Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is a Majima-led action-adventure spin-off that pairs land combat with ship battles, crew management, exploration, and the series’ familiar appetite for side activities. Its appeal depends on whether that pirate framework and Goro Majima’s return sound more enticing than the turn-based RPG format used by some recent mainline entries.
What is Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii?
Set after Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the game follows Goro Majima, who washes ashore on a remote island with no memory. He teams up with Noah and pursues clues to his past as a conflict over legendary treasure takes shape. SEGA describes it as a brand-new action-adventure starring Majima, rather than a continuation of the mainline RPG format. SEGA’s launch announcement gives the story setup and places its events after Infinite Wealth.
The adventure moves between Hawaiian islands and open water. Majima explores and fights on land, sails the Goromaru, commands the Goro Pirates, and faces enemy crews in naval battles. Crew recruitment, ship customization, and minigames round out the activities. These systems make the game’s identity more specific than “Majima in a new setting”: it is a pirate adventure built around both the series’ action and its diversions. SEGA’s game page lists the action-adventure genre and features.
How does the pirate format change the appeal?
Land combat and sea battles
SEGA classifies the game as Action Adventure and lists one player. Its description includes fighting on land as well as ship-to-ship pirate battles. Readers expecting the turn-based combat of some recent Like a Dragon entries should therefore approach this as a different kind of game, not as another turn-based RPG. The available descriptions establish the format, but do not support a judgment about how the combat feels in play.

Crew, ship, exploration, and minigames
The Goromaru and its crew put a pirate-management layer alongside the story. Recruitment and customization give players reasons to engage with the crew and vessel, while exploration and minigames provide the broader activity mix associated with the series. That combination is likely to matter most to readers who enjoy Like a Dragon for its side content as much as its central plot. The PlayStation listing calls it an “over-the-top, modern-day pirate adventure”; that is platform marketing language, not an independent review finding. PlayStation’s store listing describes the premise and features.
Is it a good fit for Majima and Like a Dragon fans?
The premise puts Majima at the center and gives him an amnesia mystery, a new companion in Noah, and a pirate crew to command. That makes the spin-off distinct from a standard ensemble-led mainline installment while keeping it attached to the series’ world and timeline. A GamesRadar+ editorial summary characterizes it as fan-service-heavy, while arguing that the crew system gives side activities new life and that emotional moments still land. That is one outlet’s view, not a consensus or a substitute for a full assessment of the game.

For players weighing the change in format, the key distinction is straightforward: this is an action-adventure with land and naval combat, not the turn-based RPG presentation associated with some recent mainline games. Its pirate systems and side activities are central attractions rather than incidental extras. Whether those ingredients make a satisfying spin-off is a matter of taste; the available descriptions and attributed assessment do not establish a universal verdict.
Can you play it without having played earlier Like a Dragon games?
The story is set after Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, so that is the most relevant prior game for timeline context. The official materials identify the placement and characters but do not establish how much earlier story knowledge is required to follow this adventure. Newcomers can understand the basic premise from the amnesia setup, but should expect some continuity with the series rather than treat the game as entirely detached.

What the available review evidence does—and does not—show
GamesRadar+’s editorial summary says the spin-off leans heavily on fan service, while highlighting its crew system and emotional core as strengths. That provides a useful perspective for readers who value side activities and character moments, but it is one outlet’s assessment. It does not establish platform performance, a technical comparison, or a universal recommendation.
SEGA reported 27.7 million standalone game sales worldwide across the franchise in its February 21, 2025 announcement; that is a series-wide figure, not sales of Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
