Liminal Industries is a Minecraft Java Edition modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Install it through CurseForge or Prism Launcher, launch the profile once, and use the matching server-pack release when connecting to a server. Hosting works best with a newly generated pack world, Java 17, fast single-thread CPU performance and enough RAM for exploration and automation.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
What Liminal Industries is—and which version to use
Liminal Industries turns the Backrooms into a survival-industrial progression game. Its project description is “Explore, conquer and industrialise the liminal backrooms with tech and magic.” Instead of beginning in a normal overworld with trees and exposed ore, you wake in a constrained room and build an industrial base by scavenging the environment, completing quests and reaching progressively more dangerous areas.

Those labels matter when you set up multiplayer: the client profile, server files and world should all correspond to the same pack release. A client on Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge with a different Liminal Industries build can fail to connect, report missing or extra mods, or load a world with mismatched progression data.

Compatibility: Java only, not Bedrock
Liminal Industries is a Forge modpack and runs only on Minecraft: Java Edition. It does not run natively on Minecraft Bedrock for Windows, consoles, phones or tablets. Bedrock players cannot join a normal Liminal Industries Forge server with the Bedrock client because the mod loader, mod files and world-generation systems are different.
Everyone joining the server needs the same Java Edition profile installed locally. A vanilla Java client is not enough, and installing Forge alone does not install the pack’s mods, quests or custom generation.
What you need before installing
- A legal installation of Minecraft Java Edition with a launcher that can create modded profiles.
- CurseForge App or Prism Launcher.
- The Liminal Industries profile for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Enough client memory for a large Forge pack. The exact allocation depends on your computer and the launcher; leave memory for the operating system rather than assigning all installed RAM to Minecraft.
- For multiplayer, the server address and confirmation of the server’s exact pack release.
Do not mix a client profile from one release with a server-pack archive from another. Ask the administrator for the version string shown in the server panel or server files before you troubleshoot connection errors.
Install Liminal Industries on your client
CurseForge App method
- Install and open the CurseForge App.
- Choose Minecraft, open the modpack browser and search for Liminal Industries.
- Select the profile that specifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, then install the latest available release that matches the server you intend to use.
- Start the profile once. The launcher downloads the listed mods and creates the instance’s configuration folders. The first launch can take longer than later launches while Forge initializes.
- Close the game normally after reaching the title screen or world-selection interface. This confirms that the instance was created before you attempt to join a remote server.
Prism Launcher method
- Open Prism Launcher and use its modpack import or browse function.
- Search for Liminal Industries and select the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile.
- Install the profile, accept the mod downloads and verify that the instance uses Java 17 if Prism asks you to select a runtime.
- Launch the instance once, then exit. Keep the profile unchanged until you have confirmed the server’s pack version.
The pack’s launcher-managed installation is preferable to manually copying random mod files. Manual additions can create duplicate mods, wrong versions or client-only/server-only mismatches that are difficult to diagnose.
Join a hosted Liminal Industries server
- Install the same Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge pack release used by the host.
- Launch the profile and open Multiplayer.
- Choose Add Server.
- Enter the address supplied by the administrator. For example, Lemony SMP documents
liminal.lemonysmp.comas its address. - Save the entry, select it and choose Join Server.
If the server appears online but rejects you, stop changing random settings and compare the three identifiers first: Minecraft version, Forge loader and Liminal Industries release. A server may also require a whitelist, a particular Java account or an administrator-provided resource-pack prompt.

Prepare a managed server correctly
A managed host can remove operating-system maintenance, but it does not remove pack-specific requirements. Use a host control panel that can install the exact Liminal Industries server-pack version, expose Forge and Java settings, provide file access and create backups.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Pack installation workflow
- Stop the server before changing the modpack version or replacing server files.
- In the control panel, select Liminal Industries and choose the release that matches your clients.
- Install or upload the corresponding server-pack archive. The server archive is not interchangeable with a client profile folder.
- Generate a new world for the installation.
- Start the server and wait for the first world-generation pass to finish before inviting players.
- Join with a client profile carrying the same Minecraft, Forge and pack versions.
A fresh world is strongly recommended because the pack depends on custom environment generation and progression. Moving the pack onto an ordinary vanilla world can leave players in the wrong environment, omit expected structures or disrupt the intended quest path. Do not reuse an established world unless you have a tested backup and the pack documentation explicitly says that migration is supported.
Self-host a Liminal Industries server on Linux
Space-Node’s documented sequence assumes a Linux shell, an extracted server-pack archive and permission to install Java:
mkdir liminal-server && cd liminal-server
unzip Liminal-Industries-Server-[VERSION].zip
sudo apt install openjdk-17-jre-headless -y
./run.sh nogui
Replace [VERSION] with the actual filename you downloaded. The brackets are a placeholder for the archive’s version and should not be typed literally unless that is how the file is named.
The Forge 1.20.1 server installer creates run.sh and user_jvm_args.txt. On the first run, read and accept the Minecraft EULA as required by the server software, then start the server again. Keep the server process in a terminal multiplexer or service manager so a disconnected SSH session does not stop it.

Java and JVM settings
The documented setup uses Java 17. Its example user_jvm_args.txt values are:
-Xms8G
-Xmx8G
-XX:+UseG1GC
-XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled
-XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200
-XX:+DisableExplicitGC
-XX:+AlwaysPreTouch
These are an example starting point, not a guarantee that every machine or player count will run at 20 ticks per second. Make sure your shell is actually using Java 17 by checking the runtime selected by the Forge launch script or your service configuration.
Do not copy the Java 21-only flag -XX:+ZGenerational into a Java 17 installation. The documented guide warns that this flag fails on Java 17. If you deliberately move to a different Java runtime, recheck Forge and pack compatibility instead of adding flags one at a time from unrelated optimization guides.
Server capacity by concurrent players
Space-Node publishes the following indicative targets. They are provider guidance rather than an official specification from the pack author. CPU figures refer to single-thread performance, which is important because world generation and many modded server tasks are not evenly distributed across all cores.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Concurrent players and stage | RAM | Single-thread CPU target | NVMe storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–4 players, early game | 6–8 GB | 3.8 GHz or faster | 40 GB |
| 5–10 players, mid-game factories | 8–10 GB | 4.0 GHz or faster | 60 GB |
| 10 or more players, late-game automation | 10–14 GB | 4.2 GHz or faster | 80 GB |
Player count alone is not a capacity plan. A quiet base with two players can be lighter than a factory complex with dozens of active machines, and an exploration party can generate more chunks than an established group standing in one area. Leave additional disk capacity for backups, logs and world growth rather than treating the table’s storage figure as a hard maximum.

Keep exploration and automation within safe limits
Liminal Industries combines custom Backrooms generation with machine-heavy automation. Exploring new territory keeps chunk generation active; factories add per-tick machine entities. The result is a CPU-sensitive workload in which extra cores do not automatically compensate for weak single-thread performance.
Recommended starting server properties
view-distance=8limits how far each player receives loaded chunks.simulation-distance=6limits the distance at which entities and machines continue ticking.max-tick-time=90000gives a slow generation tick more time before the watchdog stops the server.
These settings reduce load; they do not make an overloaded machine fast. A world border can also limit unbounded sprinting into unexplored areas, which reduces the amount of new terrain the server must generate and save. Apply a border deliberately after discussing the playable area with your group, because it changes where players can explore.
No hardware choice guarantees a constant 20 TPS. Generation rate, simulation distance, machine density, storage latency and the number of players exploring at once all influence tick time. Change one setting at a time and watch the server log and tick behavior after the change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow the opening progression works
Leave the starting room
The opening is intentionally unlike vanilla Minecraft. Players wake in a small, carpeted room. The early objective is to treat the room as a resource cache rather than waiting for a tree or ordinary ore vein.
- Punch chairs to obtain the first wood-like materials.
- Cut or remove carpet to expose concrete and open access to basic resources.
- Craft initial tools from what you can salvage.
- Use the quest book as the progression map rather than guessing which machine should come next.
Move from scavenging to industry
Progression moves from improvised tools into machines, automation and deeper Backrooms areas. HolyHosting describes the economy as scrap-based: furniture, fixtures and machinery are important sources of materials, so ordinary Minecraft assumptions about trees, caves and ore veins do not reliably apply.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
As you advance, the quest book points toward areas such as poolrooms and limbo. Exploration is dangerous, and the environment is part of the progression system rather than a decorative backdrop. Establish storage and a return route before carrying rare components into an unfamiliar level.
Use multiplayer roles deliberately
On a shared server, divide early work between scavenging, quest completion, storage and machine construction. This reduces duplicated trips into newly generated areas and lets one player remain near the base while others explore. Keep a written record of important coordinates and recovery routes because a death in an unfamiliar level can strand equipment far from the starting area.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“Incompatible version” or missing-mod errors
- Confirm the client says Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Confirm the loader is Forge, not Fabric or a vanilla profile.
- Compare the complete Liminal Industries release name with the server’s release, including any server-pack revision.
- Remove manually added or duplicated mods and reinstall the profile through the launcher if the file list has drifted.
The server loads a normal Minecraft world
Stop the server, back up anything you need and generate a new world through the host panel or server configuration. A standard world does not provide the pack’s intended environment and can make progression appear broken even when the mod files are present.
The server hangs during generation or the watchdog fires
- Lower
simulation-distance, using 6 as the documented starting value. - Keep
view-distanceat 8 while testing. - Raise
max-tick-timeto 90000 as documented. - Reduce simultaneous exploration and consider a world border.
- Check whether the machine-heavy area is loading too many active entities or automation blocks.
Do not assume that increasing RAM fixes a CPU-bound generation stall. If the log shows Java startup failure, check the runtime first and remove Java 21-only flags from a Java 17 setup.
A player falls into an empty or void-like area
Lemony SMP’s recovery suggestion is /kill after joining. This drops the player’s carried items, so it is appropriate mainly for a new character or an emergency recovery agreed with the administrator. For an established player, an administrator should teleport the character to a safe location when possible, preserving inventory and avoiding an unnecessary loss.
Players can connect but experience severe lag
- Check whether several players are generating new chunks at once.
- Move automation away from the spawn area if the base contains many active machines.
- Review simulation distance before reducing visual view distance further.
- Check NVMe free space and backup jobs for storage contention.
- Compare actual CPU performance with the single-thread targets rather than looking only at total core count.
Managed hosting or self-hosting?
| Decision factor | Managed hosting | Self-hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Panel-based pack selection and server-file deployment | You download, extract and maintain the server archive and Forge files |
| Java and Forge control | Depends on the provider’s available runtime and panel controls | You choose Java 17 and control the Forge launch configuration |
| Performance | Depends on the allocated single-thread CPU, RAM and NVMe tier | Depends on your own hardware, network and operating-system tuning |
| Backups and file access | Look for automated backups, restore points and accessible configuration files | You must schedule, verify and store backups yourself |
| Network latency | Choose a region near most players | Your upload connection and location determine latency |
| World creation | Prefer a panel with an explicit fresh-world workflow | Create and verify the pack world before inviting players |
Choose managed hosting when you value a control panel, remote uptime and simpler backups. Choose self-hosting when you can administer Linux, monitor a long-running process and maintain off-machine backups. In either case, verify exact server-pack support before paying or migrating a world.

- Every player has Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock.
- Every client uses Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Every client and the server use the same Liminal Industries release.
- The server uses the matching server-pack archive.
- Java 17 is selected for the documented Forge 1.20.1 setup.
- A new pack world has been generated and tested.
view-distance=8,simulation-distance=6andmax-tick-time=90000have been considered as starting settings.- Backups include the world, configuration files and player data, and at least one backup is stored away from the server.
- Players know the server address, whitelist policy and a safe recovery procedure.
Bottom line
Liminal Industries is best treated as a version-locked, Java-only Forge experience rather than a plug-and-play vanilla world. Install the 1.20.1 Forge profile, match the server-pack release exactly, generate a fresh world and plan capacity around chunk generation and factory tick load. Java 17, fast single-thread CPU performance, NVMe storage and conservative distance settings provide a sound starting point; careful world management and backups matter just as much as the headline RAM number.
