If livenattrav.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start an old Windows Live or Windows Essentials program whose installation is damaged or incomplete.
The safest fix is to repair or remove the parent application, not to download this DLL into a Windows system folder. Microsoft identifies the file among Windows Live Writer files, including an x86 build numbered 16.4.3508.205 with a size of 306,672 bytes. It is a legacy 32-bit application component, not a normal Windows system file. Microsoft’s security bulletin lists the file in that software family.

Windows Essentials 2012 is obsolete. Microsoft ended support on January 10, 2017, and no longer provides it as an official download. Existing installations can continue to work, but repairing or reinstalling one may require trusted original installation media. Microsoft also warns that unofficial Windows Essentials downloads may contain malware or hidden costs. See Microsoft’s Windows Essentials support page.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because livenattrav.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because livenattrav.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting livenattrav.dll.”
- “Error loading livenattrav.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “livenattrav.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of livenattrav.dll is missing. The named DLL is not always the only damaged component.
Fix 1: Identify the application named in the error
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Start with the complete error message. Look for the program name in the title bar or in the sentence surrounding the DLL error. If the error appears during startup, note whether it occurs immediately after signing in or only when opening a particular application.
Then check which legacy software remains installed:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Windows Essentials, Windows Live, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Writer, Messenger, or another old Microsoft application.
- If you use Control Panel instead, press Windows + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Look for the same entries under Programs and Features.
If Windows Essentials is not listed, check for a stale startup entry:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old Windows Live or Essentials entry.
- Select it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears and you no longer use the old application, uninstalling the obsolete program is safer than restoring one DLL.
If the error continues, inspect Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
- Record the executable named in the event details.
The executable path tells you which installation needs repair. If the event points to a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unrelated program directory, treat that copy as suspicious and scan the computer.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Older Windows Essentials installations may include a suite-level repair option.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Windows Essentials or the matching Windows Live entry.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair all Windows Essentials programs.
- Follow the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows when it finishes.
- Open the application that previously produced the error.
This repair restores the application’s matching files and dependencies instead of copying an unrelated DLL. A successful repair means the parent program opens without the livenattrav.dll message.

If there is no repair option, or the repair reports that source files are unavailable, do not download livenattrav.dll from a random DLL website. Continue with the next fix.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected Windows Live application
Time needed: 20–45 minutes, excluding time spent locating original media
Back up application data before removing an old Windows Live program. For Windows Live Mail, export or copy any locally stored mail and address-book data. For other applications, preserve project files and personal folders.
Then:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected Windows Live or Windows Essentials program.
- Choose the three-dot menu.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete matching application or suite from trusted original installation media.
- Restart again and test the application.
Because Windows Essentials is no longer available from Microsoft, there may be no current official installer to download. Do not substitute a DLL from another Windows Live release. A different build can have different dependencies and may produce a second load error.
If you no longer need the legacy program, leave it uninstalled. If the startup message disappears, the stale application was the cause and no DLL replacement is necessary.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and the file path
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Security software may quarantine an old application file, especially if the file is in an unexpected directory or the installation has been modified.
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent area.
- Search for
livenattrav.dll. - Record the original file path and detection name.
- Check whether the path belongs to a known Windows Live or Windows Essentials installation.
- Verify that the parent application is one you intentionally installed.
- Restore the file only if the installation is trusted and the detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- Run a full malware scan afterward.
Do not restore a copy found in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar user-profile directory, or an unrelated application folder. If the file appeared there, remove the suspicious program and scan the system instead.
If restoring the file does not solve the error, the installation may contain additional missing or mismatched dependencies. Repair or reinstall the parent application.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit compatibility and dependencies
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Known livenattrav.dll versions are 32-bit, including legacy builds such as 14.0.8117.416 and 15.4.3555.308. A 64-bit Windows computer can run a 32-bit Windows Live application normally, so seeing a 32-bit DLL on a 64-bit system is not itself a problem.

Do not replace it with a 64-bit file. The correct DLL must match the application build that requests it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” possible causes include:
- A corrupted DLL
- A file from a different Windows Live release
- A wrong-architecture replacement
- A damaged dependency
- A partially removed installation
The appropriate response is to repair or reinstall the complete application. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a first-line fix for this file because livenattrav.dll is an application component rather than an identified runtime package.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use these commands when Windows itself may be damaged or when several unrelated applications are failing. They do not normally recreate a missing Windows Essentials DLL.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected Windows Live application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to repairing or removing the parent application.
Recommended Free Tools
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the Windows Live program remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
Fix 7: Check drivers only if the application identifies a device problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A driver is not the normal cause of livenattrav.dll errors, and reinstalling drivers should not be your first step. Consider it only if the same failure also identifies a network adapter, audio device, graphics device, or other hardware problem.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category mentioned in the error or Event Viewer.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the device has a warning icon, right-click it and select Properties to read the device status. Resolve that hardware issue separately from the Windows Live installation.
Manually checking every device and matching driver versions can be slow. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the legacy application repair required for livenattrav.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy copying livenattrav.dll is usually wrong
Do not copy livenattrav.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not the normal repair location for this application DLL, and placing an unmatched file there can cause version conflicts or DLL hijacking.
Avoid random DLL download sites because the file may be:

- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Missing its companion dependencies

The safe source is the original, verified Windows Live or Windows Essentials installation media. Since Microsoft no longer distributes Windows Essentials, reinstalling from an unverified package is not automatically safe.
regsvr32 is also usually irrelevant. It registers DLLs that expose an entry point such as DllRegisterServer; it does not restore an ordinary runtime dependency. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 reference. Running:
regsvr32 livenattrav.dll
will not normally repair a missing or damaged Windows Live installation.

FAQ
Is livenattrav.dll a Windows system file?
No. It belongs to optional Microsoft Windows Live and Windows Essentials software. It should not ordinarily be treated as a required Windows 10 or Windows 11 system component.
Is livenattrav.dll legitimate?
Yes, the file is associated with Microsoft’s Windows Live software and is described as the Windows Live Client NAT Traversal Code Module. Its age and legacy status do not make it malware by themselves. Verify its location, signature, and parent installation.
Which program needs livenattrav.dll?
Usually an installed Windows Live or Windows Essentials component, especially software from the communications platform. The exact requesting executable must be identified from the error, Event Viewer, or the application path.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can a 64-bit PC use this DLL?
Yes. The documented versions are 32-bit, and 64-bit Windows can run a 32-bit parent application. Use the DLL supplied with that application rather than substituting a 64-bit file.
Will SFC restore livenattrav.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while livenattrav.dll is generally an optional application file. Repair or reinstall the Windows Live program instead.
What if the error appears at every startup?
If you no longer use Windows Live, disable its stale startup entry or uninstall the obsolete application. If Windows Essentials is absent from installed programs, inspect Task Manager startup entries, scheduled tasks, and Event Viewer for the executable still requesting the file.
Should I install Windows Essentials again?
Only if you still need the application and have trusted original installation media. Otherwise, removing the abandoned program is safer than restoring one isolated DLL.
