live.dll is usually the legacy BitDefender Live Upgrade component, not a Windows file. If Windows cannot find it, repair or remove the BitDefender installation that requested it instead of downloading a loose DLL into a system folder.
What this file actually does
live.dll is associated with the BitDefender Live Upgrade component supplied with BitDefender Desktop 7. Its publisher is SOFTWIN S.R.L., and public file records identify the commonly catalogued build as a 32-bit file, version 10.2.0.21, approximately 0.16 MB.
This is an application DLL. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or normal hardware driver. There is no reliable reason to expect Windows 11 or Windows 10 to provide it through Windows Update, System32, or SysWOW64.
The filename alone is not enough to identify the caller. Other programs can use the same generic filename. Before replacing anything, find the executable, shortcut, service, or startup entry that requested live.dll.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when an old BitDefender program starts | Incomplete or damaged BitDefender installation | Repair or reinstall the associated program |
| Error appears at every boot after BitDefender was removed | Orphaned startup entry, service, or scheduled task | Identify and remove the old startup reference |
| The DLL disappeared after a security scan | Quarantine or antivirus deletion | Review quarantine and verify the installation |
live.dll exists but Windows says its dependency is missing |
Another application component is absent | Reinstall the complete application |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” appears | Corruption, wrong architecture, or legacy incompatibility | Replace the complete application installation |
| The error names a different program or directory | Unrelated file with the same name | Repair that specific program, not BitDefender |
| The error began after an update or disk problem | Corruption or failed installation | Check the application and disk, then reinstall |
1. Identify which program is calling live.dll
Do this before downloading, copying, or deleting anything.
Check the full error path
Read the complete error dialog. Some messages include the path to the failing executable or DLL. A path containing an old BitDefender or SOFTWIN installation directory supports the BitDefender connection.
If the message only says live.dll, continue with these checks.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read Target and Start in.
- Look for a BitDefender or SOFTWIN directory.
- Select Cancel when finished.
If the shortcut points to a removed program, do not replace the DLL. Unpin or delete the obsolete shortcut, then check startup locations.
Check Startup Apps
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for BitDefender, SOFTWIN, Live Upgrade, or an entry with a missing executable.
- Right-click a clearly identified obsolete entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling an entry stops it from launching, but it does not uninstall the old program. If the entry is unfamiliar, leave it enabled until you identify its file path.
Check Event Viewer
- Press
Win+X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Find from the Actions pane.
- Search for
live.dll. - Open matching events and note the application name and path.
If Event Viewer identifies a non-BitDefender application, follow that application’s repair process instead. The same filename does not prove the same file or publisher.
2. Repair or reinstall the owning BitDefender program
This is the most likely solution.
If BitDefender Desktop 7 is still installed
Use legitimate original installation media or a trusted installer that belongs to that product. Because Desktop 7 is a legacy product, its installer may not be supplied through current Bitdefender installation workflows.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the BitDefender or SOFTWIN entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer offers.
- If Repair is available, choose it.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
If repair is unavailable, uninstall the damaged installation and restart. Then reinstall from the original trusted media. Do not mix files from different BitDefender versions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you still need the program
Use the installer that matches the original application and its architecture. A 32-bit DLL normally belongs in the application’s own directory and is loaded by a 32-bit program. It does not become correct merely because it is copied into a Windows system directory.
If the old installer refuses to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11, that may be a compatibility limit rather than a missing-DLL problem. You can try the application compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application installer or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode cannot make an obsolete antivirus safe or fully compatible. If the application remains unstable, remove it and use a current security product instead.
If you no longer need BitDefender
Remove the obsolete program rather than restoring a loose DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for BitDefender or SOFTWIN.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the identified entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the vendor’s removal process.
- Restart Windows.
If the error continues after removal, an orphaned startup entry, service, task, or shortcut is probably still pointing to the old executable. Continue to the cleanup section below.
For current Bitdefender products
Current Bitdefender products use current installers and Bitdefender Central rather than the Desktop 7 installer. If the error belongs to a current installation, remove that installation through Windows or the vendor’s supported removal process, then install the current product again from the vendor account or installer.
Do not use a Desktop 7 DLL to repair a current Bitdefender product. The historical file and current products are not interchangeable.
3. Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
A security product may have quarantined or deleted the file because the installation was damaged, modified, or detected as unsafe.

Check quarantine only when you have identified the owning application and trust the original installation.
- Open your antivirus application.
- Open Quarantine, History, Detected items, or a similarly named area.
- Search for
live.dlland the related BitDefender executable. - Inspect the original path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it belongs to the trusted, known installation.
- Restart the application and test it.
Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL to run. If you believe the detection is a false positive, submit it to the security vendor and reinstall the complete application if possible.
Restoring a quarantined file is less reliable than repairing the installation. If the file repeatedly disappears, replace or remove the entire application rather than creating an exclusion for a single DLL.
4. Remove an orphaned startup reference
If the error appears during every boot even though BitDefender has been uninstalled, find the component launching the old path.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
taskschd.msc. - Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names or actions mention BitDefender, SOFTWIN, or the old installation folder.
- Double-click a suspected task.
- Open the Actions tab and read the executable path.
- Disable or delete the task only after confirming it belongs to the removed program.
- Restart Windows.
Check Services
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for a service clearly belonging to the removed BitDefender installation.
- Double-click it and record its Path to executable.
- If the path points to a deleted BitDefender directory, select Stop.
- Set Startup type to Disabled.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable an unfamiliar Microsoft service based only on its name. Confirm the executable path and publisher first.
Check registry startup entries carefully
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
regedit. - Press Enter.
- Before changing anything, select File, then Export.
- Save a backup of the relevant registry area.
- Use Edit, then Find, and search for
live.dll. - Inspect each result and confirm that it launches the removed BitDefender program.
- Delete only the confirmed obsolete value.
- Restart Windows.
Registry cleaners are not a substitute for identifying the caller. If you cannot confirm a value’s purpose, leave it unchanged.
5. Do not copy live.dll into System32 or SysWOW64
Downloading a loose DLL is a poor repair strategy for this file. Random DLL sources can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and a replacement may still fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged application installation.
Do not copy an unverified file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names are also confusing. System32 can contain 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility components. Neither folder is a general-purpose location for third-party application DLLs.

6. Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Ordinary application and update DLLs do not necessarily provide that function.
Do not use this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 live.dll
If you already tried it and received an error that the entry point was missing, that usually means registration is inappropriate. It does not prove that the file is corrupt.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official instructions specifically identify the DLL as a COM or ActiveX component and provide the correct registration command. The historical BitDefender Live Upgrade file should be repaired through its application installer instead.

7. Check for a missing dependency
Windows may report that the specified module could not be found even when live.dll is present. In that situation, the missing item can be a dependency loaded by live.dll.
The practical repair is to reinstall the complete application, not to guess at individual runtime packages.
Avoid installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages unless the error specifically names that runtime or the application’s documentation requires it. There is no verified basis for treating one of those packages as the default fix for live.dll.
If the application provides its own repair option, use that first. If it does not, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall from trusted original media.

8. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally recreate an application-owned BitDefender DLL, so use them as a secondary check rather than the main solution.
First install available Windows updates:
- Press
Win+I. - Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest the original application. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to the application repair path.
If repeatedly hunting component corruption and comparing SFC results is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the BitDefender program that owns live.dll.
9. Use System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an installation, cleanup, or update and a suitable restore point exists.

- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal files. It may also restore an obsolete BitDefender installation, so remove or repair that program afterward if it is no longer wanted.
10. Drivers and Windows Features are usually not the answer
live.dll is not identified as a device driver. Updating a graphics, chipset, storage, or network driver will not normally restore a missing BitDefender application DLL.
If the error occurs alongside a separate device failure, update that device through Device Manager:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
To reinstall a malfunctioning device driver:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to detect the device again.
- Install the driver from the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions, with its free scan showing what is outdated and the full version handling driver installation; it is not the definitive fix when a specific BitDefender installation owns live.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Windows Features are also not a normal repair for this file. Do not enable random legacy components hoping they will supply it. Enable a Windows feature only when the application explicitly requires that feature and identifies it by name.
11. Consider malware or disk corruption
If live.dll was modified, repeatedly deleted, or accompanied by other unexplained failures:
- Update your security software.
- Run a full system scan.
- Review detection history.
- Check available disk space.
- Inspect the drive for errors using the storage manufacturer’s diagnostics or Windows-supported tools.
- Replace the complete application installation.
Do not preserve an old antivirus installation merely by restoring one DLL. If the legacy product cannot run safely on the current Windows release, remove it and use a supported security product.
FAQ
Is live.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows system file. It is associated with the legacy BitDefender Live Upgrade component and should not be placed in System32 or `SysWOW64.
What installed live.dll?
The known record associates it with BitDefender Desktop 7 from SOFTWIN S.R.L. However, live.dll is a generic filename. Confirm the full path and calling executable before assuming BitDefender is responsible.
Can I download live.dll separately?
You should not use a random DLL download as the repair. Use trusted original BitDefender installation media, the vendor’s supported installer for a current product, or remove the orphaned reference if the old software is no longer needed.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependency of live.dll may be missing, the file may be corrupted, or the calling program may be loading the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete application and verify its path.
Should I run regsvr32 live.dll?
No, not routinely. This is an application update DLL, not a file that should be registered merely because Windows cannot load it.

What if the error appears after BitDefender was uninstalled?
Check Startup Apps, Task Scheduler, Services, shortcuts, and confirmed registry entries for an old BitDefender path. Remove only references that clearly belong to the uninstalled program.
What if reinstalling does not work?
The legacy BitDefender product may be incompatible with the current Windows release. Confirm the caller, run a security scan, remove the obsolete installation, and avoid forcing it to run through DLL copying.
