For an orderly, immediate power-off, run sudo shutdown now. To reboot instead, use sudo shutdown -r now. These commands notify users when appropriate and give the operating system a chance to stop services, flush data, unmount filesystems, disable swap and terminate processes cleanly.

The Linux shutdown(8) interface accepts now for an immediate action, +m for a delay in minutes, or hh:mm for a 24-hour clock time. A quoted message is optional, but is valuable on a shared host.
What the Linux shutdown command does
shutdown is the coordination-oriented interface for taking a machine down. It can request a halt, a poweroff or a reboot, and it can send a wall message to logged-in users before the operation begins. Unlike simply cutting power, a normal shutdown gives services and the filesystem a controlled end state.

On a system using systemd, the command schedules the corresponding systemd operation. The exact low-level implementation differs on non-systemd or legacy distributions, so verify the local manual page if a command behaves unexpectedly. The syntax above is the standard form documented by Linux man-pages.
Choose poweroff, reboot or halt
Power off a server completely
Use sudo shutdown now for the usual immediate poweroff request. sudo systemctl poweroff is the direct systemd equivalent. Poweroff tells the operating system to finish shutdown and ask the hardware or virtual-machine platform to remove power.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Restart the operating system
Use sudo shutdown -r now or sudo systemctl reboot when the host must come back without a manual power-on. A reboot still performs the normal service and filesystem cleanup before starting the boot process again.
Halt the operating system without removing power
halt is intentionally different from poweroff under systemd. A halt stops the operating-system kernel but leaves the hardware powered on. On a physical server, that can leave fans, management controllers or other hardware running; on a virtual machine, the provider may keep the guest allocated. If the requirement is “turn the server off,” choose poweroff, not halt.

Safe shutdown procedure over SSH or a console
A correct command can still be dangerous if it is issued on the wrong host or while a critical write is in progress. Follow this sequence for production servers.
- Confirm the target. Check the hostname, IP address, cloud or datacenter console and environment label. An SSH prompt can look identical on a staging and production machine. If practical, run
hostnameand inspect the address before proceeding. - Confirm the maintenance window and outcome. Decide whether the host must power off or return after a reboot. Record the intended time in the change ticket or incident channel.
- Notify users and owners. On a shared machine, use a delayed shutdown with a clear message, for example
sudo shutdown +10 "Server reboots in ten minutes for kernel maintenance". Coordinate separately with the owners of databases, queues, storage and other stateful services. - Stop or verify workloads. Follow each service owner’s procedure. A shutdown will ask service managers to stop units, but it does not replace application-level steps such as pausing replication, draining a queue or putting a cluster member into maintenance mode.
- Run the normal shutdown path. Use
sudo shutdown now, sudo shutdown -r now, sudo systemctl powerofforsudo systemctl reboot, depending on the desired result. - Watch the session and monitoring. An SSH connection normally closes as the network service stops. Confirm completion from an out-of-band console, hypervisor status, monitoring system or a subsequent login rather than repeatedly issuing commands.
Scheduling a shutdown and warning users
Delay by a number of minutes
Use a plus sign followed by minutes: sudo shutdown +5 "Maintenance starts in five minutes". The message is broadcast to logged-in users. Replace 5 with the required delay; the command accepts a minute-based delay rather than a duration such as “5h.”
Recommended Free Tools
Schedule a clock time
Use a 24-hour clock value: sudo shutdown 23:00 "Nightly maintenance". The time is interpreted by the host’s local clock, so check the server’s timezone when coordinating across regions. A clock-time schedule is not the same as a five-hour delay: daylight-saving rules, timezone configuration and the current date can affect when the host reaches the requested time.
Schedule a reboot instead of poweroff
Add -r to the scheduled form, for example sudo shutdown -r +15 "Reboot in fifteen minutes". The same warning and cancellation behavior applies.

Cancel a pending request
Run sudo shutdown -c from an authorized shell. Include a separate message if your local implementation supports it, but do not assume cancellation will undo an operation that has already entered its final shutdown phase. After canceling, check the terminal output and system logs, then notify users that the maintenance plan changed.
What systemd does during an orderly shutdown
When you invoke systemctl poweroff, systemctl reboot or a systemd-backed shutdown, systemd enqueues the appropriate target rather than asking you to execute an internal shutdown unit directly. Its shutdown sequence attempts to:
- Stop remaining services and processes in dependency order.
- Unmount remaining filesystems, or remount them read-only when unmounting is not possible.
- Disable remaining swap devices.
- Detach remaining storage devices.
- Kill processes that are still running before the final poweroff, halt, reboot or kexec action.
The shutdown service units are implementation details; systemd documentation advises triggering the operation with a command such as systemctl poweroff, not starting those units directly. Allowing this sequence to complete reduces the chance of unwritten data, dirty filesystems and partially stopped services.
Force options: when they are justified and why they are risky
Forceful shutdown options are recovery tools, not a faster normal procedure. Depending on the command and implementation, one force level can skip the orderly service shutdown, while repeated force use can also avoid process termination and filesystem unmounting. That can cause data loss, journal replay on the next boot, corrupted application state or a cluster node that requires manual repair.

Before forcing an operation, try to identify the blocker: a service waiting indefinitely, a hung network filesystem, a storage device that will not detach or a kernel-level fault. Use the provider’s console or a local terminal when SSH is unreliable. If you must force poweroff, record the reason, preserve relevant logs and plan a filesystem and application consistency check at the next boot. Never use a force option merely because a normal shutdown takes longer than expected.

“Permission denied” or an authorization prompt
Shutdown normally requires administrative privileges. Prefix the command with sudo and authenticate with an account allowed by the local sudo policy. If sudo is unavailable, an administrator must grant the required privilege; do not switch to an unapproved shared root credential.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe command says a shutdown is already scheduled
Inspect the warning and determine whether another operator owns the maintenance. If it is yours to remove, run sudo shutdown -c. If a new schedule is needed, cancel the old one first and then issue the replacement with a message explaining the revised time.
Users did not see the warning
Wall messages reach users who are logged in through supported terminals at the time of broadcast. They will not reach disconnected sessions, external notification systems or people who were never logged in. Use your normal incident or maintenance channel as a second notification path.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
SSH disconnected and you cannot tell whether the host rebooted
Disconnection is expected when networking stops. Check the host through an out-of-band console, virtualization dashboard or monitoring probe. Wait for the normal boot interval before attempting a new connection; repeatedly launching SSH sessions can obscure whether the machine is still shutting down.
The machine halted but did not turn off
If halt or a compatibility command was used, the result may be an OS halt with hardware still powered. Use sudo systemctl poweroff when actual power removal is required, subject to the platform’s support for virtual power operations.

A service refuses to stop
Do not jump immediately to a force option. Review the service manager status and logs, follow the service’s documented stop procedure and check for blocked mounts or storage paths. Once the underlying blocker is resolved, rerun the normal shutdown command.
Decision guide
- Need an immediate complete poweroff:
sudo shutdown noworsudo systemctl poweroff. - Need an immediate reboot:
sudo shutdown -r noworsudo systemctl reboot. - Need to warn a shared host’s users: use
shutdown +m "message"or a clock-time schedule. - Need to withdraw a scheduled action:
sudo shutdown -c, provided the final shutdown phase has not begun. - Need the OS stopped while hardware stays on: use a halt operation only when that distinction is intentional.
- Facing a stuck system: investigate the blocker first; reserve forceful shutdown for recovery and accept the risk of skipped cleanup.
Operational checklist before you press Enter
- Host identity and environment verified.
- Poweroff versus reboot selected deliberately.
- Maintenance window approved and timezone understood.
- Users and service owners notified.
- Critical workloads drained or stopped according to their runbooks.
- Out-of-band access available if SSH closes or the boot fails.
- Any force option justified, documented and treated as a potential data-loss event.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run shutdown from a non-root account?
Usually yes, with sudo and a sudoers policy that permits the operation. Without that authorization, the command should be rejected rather than bypassed.
Does cancelling a scheduled shutdown restart services that were already stopped?
No. Cancellation removes the pending shutdown request; it does not automatically restore services or reverse other maintenance steps. Check service status before resuming normal traffic.
Is a shutdown command safe inside a container?
It depends on the container runtime and privileges. Containers generally do not control the host’s power state, and privileged containers may have unusual effects. Use the host or orchestrator’s documented drain and restart procedure instead of assuming host semantics.
What should I verify after a reboot?
Confirm the host is reachable, validate time synchronization and storage mounts, check failed systemd units, and verify application health, replication and monitoring before declaring maintenance complete.
