Short answer: A spare Windows PC is a sensible starting point if it can encode your actual OBS stream and your home internet can reliably upload it. A Windows VPS can move the work off your computer and home connection, but only if the specific plan provides Windows, enough sustained encoding capacity, and suitable upload capacity at a worthwhile total cost. Neither option comes with a general guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
What actually determines whether a 24/7 stream stays live?
Both setups have to encode your video, send it to YouTube, and keep their required equipment and network path available. The difference is where that work happens: OBS on your spare PC uses your local hardware and home connection; OBS on a Windows VPS uses a remote server and the provider’s network.
That makes the decision less about “PC or cloud” in the abstract and more about five checks: whether the encoder can sustain the workload, whether the upload path is dependable, what the VPS plan really provides, what each option costs in total, and how much maintenance you are willing to handle.

Can a spare PC run OBS all day?
It can, if it handles the real workload continuously and the home connection can sustain the stream. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements. But OBS cautions that meeting basic requirements does not establish that a system can stream: performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the encoder as well as the minimum requirements
OBS supports hardware encoding through NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, subject to compatible hardware and drivers. Hardware encoding generally shifts work from the CPU to a specialized component and can reduce the performance impact. Account for everything that must stay available
A local setup relies on the computer, its power, and your home internet connection. If any of these is interrupted, the stream may be affected. Consider whether the PC can run unattended, whether it is kept cool and maintained, and whether your power and connection arrangements suit continuous operation. There is no universal uptime figure for a spare-PC setup.

Can you use a Windows VPS to stream to YouTube 24/7?
Potentially, if the VPS plan is genuinely suitable for continuous video encoding and streaming. A VPS can move the workload off your personal computer and use a remote network connection, but “Windows VPS” alone does not tell you whether the machine can encode your scene or sustain the required upload.
Verify the plan before subscribing
- Confirm that the plan supports the Windows version and remote administration you need.
- Ask what sustained CPU or GPU encoding capacity is available. Do not treat a generic virtual CPU as equivalent to a hardware encoder.
- Check sustained network upload capacity, whether YouTube ingest is reachable, and any data-transfer or traffic limits.
- Include Windows licensing and any bandwidth, traffic, or GPU charges in the total cost.
- Find out how the provider handles outages and recovery; do not infer an uptime or recovery guarantee unless the plan documentation states one.

What upload speed does a 24/7 YouTube livestream need?
YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can reliably support, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health during the event. For H.264, YouTube’s published encoder settings recommend 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 6 Mbps at 1080p60, 7 Mbps at 1440p30, and 8 Mbps at 1440p60. These are encoder bitrate recommendations, not proof that an internet plan advertising the same upload speed will stream reliably. Use the YouTube live encoder settings as a starting point, then test the actual connection and stream.
Use the right output settings
- Bitrate: Choose an H.264 bitrate appropriate for the target resolution and frame rate, then test whether the upload path sustains it.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR for live encoder bitrate.
- Ingest: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for live ingest.
- Quality: Select a stream quality your connection can reliably support rather than choosing settings based only on the maximum your encoder offers.
The same test principle applies whether OBS runs on a home PC or a VPS: check the stream at the chosen settings and monitor YouTube’s stream health.

How to choose between them
- Define the stream. Write down the resolution, frame rate, OBS scene complexity, and encoder you intend to use.
- Assess the spare PC. Check OBS’s Windows requirements and identify any available supported hardware encoder. Then run a realistic test stream; minimum compatibility is not proof of sustained performance.
- Test the home upload. Test at your intended settings and observe YouTube stream health. Treat YouTube’s bitrate recommendations as a starting point, not a substitute for a test.
- Assess the VPS. Get current plan details for Windows support, sustained encoding capability, upload, traffic terms, and total cost. Verify recovery arrangements rather than assuming them.
- Choose on workload and operating effort. Use whichever option meets your real stream requirements at an acceptable cost and maintenance burden. Neither architecture by itself guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

Common problems and what to check
OBS reports encoding overload or the stream stutters
The selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene may exceed what the machine can sustain. Test the actual OBS workload, check whether a supported hardware encoder is available, and reduce output demands if needed.
YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection
The upload path may not reliably sustain the selected bitrate. Test the connection at the intended settings, choose a quality it can reliably support, and monitor YouTube stream health. For a VPS, check sustained upload and traffic terms with the provider.
The VPS plan looks powerful but encoding is still a concern
Virtual CPU specifications do not establish access to a suitable GPU encoder or prove sustained encoding performance. Ask the provider about the actual encoding resources available to your plan and test before relying on it.
The stream stops after a local power or internet interruption
A spare-PC arrangement depends on home power and connectivity as well as the computer. Review which component failed and whether your setup needs backup power or a different connection; no configuration can be assumed to have a universal uptime guarantee.
The VPS costs more than its headline rate suggests
Recalculate using the full recurring cost, including Windows licensing, bandwidth or traffic, and any GPU charges. Confirm current terms with the provider before comparing that total with the incremental cost of using local equipment.
