LightBurn.exe is the Windows program file for LightBurn, a cross-platform application that designs, prepares and sends jobs to compatible laser machines. It is software, not a laser or a general-purpose graphics editor. Whether it can control your machine depends mainly on the machine’s controller type, so identify that controller before choosing LightBurn Core or Pro.
What is LightBurn.exe?
LightBurn.exe is the executable that starts LightBurn on Windows. LightBurn lets you create or import artwork, arrange it on a virtual workspace, assign cutting or engraving operations and send the resulting job to a supported laser controller. The executable is one component of the installed application; deleting or moving it can prevent LightBurn from launching.

LightBurn is designed specifically for laser workflows. It is not the firmware inside a laser, and it cannot make an incompatible controller work. A machine’s brand name alone is not enough to determine compatibility: two machines sold under different names may use the same controller class, while machines from one manufacturer can use different controllers.

A LightBurn.exe file obtained from the official LightBurn download or trial page is the appropriate installer source. Avoid copies bundled with unofficial “cracks,” repackaged installers or random download sites; those packages can be modified and may not include the current application.

LightBurn’s documentation says users accept responsibility for safety associated with the laser machine, laser system and LightBurn software. Software safety does not remove the need for physical precautions: use the machine’s enclosure and interlocks correctly, follow its operating instructions and never leave an active laser unattended.
If Windows reports that LightBurn.exe is blocked, quarantine it or displays an unexpected warning, do not bypass the warning immediately. Confirm that you downloaded the installer from LightBurn’s official site, scan the installer with your security software and download a fresh copy if the file is incomplete. A warning caused by an untrusted or damaged package is different from a normal Windows permission prompt.
How LightBurn communicates with a laser
LightBurn prepares a job on the computer, then sends it through the connection supported by the machine and its controller. Depending on the controller, that connection can involve USB, a network connection or another interface supplied by the manufacturer. The exact options exposed in LightBurn depend on the controller and on the machine maker’s implementation.

| Edition | Controller support | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| LightBurn Core | GCode devices | Machines whose controller accepts GCode |
| LightBurn Pro | GCode, DSP and Galvo devices | Setups that require DSP or Galvo support, as well as GCode |
Camera alignment, rotary attachments and other accessories are not automatically supported merely because a machine can run LightBurn. Their operation depends on the particular laser, controller and manufacturer-supported features. Check the machine documentation and LightBurn’s compatibility information before buying a license or accessory.
Do you need LightBurn Core or Pro?
Choose Core for a GCode controller
Core is intended for a laser whose controller is identified as GCode. Typical signs include a controller manual that describes GCode operation or a manufacturer specification that explicitly lists GCode compatibility. Confirm the exact controller model rather than inferring it from the machine’s product name.
Choose Pro for DSP or Galvo hardware
Pro adds support for DSP and Galvo controller classes while retaining GCode support. If the machine documentation identifies a DSP or Galvo controller, Pro is the relevant tier. If you cannot identify the controller, ask the machine manufacturer or consult the controller label and manual before purchasing.

Current Windows requirements
The LightBurn 2.1 installation guidance recommends 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. The same guide lists macOS 12 or newer for Mac users. On Windows, the practical minimum is a 64-bit dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 1280×1024 display and at least 450 MB of free installation space.
| Requirement | Practical minimum | Recommended for smoother work |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit |
| Processor | 64-bit dual-core | A newer processor helps when designing and multitasking |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8–16 GB RAM |
| Display | 1280×1024 | 1920×1080 |
| Storage | 450 MB free installation space | SSD storage |
These are product requirements, not an independent performance benchmark. A computer that meets the minimum may still feel constrained when you keep many applications open, work with complex designs or use camera and machine-control features at the same time.
Is LightBurn a subscription?
No. LightBurn describes its licensing this way: “LightBurn is not a subscription service. Buy LightBurn once and use it forever, with a year of updates included.” The official licensing documentation explains the update arrangement.
A standard license provides three computer seats. A new license includes one year of updates. After that update period ends, you can continue using the newest version released during your valid period; purchasing another year of updates is required for later releases. The license model and update entitlement are separate from whether your machine uses Core or Pro. Read the current terms at LightBurn’s licensing documentation before buying.

How to download and install LightBurn.exe safely
- Identify your Windows edition. Open Settings, choose System, then About, and confirm that Windows is 64-bit. Also check that the system is Windows 10 or 11 if you want the currently recommended platform.
- Confirm the controller. Find the controller model in the laser’s manual, label or manufacturer support information. Decide whether the machine needs Core or Pro before purchasing.
- Use LightBurn’s official download or trial page. Select the Windows installer supplied by LightBurn rather than a repackaged third-party download.
- Check free space. Keep at least 450 MB available for installation, with additional room for your project files and exported jobs.
- Run the installer. Open the downloaded installer, review the prompts and allow Windows to request administrator approval if necessary. Keep the default installation location unless you have a reason to change it.
- Launch LightBurn. Start it from the Start menu or its desktop shortcut. Sign in or enter the license information requested by the application, or select the available trial option.
- Add and test the device. In LightBurn’s device setup, select the controller or machine profile that matches your hardware. Connect the laser using the manufacturer’s recommended method, then test discovery with the machine powered on but the laser output disabled.
- Run a low-risk test job. Begin with a small outline or framing operation on suitable scrap material. Verify origin, scale, direction and focus before enabling a cutting or engraving pass.
Fixes when LightBurn.exe will not start
1. Restart and check the installation
Close LightBurn and restart Windows. Try launching it from the Start menu instead of an old shortcut. If the shortcut points to a file that was moved or removed, create a new shortcut from the installed application.
2. Check Windows permissions
Right-click the LightBurn shortcut, choose Properties and inspect the Compatibility and Security tabs. Avoid enabling compatibility modes blindly; they can introduce different behavior. If the application is installed in a protected folder and Windows denies access, use an administrator account or ask the computer’s administrator to repair the installation.
3. Reinstall from a fresh official installer
When files are missing or damaged, uninstall LightBurn through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows and install a newly downloaded official installer. Keep your license details and device configuration available before removing the old installation.
4. Investigate security software blocks
Open your security software’s protection history and look for a LightBurn entry. Only restore or allow the file after verifying that the installer came from LightBurn’s official site and that the alert is a false positive. If the installer was obtained elsewhere, discard it and download a clean copy.

5. Capture useful crash information
Record the exact error text, Windows version, LightBurn version, controller model and the action that preceded the crash. The LightBurn support hub provides troubleshooting, licensing help, previous releases and direct support contact; those details make a support request more actionable than a screenshot alone.
Fixes when LightBurn opens but cannot connect to the laser
- Power the laser and controller on, then confirm the cable or network connection is seated and connected to the port specified by the manufacturer.
- Close other laser-control programs that may have the controller connection open.
- In LightBurn’s device setup, verify the selected controller type, communication method, origin and work area. A wrong profile can make a physically connected machine appear unusable.
- Disconnect and reconnect the machine, then restart LightBurn. If Windows assigns a different connection after reconnection, select the newly detected device.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for required controller drivers or firmware. Do not install a driver intended for a different controller family.
- Test with the machine’s laser output disabled or with a safe framing command. Stop immediately if movement, origin or scale is wrong.
Common licensing and update problems
License works on one computer but not another
A standard license has three seats, but each installation still needs the correct license details. Confirm that you are using the account or key associated with the purchase and that the computer has internet access if activation requires it.
An update is not included
Check the date your update entitlement began. You can continue using the latest release covered by that entitlement; a later release may require another year of updates. Do not assume that installing a newer build automatically extends the update period.
The trial or activation screen keeps returning
Close duplicate LightBurn processes, restart Windows and enter the license information again. If the issue persists, note the exact version and activation message and contact LightBurn support rather than repeatedly deleting application files.
Manual checks before every first job
- Confirm the controller class and selected LightBurn edition.
- Verify that the machine profile has the correct work area, origin and movement direction.
- Use the manufacturer’s enclosure, interlocks, ventilation and protective procedures.
- Frame the job with output disabled before cutting or engraving.
- Keep a copy of your project file and any machine-specific configuration you may need to restore.
- Stop if the machine behaves differently from the preview; software cannot compensate for an unsafe hardware setup.
As an optional shortcut for Windows installation errors, damaged system elements or LightBurn crashes, Outbyte PC Repair can check and repair more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, reduce some CPU, RAM and disk load through setting tweaks, clean temporary and cache files, and provide vulnerability checks and crash logs. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
Bottom line
LightBurn.exe is the Windows executable for LightBurn’s laser-design and machine-control application. Download it from LightBurn’s official site, verify that your computer meets the 64-bit Windows requirements and identify the laser’s controller before choosing Core or Pro. The license is perpetual, includes one year of updates and allows three seats, while safe operation still depends on the machine, its controller and the operator’s physical safety procedures.
