lmoufrc.dll Not Found — Safe Repair Paths for Legacy MouseWare

lmoufrc.dll is a Logitech MouseWare driver file called the Logitech Force Feedback Driver. If Windows reports that lmoufrc.dll is missing, cannot load, or was not found, the safest solution is to repair or remove the old MouseWare installation rather than download the DLL separately.

This is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. It was supplied with legacy Logitech mouse and force-feedback software. The program that is failing may be an old Logitech utility, a game configured for Logitech hardware, or a leftover startup component.

The safest fix first

Before changing Windows files, answer two questions:

  1. Do you still use the Logitech mouse or other hardware that installed MouseWare?
  2. Does the error appear when launching a particular program, or every time Windows starts?

If you still need the hardware, reinstall the complete MouseWare package from Logitech installation media or Logitech’s official support resources. Do not replace only lmoufrc.dll.

Logitech M510 Full Size Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse
  • Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
  • You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

If you no longer use the hardware, uninstall MouseWare and remove the obsolete startup or driver reference. A missing file that belongs to unwanted legacy software does not need to be restored.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Logitech MouseWare

Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus a restart

A complete reinstall is the most likely solution when the error appears while opening an old Logitech utility or a program that used Logitech force-feedback features.

MouseWare is legacy software. Logitech’s archived product information identifies MouseWare as software for older Windows versions, including Windows XP or earlier. Modern Windows 10 and Windows 11 may block or restrict parts of an old driver even if the installation completes.

Step 1: Check whether MouseWare is installed

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for MouseWare or Logitech.
  5. If MouseWare appears, select its three-dot menu or entry.
  6. Choose Uninstall and follow the wizard.
  7. Restart Windows when prompted.

If you do not see MouseWare, check the older Control Panel list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for MouseWare, Logitech MouseWare, or an older Logitech mouse driver.
  5. Uninstall it if present.
  6. Restart the computer.

Do not remove unrelated modern Logitech software unless you know it belongs to the old device.

Step 2: Reinstall the matching package

Use the original Logitech installation disc, archived installer, or Logitech’s official support page for the exact mouse model. Choose the package intended for that device rather than downloading a standalone lmoufrc.dll.

During setup:

  1. Right-click the installer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. If the installer will not run, select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Try the older Windows version indicated by the software documentation.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator.
  7. Click Apply, then OK.
  8. Run the installer.
  9. Restart Windows after installation.

Compatibility mode can help the installer start, but it cannot make an obsolete kernel driver compatible with every modern Windows security requirement. If the setup fails, Windows displays a driver-blocking message, or the mouse remains unusable, the practical solution may be a current Logitech-supported device.

Step 3: Test the original program

After restarting:

  1. Connect the original Logitech hardware.
  2. Open the Logitech utility or old application that previously failed.
  3. Check whether the error returns.
  4. Test the mouse buttons and force-feedback features if applicable.

If the application starts and the hardware works, the repair succeeded.

  • Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
  • Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)

If the same error remains, the installation may be incomplete, the application may require a different historical MouseWare build, or a dependency of lmoufrc.dll may be missing. Continue with the checks below instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.

Fix 2: Update, reinstall, or remove the related driver

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Because lmoufrc.dll belongs to a hardware driver package, inspect the associated Logitech device in Device Manager. This is particularly important if the error began after connecting an old mouse, restoring a backup, or changing Windows versions.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  4. Also inspect Human Interface Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  5. Look for a Logitech device, an Unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
  6. Double-click the suspicious device.
  7. Read the message under Device status.

If the device is present:

  1. Open the Driver tab.
  2. Select Driver Details if available.
  3. Note whether the listed driver belongs to Logitech.
  4. Select Uninstall Device only if you intend to remove the obsolete package.
  5. If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the complete driver package from Logitech’s official support resources.

Do not delete individual files from the driver folder while the package remains installed. The installer also manages services, configuration, registry entries, and dependencies.

When manually comparing 32-bit and 64-bit software, remember that a 32-bit application cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports redirected 32-bit components. The names can be confusing, so copying a DLL between those folders is not a repair strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several hardware entries and guessing which driver is stale. Its free scan identifies driver issues, while driver installation and repair require the full version; for this specific error, reinstalling the matching Logitech package remains the definitive fix.

If you no longer use the Logitech device

Remove the old device and its software instead:

  1. Disconnect the Logitech hardware.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Uninstall MouseWare and related obsolete Logitech entries.
  4. Open Device Manager.
  5. Select View > Show hidden devices.
  6. Expand the mouse, Human Interface Device, and USB sections.
  7. Right-click only clearly identified obsolete Logitech entries.
  8. Select Uninstall device.
  9. Restart Windows.

Do not remove a device merely because it contains the word “HID.” Many current keyboards, mice, touchpads, and USB devices use standard HID drivers.

Fix 3: Stop a leftover startup reference

Time needed: 10–15 minutes

If MouseWare was already removed but Windows still reports lmoufrc.dll at every startup, an old startup entry, scheduled task, service, shortcut, or device configuration may still be calling it.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Startup.
  4. Look for MouseWare, Logitech, or an unidentified entry associated with the old installation.
  5. Turn off the entry temporarily.
  6. Restart Windows.

You can also use Task Manager:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Right-click the suspected old Logitech entry.
  4. Select Disable.
  5. Restart.

If the error disappears, the missing DLL was being requested by that startup component. Leave it disabled if the hardware is no longer needed, or reinstall the complete MouseWare package if you still use the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check scheduled tasks

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Task Scheduler.
  3. Open Task Scheduler.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Look for an entry clearly associated with old Logitech software.
  6. Open its Actions tab and inspect the program path.
  7. Disable the task if it points to a removed MouseWare folder.
  8. Restart Windows.

Avoid deleting tasks from Microsoft, Windows, Intel, graphics, security, or update publishers unless you have identified them precisely.

Check services carefully

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for a clearly identified obsolete Logitech service.
  5. Double-click it.
  6. Note its Path to executable.
  7. If the path points to a deleted MouseWare installation, set Startup type to Disabled.
  8. Select Stop, then Apply and OK.
  9. Restart Windows.

Do not use a registry-cleaner program or manually delete random registry keys. Logitech’s historical cleanup instructions include registry and driver entries for old Windows versions, but manual registry removal can damage a modern installation if the wrong entry is deleted.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Security software may quarantine an old driver file. That does not prove the file is safe. lmoufrc.dll is very old, and a detection should be investigated rather than bypassed.

Review Windows Security

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry involving lmoufrc.dll, MouseWare, or a Logitech driver.
  7. Open the detection details.
  8. Check the original file path and detection reason.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It came from a legitimate Logitech installation.
  • The path matches the expected MouseWare installation.
  • You are certain the file was not downloaded from an untrusted site.
  • A current security scan does not identify it as malicious.

If the file was downloaded separately, came from an unknown folder, or remains detected, leave it quarantined. Remove MouseWare and reinstall it from trusted Logitech media instead.

Run a full scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to force an old DLL to load.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

lmoufrc.dll is not owned by Windows, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use DISM and SFC when you also have broader symptoms, such as failed Windows updates, damaged built-in programs, or several unrelated system errors.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the command to finish.
  3. Restart Windows if requested.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files appear intact.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Windows corruption was repaired.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: broader Windows repair may still be needed.

These commands may repair Windows components, but they are unlikely to recreate a deleted Logitech DLL. If the scan reports no problems and lmoufrc.dll is still missing, return to the MouseWare installation rather than repeating SFC.

Logitech M705 Marathon Full Size 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse - Black
  • Click more. Scroll more. Do more. Logitech Marathon Mouse M705 uses far less power than comparable wireless mice from other companies. That means you can go up to three full years between battery changes.*
  • Hyper-fast scrolling lets you fly through long documents and Web pages with a single spin of a nearly frictionless metal scroll wheel.
  • The sculpted, right-hand shape guides your hand to a naturally comfortable position and places customizable control within your reach. Two thumb buttons lets you move quickly between Web pages.**
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There's no need to unplug it when you move around, so there's less worry of it being broken or lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
  • Laser grade tracking delivers smooth, responsive, precise cursor control on surfaces that cause problems for standard optical mice, such as polished or wood-grain tables.***

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of identifying damaged Windows components less repetitive. Its free scan shows detected issues, while repair requires the full version; it is not a substitute for reinstalling MouseWare when the missing file belongs to that package.

Do not register lmoufrc.dll with Regsvr32

Time needed: none

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration entry point used by COM components. Logitech documents lmoufrc.dll as a MouseWare driver file, not as a self-registering COM server.

Do not treat this as a standard repair:

regsvr32 lmoufrc.dll

It may produce errors such as DllRegisterServer was not found, or an architecture mismatch. Registering a driver DLL does not recreate the MouseWare installation, driver service, INF configuration, or dependencies.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Downloading lmoufrc.dll from a DLL catalog or copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 can make the situation worse.

The replacement may be:

  • The wrong MouseWare build.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Modified or malicious.
  • Missing a required dependency.
  • Incompatible with the application that requested it.
  • Unable to provide the driver registration and configuration that MouseWare needs.

A manually copied file can also change the error from “missing” to “bad image,” “entry point not found,” or “the specified module could not be found.” That often indicates a mismatch rather than progress.

Use the original Logitech package, installation media, or official Logitech support resources. If Logitech no longer provides a compatible package for the device, replacing the obsolete hardware or running the old software in an isolated older Windows environment may be safer than forcing its DLL into a current system.

Common causes and what they mean

What happened Likely explanation Best response
Error started after uninstalling MouseWare A startup or driver reference remains Disable the obsolete entry or reinstall, then uninstall cleanly
Error appears when launching an old game The game or its Logitech integration expects MouseWare Reinstall the matching complete package
Error began after a Windows upgrade Legacy driver incompatibility Try compatibility troubleshooting or replace the hardware
Antivirus quarantined the file The file may be missing, unsafe, or falsely detected Inspect quarantine and reinstall from trusted media
The file was restored manually but the error changed Wrong version, architecture, or dependency Remove it and reinstall the full package
SFC finds no problems Windows is healthy, but the third-party DLL is absent Repair MouseWare instead
Error says “specified module could not be found” A dependency may be missing, not necessarily lmoufrc.dll itself Reinstall the complete application and driver package

What the error message tells you

You may see messages such as:

  • “This application failed to start because lmoufrc.dll was not found.”
  • “The file lmoufrc.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: lmoufrc.dll.”
  • “The program can’t start because lmoufrc.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Error loading lmoufrc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Failed to load lmoufrc.dll.”

These messages identify a load failure, not necessarily the exact root cause. Windows may name lmoufrc.dll when the DLL itself is absent, when another dependency cannot be loaded, or when the installed file is incompatible.

If you see a “not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image” message, treat it as a possible compatibility or architecture problem. Public evidence does not establish that wording as a file-specific Logitech message.

Frequently asked questions

Is lmoufrc.dll part of Windows?

No. Available Logitech documentation associates it with MouseWare and lists it with other Logitech mouse driver files. It is not a normal Windows component.

Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX file?

There is no evidence that this filename belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Windows Update. Reinstalling those packages is not justified by this filename alone.

Should I copy it to System32?

Normally no. The correct file must match the MouseWare package, application, and architecture. Copying it to a system folder does not repair the associated driver or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to register it?

Normally no. lmoufrc.dll is documented as a MouseWare driver file, not a normal self-registering COM DLL. Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix.

What if I still need the old mouse?

Find the exact MouseWare package for the model from Logitech’s official support resources or original media. Install the complete package and use compatibility settings only when necessary.

What if I do not need the mouse anymore?

Uninstall MouseWare, remove the obsolete Logitech device from Device Manager if appropriate, and disable leftover startup tasks or services. There is no reason to restore a legacy DLL that no current program needs.

Can Windows 11 or Windows 10 run MouseWare?

Support is not established for current Windows versions. Logitech’s archived MouseWare information targets older Windows releases. The software may install only with compatibility workarounds, and its old driver may still be blocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error appear after the file was restored?

The restored file may be the wrong version or architecture, or one of its dependencies may still be missing. Replace the isolated DLL with a complete matching MouseWare installation.

When should I use System Restore?

Use System Restore only if the problem clearly began after a recent software change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a substitute for obtaining the correct Logitech package, but it can reverse a recent driver or application change.

Final diagnostic path

Use this order:

  1. Identify the program, game, or device requesting lmoufrc.dll.
  2. Decide whether the old Logitech hardware is still needed.
  3. If it is needed, uninstall and reinstall the complete matching MouseWare package.
  4. Check Device Manager for the related Logitech device and driver.
  5. If MouseWare is no longer needed, remove it and disable leftover startup references.
  6. Inspect antivirus quarantine without automatically restoring the file.
  7. Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is present.
  8. Do not download a standalone DLL or register it with regsvr32.

That approach addresses the actual source of the file instead of hiding one missing component and leaving the obsolete driver installation broken.
