Spoilers for the ending of Little Nightmares II. Six lets Mono fall after he frees her from the Signal Tower, but the game never confirms exactly why. The strongest interpretation is that breaking her music box destroys a refuge she depended on, while the dangerous world has already made trust between them fragile. The ending strongly implies Mono becomes the Thin Man, though it does not fully explain the time loop.
What happens at the end of Little Nightmares II?
Mono reaches Six in the Signal Tower while she is transformed and absorbed in her music box. He breaks the box, Six returns to her usual form, and they escape together. When Mono hangs over a gap, Six catches him—but then releases his hand. The final sequence connects Mono to the Thin Man.

Those are the events shown on screen. Six’s reason for letting go is not spoken or otherwise directly confirmed. Bandai Namco’s official premise describes Mono as trapped in a world distorted by a distant tower’s transmission, with Six as his guide as he tries to save her from her fate (Bandai Namco’s game page).
Why might Six let Mono fall?
Mono destroys the refuge the music box gives her
The music box is more than an object Six is holding: it offers a kind of escape from the hostile world around her. A PlayStation Blog article describes it as “another form of escapism” and says Six becomes entranced by its music while trapped in the Hunter’s shack. In the tower, Mono’s act frees her from her fixation—but also takes that refuge away. It is plausible that Six experiences the rescue as a painful rupture, even if Mono means to help (PlayStation Blog: “A child’s guide to escapism”).

Cooperation has never meant complete trust
Lucas Roussel, producer of the Little Nightmares series, describes Mono and Six’s bond as central to the story, but unstable. In a Bandai Namco interview, he says: “The relationship between Mono and Six is really important to the story of Little Nightmares II. They have a roller-coaster relationship, with a lot of ups and downs. The two are journeying through an incredibly dangerous world, and they’ve got to help each other out if they want to keep going. And that means they both worry about whether they can really trust one another.” (Bandai Namco interview with Lucas Roussel.)
That context makes a break in trust a credible reading of Six’s choice. It does not prove that she lets go because she is angry, afraid, hurt, or convinced Mono betrayed her. Those are interpretations of an action, not confirmed explanations from the developers.

What is confirmed, and what remains interpretation?
| Claim | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Mono breaks the music box and frees Six from her transformed state. | Shown in the game’s finale; the official premise identifies Mono’s effort to save Six from her fate (Bandai Namco). |
| Six catches Mono, then releases him. | Shown on screen. Roussel says the characters do not speak and their feelings are conveyed through their actions (Bandai Namco interview). |
| Six lets go because Mono destroys her refuge or breaks her trust. | A plausible thematic interpretation, supported by the music box’s escapist role and Roussel’s comments about trust; no reviewed official source confirms this as her motive (PlayStation Blog; Bandai Namco interview). |
| Mono becomes the Thin Man. | The final sequence strongly implies a connection, but the official commentary does not spell out every step or establish a complete time-loop mechanism (Bandai Namco interview). |
Does Six recognize Mono as the Thin Man?
The ending invites viewers to connect Mono with the Thin Man, but the official material cited here does not confirm that Six recognizes Mono, sees his future face, or acts because she knows what he will become. Nor does it lay out a definitive explanation of how the apparent loop works. Treat those ideas as fan interpretations, not established facts.
That openness fits the series’ approach to storytelling. Roussel says the developers want players to imagine what the story and characters mean, including what happened to Six. Another Bandai Namco interview describes the series as deliberately withholding details and complicating a simple view of children as wholly innocent (Roussel interview; Bandai Namco interview on storytelling).

How to judge the main interpretations
- Escapism: The music box gives Six comfort, and Mono’s rescue ends that escape. This reading has thematic support, but not a confirmed motive.
- Broken trust: The developers describe the pair’s relationship as cooperative but marked by uncertainty about whether they can trust each other. That makes betrayal or rupture plausible, without specifying Six’s thoughts in the final moment.
- Thin Man recognition or loop logic: These theories try to explain the ending’s striking connection between Mono and the Thin Man. The connection is strongly implied; the precise mechanics and Six’s awareness are not confirmed in the cited official commentary.
Why does the ending leave Six’s motive unclear?
Mono and Six do not explain themselves in dialogue. Roussel says the developers communicate through their actions and leave questions about the characters’ relationship and feelings for players to work out. That means the most careful answer is also the most useful one: Six’s release of Mono is deliberate on screen, but why she makes that choice remains open.
