If a YouTube playlist stops when your computer sleeps, prevent the computer from sleeping during playback. You can still let the display turn off: screen-off and system sleep are separate settings. Also check YouTube’s Sleep Timer, which can pause playback even while the computer stays awake.
“Stream” can mean watching a playlist in YouTube or sending a live broadcast from an encoder on your computer. The first steps below cover both; the encoder-specific guidance applies only if you are producing a broadcast.
First identify what is stopping
- You are watching: A playlist is playing in a browser, and playback pauses or stops when the computer becomes idle. Check the computer’s sleep settings and YouTube’s player timer.
- You are broadcasting: Encoder software on your computer is sending a live feed to YouTube. The computer must stay awake and connected so the encoder can continue sending it.
Notice whether the interruption happens when the display goes dark or when the whole computer sleeps. A display turning off by itself does not mean the computer has gone to sleep.
Change the computer’s sleep settings
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. This is Microsoft’s documented path for Windows 11 power and sleep settings (Microsoft Support: Power settings in Windows 11).
- Under the power condition you are using, change Make my device sleep after to a longer interval or Never for the duration of the session.
- If you want the display to turn off, set Turn my screen off after separately. The computer can remain awake with the screen off.
- Check both the on-battery and plugged-in values. A laptop may use different timers for each, and available options can vary by device or policy.
For a long session, preventing sleep is more dependable than expecting browser playback to continue after the PC sleeps. Battery Saver and Windows’ sleep-related network behavior can affect background activity and connectivity; changing a network setting is not a substitute for keeping the computer awake (Microsoft Support: Battery saving tips for Windows).

macOS
- On a Mac laptop, open System Settings > Battery and inspect the options for the power state you are using.
- When connected to a power adapter, look for Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, if that option is available on your Mac and macOS version.
- On a desktop Mac, check the sleep and wake controls in Energy settings.
Apple notes that delaying or preventing sleep can increase power use. Names and availability of settings vary by Mac model and macOS release, so check the closest matching control for your system (Apple Support: Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac). For a long session, use the setting while plugged in, then restore your usual sleep behavior if appropriate.
Check YouTube’s Sleep Timer
If playback stops after a predictable interval while the computer remains awake, check YouTube’s own timer. In the desktop player, open the video, click Settings, choose Sleep Timer, and adjust or disable the timer. It pauses the video independently of your computer’s sleep settings (YouTube Help: Set a sleep timer).

If you are sending a live broadcast from an encoder
YouTube supports live streaming by mobile, webcam, or encoder. An encoder may be software running on the same computer that produces the stream. YouTube’s setup connects the encoder to the live stream using a stream URL and key, and its guidance recommends monitoring the stream (YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips; YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
If that computer sleeps, the software encoder cannot keep sending its feed as if the host were still active. Keep the computer awake and its network connection active for the broadcast, and monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health. This follows from the encoder workflow; YouTube’s cited setup pages do not specify a universal sleep rule for every encoder or configuration.

A standalone hardware encoder is a different production arrangement, not a fix for ordinary playlist playback. Consider one only if you have a production reason to separate encoding from your computer.
Troubleshoot in this order
- Confirm what you are doing: watching a playlist or sending a broadcast from encoder software.
- Check the display and sleep separately: if the screen goes black, see whether the computer itself has entered sleep.
- Check the active power setting: confirm the sleep timeout for battery or plugged-in use, as applicable.
- Check YouTube’s Sleep Timer: look for a timer if playback pauses while the computer stays awake.
- For a creator broadcast, inspect the encoder and connection: if viewers on different connections report the same problem, YouTube recommends checking stream health and the encoder or outbound connection.
- If the computer is awake and playback still stops, investigate browser, network, or service-specific causes separately. The platform guidance above does not establish a single cause for those cases.
A report that a playlist stopped with an “Are you still watching?” message is anecdotal; it does not establish that all playlists stop for this reason. Likewise, official Windows, Apple, and YouTube guidance cited here does not give a statistic for how often sleep causes playback or encoder interruptions.
