Lingering Shadow, a psychological-horror puzzle game set in a small Chinese town during the 2000s, now has a free playable demo on Steam. The demo launched on October 16, 2026, alongside confirmation that the game will appear in the October edition of Steam Next Fest. The complete game remains listed as Coming soon and has no announced release date.
What is Lingering Shadow?
Lingering Shadow follows Lanlan, a young woman who returns to her hometown on her birthday and discovers that her father has disappeared. She searches familiar streets and buildings, follows clues, and reconstructs fragmented memories while trying to understand what happened. The investigation eventually points toward a dark truth buried beneath the town’s ordinary surface.

The setting is deliberately intimate: a small Chinese town in the early 2000s rather than a huge contemporary city or an isolated haunted mansion. Everyday locations, period details and half-remembered routines establish a sense of warmth and familiarity before the environment begins to feel wrong.

Dreamcore nostalgia instead of constant jump scares
The game’s stated style is a “Dreamcore early-2000 atmosphere” that is nostalgic, warm and quietly wrong. Fear comes from subtle distortion, uncanny changes in familiar places and the uncertainty of Lanlan’s memories, rather than relying primarily on cheap jump scares.

A world split between the ordinary and the surreal
Steam’s description says that familiar streets can warp as Lanlan moves between an everyday world and a surreal counterpart. That contrast supports the central mystery: the player must decide which details are reliable, what the town is concealing and how the two versions of the setting relate to Lanlan’s past.
Environmental storytelling
Clues are embedded in the spaces Lanlan explores. Objects, visual changes and the condition of familiar locations help communicate the story, so observation matters as much as direct exposition. The result is an investigation built around atmosphere, memory and interpretation.
Gameplay features listed for the demo and full game
- Single-player exploration: Lingering Shadow is designed as a solo narrative investigation.
- Puzzle solving: The store listing describes intuitive puzzles that connect exploration with the unfolding mystery.
- Multiple endings: Two distinct endings are described, shaped by the player’s final decision.
- 2D hand-drawn presentation: The environments and characters use a delicate illustrated style rather than conventional 3D realism.
- Custom volume controls: Steam lists separate audio-volume customization, useful for balancing atmosphere, effects and dialogue.
Steam categorizes the game with Adventure, Indie, RPG, Psychological Horror, Puzzle, Mystery, Exploration, Atmospheric, Multiple Endings, 2D, Hand-drawn and Single-player tags. Those labels indicate a compact, story-led adventure rather than an action-focused survival-horror game.

Lingering Shadow is best understood as a psychological-horror mystery adventure with puzzle-solving and exploration at its core. Its defining combination is a 2000s small-town setting, 2D hand-drawn art, dreamlike environmental shifts and a final choice that leads to different endings. Players looking for combat-heavy survival horror should note that the published feature description emphasizes investigation, puzzles and atmosphere instead.
The game’s strongest hook is the tension between nostalgia and distrust: streets that should feel safe become subtly unfamiliar, while Lanlan’s search for her father forces the player to question both the environment and the memories attached to it.
