Live A Live Reviews: Is the HD-2D RPG Remake Worth Playing?

Live A Live is a seven-part RPG anthology praised for its variety, HD-2D presentation, and remastered score, though some combat and old-school conventions feel dated.

Live A Live is an unusual anthology-style RPG, not one continuous party adventure: seven protagonists lead separate stories in different eras, and each chapter changes the premise and style of play. Reviewers praise its variety, HD-2D presentation, and remastered Yoko Shimomura score, while warning that some combat and older RPG conventions can feel dated. If you want a distinctive, story-led JRPG, it is worth considering; if you want consistently brisk, modern combat, its unevenness may frustrate you.

What is Live A Live like?

Square Enix’s remake of the Japanese Super Famicom RPG brings together seven stories that players can experience in any order, according to the official announcement. Rather than following one hero through a single, consistent world, the game moves among different periods and protagonists. The chapters are Prehistory, The Wild West, Imperial China, Twilight of Edo Japan, Present Day, The Near Future, and The Distant Future, as listed on Steam.

The premise and mechanics shift with each setting. GameSpot describes, for example, a martial-arts master training disciples, a Wild West chapter where preparation matters in a bandit confrontation, and a space-horror story that requires little fighting. The Present Day chapter instead centers on successive battles. That variety is the game’s defining appeal—and means an individual chapter may not represent the whole experience.

What do reviews praise?

Distinct stories and changing play styles

Reviewers value the game’s willingness to experiment with different protagonists, settings, and chapter-specific mechanics. Nintendo Life’s Alana Hagues gave the Switch version 8/10 in 2022, praising the way its varied gameplay, music, and visuals come together. GameSpot also rated the remake 8/10, highlighting its different worlds, storytelling, and presentation. Nintendo Life’s roundup reproduced IGN’s view that the game was a worthwhile piece of JRPG history to remake for a global audience; that is an attributed perspective, not a unanimous verdict.

  • Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
  • Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations

HD-2D presentation and music

The remake uses Square Enix’s HD-2D style, combining pixel-art characters and environments with dimensional effects. Its score is a remastered version of music by original composer Yoko Shimomura, a feature highlighted in the publisher’s description. The renewed presentation helps distinguish the different eras while preserving the source game’s identity.

What are the main criticisms?

The remake preserves parts of an older RPG rather than modernizing every friction point. GameSpot says combat can feel plodding, and Polygon, as summarized in Nintendo Life’s review roundup, was critical of combat before chapter finales. Hagues also noted older RPG quirks and vague late-game elements, as well as uneven voice acting. These concerns matter most if you expect every chapter to have the same pace or a consistently streamlined battle loop.

The overall critical picture is positive about the game’s originality and presentation, but not about every part of its moment-to-moment play. It is better understood as an idiosyncratic older RPG thoughtfully brought to a broader audience than as a uniformly modern redesign. GameSpot says the original had no official English release before the remake.

Which platforms is Live A Live on?

The remake launched first on Nintendo Switch in July 2022. Square Enix announced PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Steam versions in March 2023; Steam lists the PC release date as April 27, 2023.
