libtiff.dll is missing because the application that uses it cannot find a compatible copy of its TIFF imaging library. libtiff.dll is not a Windows system file, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the program that displayed the error rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What libtiff.dll is
LibTIFF is an open-source library used by Windows applications to read and write TIFF images. Imaging, scanning, GIS, document, engineering, archive, and older utility programs may include their own compiled copy.

The file does not have one universal version, architecture, or dependency set. Two applications can both use the name libtiff.dll while requiring different builds. The correct file depends on the application’s compiler, architecture, exported functions, bundled dependencies, and sometimes vendor-specific changes.

Real Windows programs can bundle LibTIFF as part of their own installation. Therefore, do not assume that the file belongs to one publisher or that the latest upstream LibTIFF build is a drop-in replacement.

First, identify the program that failed
The program named in the error is more important than the DLL filename.
Look at the title bar and message text. It may say:
The code execution cannot proceed because libtiff.dll was not found[Program].exe - System ErrorCould not load libtiff.dllThe specified module could not be foundThe procedure entry point ... could not be located in the dynamic link library libtiff.dll[Program].exe - Bad Image
Write down the exact application name and its installation path.
If the error appears when opening a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and folder.
- Select Cancel.
You can also find the executable location from Task Manager:
- Start the affected program, if it opens far enough to appear.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Processes or Details.
- Right-click the program.
- Select Open file location.
Check whether the application is installed in Program Files, Program Files (x86), a vendor folder, or a custom package directory. A libtiff.dll beside that application’s executable is more credible than a file in System32, Temp, Downloads, or an unrelated folder.
Fix 1: Repair or verify the owning application
This is the most likely solution for libtiff.dll errors.
Repair a Windows application
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program that shows the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The repair process normally restores missing application files without removing your settings. If Repair is unavailable, select Reset only after checking whether the program stores important settings or data locally.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a traditional desktop program:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Not every program exposes a repair option. Microsoft also documents these repair paths in its Windows app and program repair instructions.
Verify files in an application launcher
If the program came from a launcher, open that launcher and look for commands named:
- Verify files
- Scan and repair
- Repair installation
- Validate files
- Check for updates
Allow the launcher to replace missing files, then start the program from the launcher rather than from an old desktop shortcut.
Reinstall from the publisher
If repair or verification fails:
- Back up the program’s documents, profiles, templates, and license information.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s publisher or your organization’s approved software source.
- Install the same application family and architecture you were using before.
- Launch it once before restoring custom settings.
A clean reinstall restores the exact libtiff.dll build expected by that application. It also fixes a moved program folder, an interrupted update, a failed reinstall, or a shortcut that points to an old installation.

If the problem began immediately after an update, use the publisher’s repair or rollback option if one exists. Do not replace the updated DLL with an older file copied from another computer.
Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an application file. Do not restore the file automatically just because the filename appears in the error.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with the affected application.
- Check the complete file path and detection name.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these points are clear:
- The path belongs to the application you intentionally installed.
- The application came from its publisher or an approved source.
- The file is part of the original installer.
- You can verify the publisher and the program’s integrity.
- The detection is a false positive rather than an unwanted or modified program.
If you cannot verify the file, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how these decisions work.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Do not add the entire installation folder as an antivirus exclusion unless the publisher or your administrator specifically requires it.
Fix 3: Check architecture and dependent files
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The application’s architecture determines which libtiff.dll build it needs.
- A program in
Program Files (x86)is commonly 32-bit. - A program in
Program Filesmay be 64-bit, but the folder alone is not definitive. - A 32-bit application still needs compatible 32-bit libraries on 64-bit Windows.
To check the error more carefully, note whether it mentions another file:
zlib.dlllibjpeg.dllmsvcp*.dllvcruntime*.dll
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that libtiff.dll exists but one of its dependencies is absent. An entry point not found message usually means that the wrong LibTIFF build is present. Bad Image commonly points to corruption, wrong architecture, or an incompatible binary.

Do not download each named file separately. Repair or reinstall the owning application first.
Install a missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
If the error specifically names VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll, or a similar Microsoft runtime file:
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Download the package matching the application:
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit applicationvc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit applicationvc_redist.arm64.exefor an ARM64 application- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
On 64-bit Windows, installing both x86 and x64 packages can be appropriate when you use applications of both architectures. Older programs may require a separate legacy Visual C++ package; Microsoft lists those separately on the same page.
The Visual C++ Redistributable does not normally install libtiff.dll. It can repair a dependency that prevents an otherwise correct application DLL from loading.
Fix 4: Reinstall or update the application’s drivers
A scanner, camera, capture device, plotter, or specialized imaging program may load LibTIFF through its device software. If the failure began after a Windows or driver update, reinstall the driver and the associated application from the device manufacturer.

To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use the manufacturer’s official installer to update or reinstall it.
Do not use Device Manager’s generic search as the only repair method for specialized imaging hardware. The vendor’s complete package may contain both the driver and the application component that owns libtiff.dll.
Manually hunting through many driver versions can be slow, especially when Windows reports only a vague device error. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what needs attention, while the full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the affected imaging application remains the definitive fix when that program owns libtiff.dll.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when several programs fail
libtiff.dll is not normally restored by Windows repair commands. Use DISM and System File Checker when several unrelated applications fail, Windows features behave unusually, or the problem began after an unexpected shutdown or storage problem.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Save your work, then:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally supplies a third-party libtiff.dll.
If repeated repairs, version hunting, and storage checks are becoming difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found; the free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the correct fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Microsoft documents the commands in its DISM repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.
Fix 6: Check recent changes and restore the correct path
Think about what changed before the error appeared:
Recommended Free Tools
- The application updated or failed to reinstall.
- The program folder was moved.
- A backup was restored.
- Disk cleanup removed application files.
- A Windows or driver update changed dependencies.
- The computer shut down unexpectedly.
- The storage drive began reporting errors.
- An old shortcut started an obsolete copy of the program.
If the program was moved manually, restore it to its original location or reinstall it. Recreate shortcuts after reinstalling:
- Open the program’s installation folder.
- Right-click the correct
.exe. - Select Show more options if necessary.
- Choose Send to > Desktop (shortcut).
Do not add random folders to the global PATH. That can make Windows load an incompatible DLL for another program.
If the failure began after a known system change, review Settings > System > Recovery. System Restore may help when an available restore point predates the failure. Microsoft describes the available choices in its Windows recovery options.
What not to do
Do not download a random libtiff.dll
DLL download sites sites may provide malware, an obsolete build, the wrong architecture, or a file with different exports and dependencies. A file with the correct name can still be incompatible, unsigned, or modified.
Use the original application installer, the publisher’s repair process, or an approved software repository instead.
Do not copy it into System32
System32 is not a universal DLL drop-off location. Copying a vendor library there can create DLL search-order conflicts and affect unrelated applications. Keep the file in the application directory unless the publisher explicitly documents another location.
Do not register it with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal LibTIFF runtime library is loaded by the application and ordinarily does not require registration.
Running:
regsvr32 libtiff.dll
will often produce an error saying that the entry point was not found. That does not prove the file is corrupt. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
If the error remains
Collect these details before contacting the application vendor:
- Exact error text
- Application name and version
- Windows version
- Application architecture
- Full executable path
- Full
libtiff.dllpath, if a copy exists - Whether Defender quarantined a file
- Whether the message says missing, dependency failure, entry point, or Bad Image
- Any additional DLL names in the error
- What repair or reinstall steps you already completed
This information lets the vendor provide the correct build instead of guessing from the filename alone.
FAQ
Is libtiff.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party application library used for TIFF image processing.
Where should libtiff.dll be located?
Usually beside the application’s executable or in a vendor-specific package folder. The correct path depends on the program that installed it.
Will the latest LibTIFF release fix the error?
Not necessarily. The application may require an older, customized, 32-bit, or otherwise specific build.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable install libtiff.dll?
No. It can repair missing Microsoft runtime dependencies, but it does not normally supply the application’s LibTIFF file.
Should I install both Visual C++ x86 and x64 packages?
That can be appropriate on 64-bit Windows when you use both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Match the package to the application, not merely to Windows.
Can I fix this with SFC?
Usually not by itself. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while libtiff.dll normally belongs to a third-party application. Use SFC when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
Why does the error say the specified module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency of libtiff.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible or corrupted. Repair the owning application rather than adding unrelated DLLs.
Does libtiff.dll need registration?
Normally no. It is generally loaded by the application and is not installed with regsvr32.
