Linux Process Management: ps, top, kill and systemd Basics

A practical guide to Linux process management: inspect snapshots with ps, monitor live behavior with top, stop standalone programs with kill, and control systemd services through systemctl.

Use ps for a reliable snapshot, top for a live view, kill to send a deliberate signal to a process, and systemctl when that process belongs to a systemd-managed service. The safest workflow is observe first, identify the owner and parent, choose the least disruptive action, then verify the result.

This distinction matters on a gaming PC or Linux game server: terminating the wrong process can lose unsaved settings, while killing only a service’s main process can leave helper processes behind or trigger an automatic restart. The commands below build a repeatable way to inspect and control processes.

The four tools at a glance

Linux process management becomes easier when each command has a clearly defined job. The Linux man-pages project describes ps as reporting “a snapshot of the current processes.” top presents a “dynamic real-time view” of running tasks. The kill command sends a chosen signal to processes or process groups; it is not an unconditional delete operation. On systems using systemd, systemd is the service manager and systemctl is the interface for inspecting and controlling it.

Tool Time view What it targets Best use What it does not do
ps One snapshot Selected processes, users, terminals or command names Stable listings, filtering, recording a PID and collecting evidence It does not continuously refresh
top Interactive, continuously updating view Running tasks, system load, CPU and memory activity Finding a process that is changing behavior over time It is not a service lifecycle manager
kill One control action A PID or process group Requesting normal termination or, as a last resort, forcing it It does not know why a process exists or how it should be restarted
systemctl Current unit state plus control operations A systemd unit and its managed processes Stopping, restarting and inspecting services with dependency and restart context It does not manage arbitrary programs that were launched outside systemd

A safe investigation workflow

Use this sequence whenever a game, launcher, voice client, or dedicated server appears frozen or consumes unusual resources.

  1. Take a stable snapshot. Run ps -ef to list processes, or focus on one candidate with ps -p PID -o pid, ppid, user, stat, pcpu, pmem, cmd. Replace PID with the numeric process ID.
  2. Watch changing behavior. Run top and observe CPU, memory and process state for several refreshes. Sort by CPU or memory and narrow the display to a PID when the relevant controls are available in your implementation.
  3. Confirm identity and ownership. Check the command line, user, parent process ID (PPID), and whether the program is a child of a launcher, shell, container or service.
  4. Choose the control boundary. A standalone program is usually handled with kill. A program launched by systemd should normally be stopped or restarted through its unit with systemctl.
  5. Request a normal exit first. Send TERM, either explicitly with kill -TERM PID or by using the default kill PID.
  6. Verify. Re-run the focused ps command, watch top, or check systemctl status unit. Do not assume that a command succeeded merely because it printed no error.

Using ps for repeatable process listings

Read a complete snapshot

ps -ef is a practical first view on systems providing the procps implementation. It displays every process in a full-format listing, including the owning user, PID, PPID, start information and command. Because the output is a point-in-time snapshot, it is suitable for copying into a support report or comparing before and after a change.

Inspect one process with useful columns

For a suspected game process, use:

ps -p PID -o pid,ppid,user,stat,pcpu,pmem,cmd

The fields answer different questions:

  • pid identifies the process you would signal.
  • ppid identifies its parent, which may reveal a launcher or supervisor.
  • user tells you which account owns it and whether elevated privileges will be needed.
  • stat shows the process state and additional flags; a state that remains unchanged can indicate why a process is not responding.
  • pcpu and pmem show the CPU and memory percentages reported by ps at the time of the snapshot.
  • cmd provides the command line, helping distinguish two processes with similar names.

Use selection carefully

Do not identify a process solely by a short name such as “server” or “game.” Multiple users and several instances can have the same executable name. Combine the command line with the owner, PID and PPID. If you need to act on several related processes, first determine whether they form a process group or are all members of a systemd unit; guessing from adjacent PIDs is unsafe.

Using top to watch live behavior

What the display tells you

Start top with no arguments. Its summary area reports system-wide load and resource information, while the task area refreshes process rows. A single high CPU sample can be normal during shader compilation or asset decompression; watch the trend for several updates before deciding that a process is runaway. Memory pressure should likewise be judged alongside the total available memory and the behavior of other processes.

Useful interactive controls

The exact keys can vary slightly between implementations, but procps top commonly supports these controls:

  • 1 expands per-CPU statistics, useful when one core is saturated while overall usage looks modest.
  • k prompts for a PID and signal, allowing a signal to be sent from the monitor.
  • r prompts for a PID and a new scheduling priority; changing priority affects scheduling and is not a substitute for stopping a broken program.
  • q exits the monitor.

When you find a candidate in top, record its PID and confirm the command with ps before sending a signal. A live display is excellent for discovering behavior but is less convenient than a tailored ps command for documenting exactly what was running.

Stopping a standalone process with kill

TERM is a request, not an executioner

The manual definition is precise: “The command kill sends the specified signal to the specified processes or process groups.” With no signal specified, kill sends TERM. TERM asks the program to terminate normally, giving it an opportunity to close files, save state and release resources. For a game or server, this is the appropriate first attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use either form:

kill PID
kill -TERM PID

A successful command means the signal was delivered to the requested target; it does not guarantee that the process has already exited. Recheck with ps -p PID or observe the PID in top.

Escalate only when necessary

If a process remains after a reasonable wait and you have confirmed that the PID is correct, a stronger signal may be justified:

kill -KILL PID

KILL cannot be caught or handled by the target. The program receives no chance to flush data or perform cleanup, so unsaved game progress, server state or temporary files may be lost. Treat it as recovery for an unresponsive process, not as the routine way to close software. If TERM works, there is no benefit in sending KILL afterward.

Other signals you may encounter

  • INT is commonly associated with an interrupt, similar to pressing Ctrl+C in a terminal.
  • HUP traditionally indicates a terminal hangup; some daemons use it to request a configuration reload, but the program’s own documentation determines whether that behavior exists.
  • TERM is the normal shutdown request.
  • KILL is the non-negotiable final signal.

Signal numbers are less readable than names, so prefer names in scripts and runbooks. If you do use a number, verify which signal it represents on the target system rather than assuming every platform uses an identical numbering scheme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Process groups require extra caution

A negative PID can address a process group, for example kill -- -PGID. This can be useful when a terminal-launched game and its helper processes belong to one group, but it also broadens the blast radius. Confirm the process-group ID and membership before using it. Never substitute a guessed negative number for a verified PGID.

Recognizing when systemd is responsible

“systemd is a system and service manager for Linux operating systems,” according to its manual. When it runs as PID 1, it brings up and maintains userspace services. It represents services and other resources as units with dependencies and states. A dedicated game server started at boot, a matchmaking daemon, or a monitoring process may therefore be a unit rather than an independent terminal job.

Ownership matters because systemd can restart a process after you kill it, track its child processes in a control group, impose ordering dependencies, and record a unit-level failure. Killing only one PID can leave the unit active, cause an automatic restart, or produce a misleading diagnosis.

Inspecting and controlling a service with systemctl

Inspect before changing anything

The systemctl manual says it “may be used to introspect and control the state of the systemd system and service manager.” Start with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

systemctl status unit.service

Replace unit.service with the actual unit name. The status view reports whether the unit is active, inactive, failed, starting or stopping, and normally shows the main PID and recent service information. This context is more useful than a bare PID when diagnosing a server that repeatedly exits.

Use lifecycle operations for managed services

  1. Stop normally: systemctl stop unit.service. This asks the service manager to stop the unit and its managed processes according to the unit’s rules.
  2. Restart after a change or transient fault: systemctl restart unit.service. A restart is a stop followed by a start from systemd’s perspective; verify that the new instance reaches the expected active state.
  3. Check the result: systemctl status unit.service, then corroborate the actual process with ps if needed.

Stopping a unit is not the same as disabling its boot-time enablement. If it is configured to start during boot or as a dependency, it may return after a reboot or when its dependency is activated. Change enablement only when you intend to alter startup policy, and treat that as a separate administrative decision.

Target a unit’s processes with systemctl kill

When a service is wedged and a normal stop does not work, systemd can send a signal within the unit’s control group:

systemctl kill --kill-who=main --signal=TERM unit.service

The --kill-who selection can target the main process, control processes, the unit’s cgroup, or all of those categories, depending on the scope you choose. Use the narrowest scope that matches the problem. For example, targeting the main process avoids unnecessarily terminating a helper, while targeting the cgroup is appropriate when every process belonging to the service must be stopped. If you escalate to KILL, make the signal explicit and understand that cleanup will be skipped.

Choosing between kill and systemctl

Situation Preferred action Reason
A game launched from a shell is frozen Inspect with ps, then kill PID There is no service lifecycle to preserve.
A process is consuming CPU while you diagnose it Use top, then confirm with ps Live observation separates a sustained problem from a short workload spike.
A dedicated server is a systemd unit systemctl status, then systemctl stop or restart The manager knows the unit’s dependencies, cgroup and restart policy.
A service’s main process is stuck but the unit remains present Use systemctl kill with an explicit scope and signal You can control the unit’s main, control, cgroup or all processes deliberately.
A process ignores TERM Verify the PID or unit again, then consider KILL Forceful termination carries data-loss and cleanup risks.

Common gaming and server scenarios

A launcher closed, but the game process remains

Run ps -ef and inspect the command line and PPID. If the process belongs to your user and is not a service, send TERM to that exact PID. Check for child processes before assuming the entire game has exited. If a launcher normally supervises the game, closing the launcher may not terminate every child; identify each remaining process rather than killing unrelated programs with a broad name match.

A dedicated server keeps returning after you kill it

Look for a unit with systemctl status unit.service. If systemd owns it, use systemctl stop to request a unit-level shutdown. A configured restart policy can bring the service back after a crash or failure, so inspect the unit status and logs available through your normal systemd administration tools instead of repeatedly killing individual PIDs.

One process uses a full CPU core

Confirm the pattern in top, then capture a stable row with ps -p PID -o pid, ppid, user, stat, pcpu, pmem, cmd. High usage can be legitimate during compilation, decompression or simulation. If it is genuinely stuck, TERM is safer than immediately using KILL. If it is a service, restart the unit so systemd records and manages the event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A process is present but will not disappear

Check its stat value and parent. A zombie has already exited and is waiting for its parent to collect its status; sending signals to the zombie itself cannot make it run. The remedy is to address the parent process or its lifecycle. A process blocked in an uninterruptible kernel operation may also fail to respond until the underlying I/O condition clears; KILL is not a guarantee of immediate removal in every kernel state.

Permissions, safety and verification

  • You can normally signal only processes you own. Signaling another user’s process or a system service may require root privileges and should be deliberate.
  • Copy the PID directly from a verified listing. PIDs are reused after a process exits, so do not save a PID for later and assume it still identifies the same program.
  • Read the complete command line and owner before acting. Similar names are common on multi-user systems and game servers.
  • Prefer a unit operation for a unit-managed process. A manual kill can bypass the service manager’s intended shutdown and restart behavior.
  • After every action, verify with the same observation tool that established the problem: ps for a stable result, top for continuing behavior, or systemctl status for unit state.

A compact command checklist

Keep this sequence handy when troubleshooting:

  1. ps -ef — list a snapshot of all visible processes.
  2. ps -p PID -o pid,ppid,user,stat,pcpu,pmem,cmd — inspect one process.
  3. top — watch changing CPU, memory and task state.
  4. kill PID — request normal termination with TERM.
  5. kill -KILL PID — force termination only after verification and failed normal shutdown.
  6. systemctl status unit.service — inspect a systemd unit and its main process.
  7. systemctl stop unit.service or systemctl restart unit.service — use the service lifecycle instead of targeting a bare PID.
  8. systemctl kill --kill-who=main --signal=TERM unit.service — send an explicit signal to a chosen unit scope when ordinary stopping is insufficient.
