Short answer: neither Linode (now Akamai Cloud) nor AWS Lightsail can be named the cheaper or more reliable choice for an equivalent India-based 24/7 YouTube stream from the published figures available here. Akamai identifies Chennai and Mumbai as India-focused core sites; AWS Lightsail bundles include compute, storage, and a transfer allowance that varies by region. Compare the exact India-region terms and test the route from your instance to YouTube before choosing.
What matters for a 24/7 stream
A cloud instance must run your video source and encoder continuously, keep a stable outbound connection to YouTube, and have enough included transfer for the stream’s bitrate. The monthly headline price alone does not settle the choice: instance resources, region-specific availability and pricing, transfer limits, overage terms, and your restart plan all matter.
There is no measured head-to-head benchmark or India-to-YouTube latency test establishing that either provider performs better. Provider location guidance is useful for narrowing the region, but it is not a substitute for testing the actual stream path.

How to interpret the plan figures
The published examples make a useful first screen, not a final cost verdict. The two 4 GB rows both show $24/month and 4 TB of transfer, but the sources do not establish that the regions, resources, performance, or regional billing terms are equivalent. Do not infer that one provider is cheaper for an India deployment from those rows alone.

Estimate monthly stream traffic
Plan transfer from the stream’s actual bitrate. A continuous 1 Mbps stream sends about 0.324 TB (decimal) over 30 days before protocol overhead; that is calculated from bitrate multiplied by 2,592,000 seconds and divided by eight. At 5 Mbps, the corresponding estimate is about 1.62 TB before overhead. Compare your estimate with the applicable outbound allowance, then verify whether the provider counts traffic to YouTube against it and what overage costs.
- Include protocol overhead and leave some margin rather than planning to consume the entire allowance.
- Check the exact regional plan, included transfer, and overage policy immediately before deploying; these terms can change.
- Remember that transfer allowances and pricing shown for a provider’s region or plan table do not automatically prove the terms of a different India region.
Choose an India region and test the YouTube route
- Pick a candidate region. If the stream is operated from India, Akamai’s Chennai and Mumbai sites are documented India-focused options. Consider your stream source and operational needs; physical proximity alone does not establish the best route. For wider Asia-Pacific work connecting to Akamai core sites outside India, Akamai recommends Singapore or Sydney.
- Confirm current instance terms. In each provider’s current pricing or console flow, check instance availability, price, vCPU, RAM, storage, transfer allowance, and overage rules for the exact region. Match resources as closely as possible before comparing costs.
- Measure the outbound path. Test throughput and reliability from the selected VM to YouTube’s ingest service under realistic conditions. Do not treat a provider’s regional location claim as a route measurement.

Set encoder output for YouTube
For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency, and RTMPS where supported. Select settings for the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to stream, rather than increasing bitrate without checking both host capacity and transfer cost. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom: the stream’s total bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. Check outbound throughput and network reliability, then watch stream health during the test. YouTube streaming tips
Keep the stream recoverable
A VM can lose its process or network connection even when the provider’s control plane is available. Plan how the encoder will restart after a process crash or host reboot, where logs will be kept, and how you will detect a failed stream. Test a restart and decide whether you need a backup source or manual recovery procedure. Neither provider’s comparative recovery behavior or uptime is established by the published figures above.

Before leaving it unattended
- Confirm that the stream starts successfully after a reboot.
- Verify that logs make encoder errors and restarts diagnosable.
- Know how you will detect a dropped YouTube connection and restore the stream.
- Keep a tested recovery path for host, process, or network interruptions.
Which should you choose?
Choose Akamai Cloud (Linode) if its Chennai or Mumbai location suits your deployment and the exact regional instance and transfer terms work for your budget. Choose Lightsail if its bundle format and the current availability and terms in your selected region fit your needs. In either case, decide using matched resources, verified outbound transfer terms, and a test of the real VM-to-YouTube route—not an assumed latency or uptime advantage.
