libwim-15.dll errors usually mean the application that installed this wimlib library is incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or using the wrong architecture.
Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL. First identify the program requesting the file, then repair that program or restore the complete official wimlib package it uses.

Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches your situation:
- The error names a familiar app or tool: Use that program’s Repair, Verify, Update, or reinstall option.
- You recently updated, reinstalled, cleaned, or restored software: The application directory may be incomplete. Reinstall the exact parent program.
- The error appeared after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection history for a quarantined
libwim-15.dll. - You use
wimlib-imagex.exedirectly: Download the official wimlib Windows package matching your system and extract the complete archive. - The message changed to “entry point not found”: A DLL is present, but it may be the wrong version or incompatible with the application.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or shows
0xc000007b: Check architecture, corruption, and the exact status code. - Several Windows components are failing: Run DISM and SFC later in the process. They do not normally restore this third-party library.
What libwim-15.dll is
libwim-15.dll is a genuine Windows dynamic-link library from wimlib, an open-source C library for creating, extracting, modifying, and mounting Windows Imaging Format files. Those files commonly use the .wim, .swm, or .esd extensions.
The usual companion executable is wimlib-imagex.exe. A program that works with Windows installation images may call the library when it starts or when you perform an imaging operation.

This is not a protected Windows system file. It is not supplied by Windows itself, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. It normally belongs beside the application that loads it rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The 15 identifies the library ABI family. It does not mean that every legitimate copy has the same file size, metadata, or architecture.
Some .NET applications bundle wimlib through a wrapper such as ManagedWimLib. In that situation, architecture-specific native files may be stored inside the application’s output or runtime folders instead of beside a standalone imaging tool.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

The filename alone does not tell you which program is broken. Windows reports the missing dependency, but the dialog may not clearly identify the caller.
Start with the error’s wording and context:
- Write down the name of the application shown in the title bar.
- Note whether the error appeared while opening a backup tool, imaging utility, installer, recovery program, or developer application.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Record the executable name and installation folder.
- If the program is already open, press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Task Manager’s Details tab and look for the related
.exe. - Right-click it and select Open file location.
Also ask what changed immediately before the failure:
- Did you reinstall or update the application?
- Did a cleanup utility remove files?
- Did you restore the program from a backup?
- Did an antivirus product quarantine something?
- Did you move the application folder?
- Did you copy only part of a portable tool to another computer?
The executable name and its folder determine the correct repair. Do not replace a file before you know which program loads it.
2. Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the safest and most likely fix because the parent installer knows which wimlib build and supporting files belong together.
Use Windows’ installed-app repair option
- Press
Windows+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, select Installed apps. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find the application that produced the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data. For many desktop programs, the better next step is a clean reinstall from the developer’s official installer.
Reinstall from the official source
- Download the installer from the application developer or the software’s official distribution channel.
- Close the application and any related background process.
- Uninstall the damaged program through Settings → Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again using the correct installer.
- Start it once before restoring custom settings or plugins.
If a launcher manages the software, open the launcher and use its Verify files, Repair, or equivalent command. The launcher should compare and restore the complete application directory.
If the program is portable, obtain a fresh archive from its official source and extract the entire package to a new folder. Do not copy only libwim-15.dll from another installation.
A successful repair usually removes the loader dialog and lets the application open. If the error changes to an entry-point or dependency message, the file was restored but the package still does not match the executable.

3. Restore the official wimlib package if you use wimlib-imagex
If the failing executable is wimlib-imagex.exe, use the official wimlib Windows downloads rather than a third-party DLL repository.
The official Windows distribution includes the executable, libwim-15.dll, command wrappers, documentation, licenses, and development files. Download the complete ZIP that matches the calling program and machine:
i686is for 32-bit applications.x86_64is for 64-bit applications.aarch64is for ARM64 software on supported Windows systems.
Then:
- Move the downloaded ZIP to a normal working folder.
- Right-click it and select Extract All.
- Extract the complete package, not just the DLL.
- Confirm that
libwim-15.dllis in the expected application folder. - Confirm that
wimlib-imagex.exeand the library came from the same archive. - Run the tool from that extracted folder.
Do not place the file globally in System32, SysWOW64, or another Windows directory. The loader should find the library beside the program that requires it.
4. Check 32-bit, 64-bit, and ARM64 compatibility
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit program, but a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. The reverse mismatch also causes failures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo check the operating system:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
That tells you the Windows installation architecture, but not necessarily the application architecture. To inspect the program:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- If present, right-click the column headings and enable Architecture.
- Check the relevant executable.
Some applications also document their architecture in their installation folder, installer name, or help screen. A .NET wrapper may have separate native x86, x64, and ARM64 files under runtime-specific directories.
Install the matching application build and native library together. Do not assume that downloading a “32-bit” copy is correct simply because one catalog lists libwim-15.dll as 32-bit. That metadata does not describe every legitimate wimlib package.
5. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a library after an update or during extraction. Reinstalling repeatedly will not help if the file is deleted again immediately.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for
libwim-15.dllor the application that owns it. - Verify the file’s original path and package source before taking action.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have confirmed that it came from the legitimate application installer or the official wimlib package. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. Protection History is retained for a limited period, so an older event may no longer be visible.
If reinstalling causes the DLL to disappear again, do not blindly disable antivirus protection or add a broad exclusion. Verify the installer, scan the package, and inspect the security product’s detailed detection information.
6. Check for application permissions and damaged files
A valid DLL can appear missing when the application cannot access its folder.

- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that your account has permission to read and execute files in the installation folder.
- If the program is installed under a protected location, start it using Run as administrator as a diagnostic test.
Administrator mode is not a permanent substitute for correct permissions. If it works only as administrator, repair the folder permissions or reinstall the application to a suitable location.
Also inspect the application’s own logs. Look for the exact path Windows tried to load, the executable architecture, and any dependency or status code. If a new Windows user profile can run the program, the original profile or its application settings may be damaged.
7. Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. libwim-15.dll is a runtime library, not normally a COM server.
Running commands such as these will not repair it:
regsvr32 libwim-15.dll
They usually produce a registration error or create the impression that the wrong repair was attempted. Use regsvr32 only when the software’s vendor explicitly identifies a DLL as a COM component and supplies registration instructions.
Do not copy the library into System32 or SysWOW64, either. That can make another program load an incompatible version and create a harder-to-diagnose failure.
8. Use DISM and SFC only for suspected Windows corruption
Because libwim-15.dll normally belongs to an application, Windows component repair tools are lower priority. They do not normally restore an application-owned wimlib file.
Use them when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, protected system files are failing, or other built-in components are damaged:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands and test the application again.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed: its free scan identifies reported problems, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns libwim-15.dll.

A driver update is not a normal fix for a missing wimlib library. Consider it only when the application also crashes with graphics, storage, imaging-device, or hardware-access errors.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Outbyte Driver Updater removes the guesswork of hunting through many driver versions: its free scan shows reported outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the application that supplies libwim-15.dll.
10. Investigate persistent failures
If every reinstall fails, collect evidence instead of trying more DLL copies:

A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an invalid replacement. An error such as 0xc000007b can also point to a binary-format mismatch, but confirm the exact code before choosing a repair.
If malware or disk corruption is plausible, run a full Microsoft Defender scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan, check disk health, and restore the application from a known-good official installer or backup. Do not restore an unknown DLL simply because its filename matches.
Prevention
Keep the complete application folder together, use the program’s own updater or launcher verification feature, and retain the original installer for recovery. Avoid registry cleaners and DLL “fixer” utilities that replace files without checking the calling application.
The correct repair is usually simple once the caller is known: restore the parent application or matching official wimlib package, use the right architecture, and keep the library beside the executable that loads it.

FAQ
Is libwim-15.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a wimlib library used by third-party imaging software and applications that bundle wimlib.
Can I download just libwim-15.dll?
Generally, no. An isolated copy may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the application. Restore the complete official package instead.
Where should the DLL be located?
Usually beside the program that loads it. Some wrappers place architecture-specific copies inside application output or runtime folders.
Will installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Not normally. Those components do not generally supply libwim-15.dll. Install them only when the parent application’s official requirements specifically call for them.
Should I run regsvr32?
No. This runtime library is not normally a COM server, so registration does not repair a missing or incompatible copy.
Will SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while libwim-15.dll is normally owned by an application.
What if the DLL exists but the program still fails?
Check whether it matches the executable’s architecture and application version. An entry-point error often means the file is the wrong build rather than absent.
