Little Nightmares III Changes the Series—But Not Enough to Feel Fresh

Little Nightmares III makes online co-op its biggest change, while keeping the series’ familiar stealth, chase, and puzzle-platforming structure.

Little Nightmares III changes the series most through online co-op, not through its familiar stealth, chase, and puzzle-platforming loop. That contrast is the source of the disappointment: PC Gamer’s reviewer found the new game atmospheric and visually impressive, but felt that its hands-on play repeated too much of what came before. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus verdict.

What is different about Little Nightmares III?

The clearest change is that Little Nightmares III is built around two protagonists who can be controlled by two online players. Low carries a bow and Alone a wrench; each character’s signature tool helps with obstacles and threats. The story places them in the Spiral, a region of the Nowhere, as they work together to escape. The official game page identifies Supermassive Games as the developer, a change from the earlier entries, but a different studio alone does not establish a different quality or artistic direction. Bandai Namco’s official game page has the current game details.

The online partnership expands on the AI companion idea in Little Nightmares II. In a September 2025 PlayStation Blog hands-on report and producer interview, Bandai Namco Global Producer Coralie Feniello described the tactile actions at the heart of a co-op sequence: “In concept, it’s quite simple – pulling, pushing, picking up stuff are all tactile actions that make you feel like a child in that world.” Feniello also said the team began by designing multiplayer and playtested the game with the goal of making the AI behave like a human partner. That design priority helps explain why co-op is the defining structural change, even though solo play remains available.

How does it compare with the first two games?

Comparison What Little Nightmares III does What that means
Developer Supermassive Games, according to the official game page A new studio for the series, but not proof by itself of a change in quality or intent.
Characters New protagonists Low and Alone, with a bow and wrench respectively Their tools support both puzzles and encounters.
Partner structure Online co-op for two players, or an AI companion in solo play The series’ companion dynamic becomes an explicit multiplayer system.
Core play Stealth, chases, puzzle rooms, and environmental traversal The familiar gameplay grammar remains recognizable rather than being replaced.
Atmosphere and presentation PC Gamer’s reviewer praised the atmosphere and visual presentation while finding the play rote and the horror not very scary This is the reviewer’s response, not a universal measure of the game.

The key distinction is between a new way to experience the series and a substantially new play loop. PC Gamer’s review of Little Nightmares III describes stealth sections, chase sequences, puzzle rooms, and traversal that resemble the earlier games. The reviewer’s complaint is not that the series’ identity has vanished; it is that the familiar sequence did not feel fresh enough after two previous entries. They found the game potent atmospherically and, in some respects, more visually impressive than its predecessors, but judged the hands-on play rote and the horror insufficiently frightening.

Can you play Little Nightmares III co-op, solo, or on the couch?

Online co-op

Yes. The publisher describes co-op as online, requiring an internet connection. Its Friend’s Pass lets a friend join with one copy of the game on supported platforms. The publisher does not describe local couch co-op, so do not buy it expecting two people to play together on one system. Consult the official game page and co-op Q&A for current platform-specific support.

Solo play

You can play alone with an AI partner controlling the other character. The game is not limited to pairs of human players.

Co-op save restrictions

A co-op save is tied to the same two players from start to finish. You cannot turn a save started in solo mode into a co-op save, or switch a co-op save back to solo; separate saves are available for different modes.

Cross-platform support

The publisher says multiplayer between different manufacturers’ platforms is unsupported. A later update changed one important platform detail: Bandai Namco’s January 2026 update enabled cross-generation multiplayer between Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 and listed fixes for synchronization and co-op progression. That does not mean cross-play is generally available across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo systems. What platforms and editions are available?

Bandai Namco announced an October 10, 2025 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The official game page now presents the game as available. Its Standard edition contains the main game. A 2025 publisher Q&A described the Deluxe edition as including the Secrets of the Spiral expansion pass, with two additional chapters planned, plus costume packs. The current product page also lists DLC and announces Backstage and The Shores; what is included and available can vary by edition and platform, so check the relevant storefront before purchasing. Bandai Namco’s edition and co-op Q&A provides the publisher’s description.

Does the co-op change make the game feel new?

It changes the social structure more than the underlying rhythm. Coordinating Low’s bow and Alone’s wrench with another person gives the familiar puzzles a different dimension, and solo players still have an AI companion. But if what you wanted from a third game was a major evolution of the stealth-and-chase formula, a new co-op option may not be enough. That is the specific tension in PC Gamer’s criticism: the series’ atmosphere and visual identity remain compelling to the reviewer, while the familiar encounters keep the play from feeling as novel as the multiplayer premise suggests.
