecture or an incompatible build. Restore the complete matching runtime instead of replacing the visible filename.
What does an entry-point error mean?
It usually indicates that Windows loaded an incompatible GLib or GTK build. Remove mixed runtime files and repair or reinstall the application that requested the DLL.
Should I install MSYS2?
Only if the program was built for and depends on an MSYS2 environment. Most ordinary users should repair the application’s bundled GTK runtime instead.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will SFC fix this file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while this is normally a third-party application DLL. SFC and DISM are useful when broader Windows corruption is also present.
How do I know the repair worked?
Launch the original program from its normal shortcut or launcher. If it starts without the missing-file, dependency, or entry-point message, the matching runtime has been restored. If the error returns, record the exact executable path, DLL location, architecture, and antivirus history before trying another repair.
