If ltkrn90n.dll is missing, Windows usually cannot start an older imaging-enabled application that depends on the LEADTOOLS runtime. The safest fix is to identify that parent application and repair or reinstall it from its original installer, rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What is ltkrn90n.dll
ltkrn90n.dll is a legacy LEADTOOLS DLL for Win32 published by LEAD Technologies, Inc. It is the kernel/runtime component used by older C and Win32 imaging applications.
LEADTOOLS documentation describes the LTKRN library as required by C DLL applications. In the LEADTOOLS 9 product line, display functionality was divided between LTKRN90N.DLL and LTDIS90N.DLL. Other companion files may include ltfil90n.dll and image-format libraries.
The N name belongs to an older non-Unicode Win32 naming scheme. It does not mean that the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32, and it does not identify a modern 64-bit Windows component.

This is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET file
- A universal file shared by every application
Historical reports associate this runtime with Microsoft FrontPage 2000, Office-era software, PaperPort, Quicken, and other older imaging-enabled programs. No single application universally owns the file.

A file with the same name from another LEADTOOLS release may not work. Its exports, companion libraries, and expected installation path must match the application that requested it.
First identify the application that needs the file
Do not start by searching Windows folders. Start with the exact program shown in the error.
Common messages include:
- “Cannot find
LTKRN90N.DLL” - “Can not load
LTKRN90N.DLL” - “This application failed to start because ltkrn90n.dll was not found”
- An installer error mentioning
ltdis90n.dllor another LEADTOOLS file
The wording can differ between applications, so record the complete message.

Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that starts the failing program.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the program name and folder shown in Start in.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for related files such as
ltdis90n.dll,ltfil90n.dll, or image-format DLLs.
The folder containing the executable is usually more useful than a search of System32.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Look for Modify, Repair, Advanced options, or Uninstall.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, if available.
Older Office and FrontPage installations may instead appear in Control Panel:
- Press
Windowskey, type Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the relevant Office or FrontPage entry.
- Choose Change.
- Follow the maintenance or repair wizard.
If the error appears during installation
The missing file may still be on the installation media, not on the installed computer. This commonly happens when an older installer reads a scratched disc, incomplete network share, or damaged copied setup folder.
Record:
- The application being installed
- The full file named in the error
- The drive or source being used
- Whether the error occurs at the same point every time
Do not copy a random DLL into the destination folder to satisfy the installer. Repair the installation source or obtain a clean, legitimate copy of the original installation media.
Fix 1: Repair the parent application
Repair is the best first step because it restores ltkrn90n.dll together with the companion files and registry settings expected by the application.
Use the Windows repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Select Modify or Repair, if available.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the application again.
If the application has an Advanced options page, select Repair before selecting Reset. Reset may remove application settings and local data.

A successful repair normally means the program starts without the DLL message and can open the files or images that previously triggered the failure.
Use the original installer
If no repair option exists:
- Locate the original CD, DVD, mounted installer image, network share, or archived setup files.
- Confirm that the source belongs to the affected application.
- Close other programs.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, choose Reinstall.
- Supply the requested installation source.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
For old Office or FrontPage software, the installer may request the original media even when the program is already installed. That is expected. Use the same edition and installation source whenever possible.

If setup reports an error reading ltdis90n.dll or another file, stop and check the media or copied setup folder. A damaged source can repeatedly reinstall an incomplete runtime.
If the program was moved manually
Older applications often depend on their original directory structure. If the program folder was copied from another computer, moved to another drive, restored from a backup, or renamed, its DLL dependencies may no longer resolve correctly.
Use the original installer to place the program in its expected location. Do not assume that copying the entire old program folder is equivalent to an installation.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an old DLL because it is uncommon, unsigned, or associated with obsolete software. Age alone does not prove that ltkrn90n.dll is malicious, and a detection should be evaluated using its path, publisher, provenance, and detection details.
Windows Security steps
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to the affected application or
ltkrn90n.dll. - Open an entry to inspect its path and action.
- Restore it only if the file came from the application’s trusted original installer or a verified backup.
- Run the parent application’s repair process afterward.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unexpected download directory, or an unknown program folder, leave it quarantined and investigate further.
If the DLL is restored but the program still fails, repair the application. A missing companion file may be the actual problem.
Fix 3: Restore the exact application file from a trusted source
Manual replacement can be safe only in a narrow situation: you have the exact file from the affected program’s original installer, a verified backup, or trusted installation media.
Before replacing anything, confirm:
- The file belongs to the same application
- The path matches the application’s installation folder
- The source is legitimate
- The file is from the same product release
- Related LEADTOOLS files are available
- Antivirus does not report a threat
Make a backup of the existing application folder before changing it. Then use the parent application’s repair or reinstall process instead of copying only one file whenever possible.

Windows normally checks the application directory during DLL loading. That is why the correct destination is generally the program’s own folder, not a Windows system directory.
Fix 4: Check whether the old application is compatible with Windows
LEADTOOLS 9 dates from the era of legacy Win32 software. FrontPage 2000, Office 2000, and similar programs are obsolete and unsupported on current Windows releases.
Restoring the DLL may remove one error while leaving other problems caused by:
- Obsolete installers
- Permissions
- Unsupported Office components
- Missing companion runtimes
- Old licensing systems
- Incompatible drivers
- File-system or security changes in modern Windows
Try the built-in compatibility troubleshooter only after preserving the original installation source:
- Right-click the application’s executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Follow the suggested tests.
- Test the program after each change.
You can also select Run this program as an administrator on the same tab for a controlled test. Do not permanently weaken security settings or disable antivirus protection just to make an obsolete application start.
If the application remains unreliable, use a supported replacement or a properly isolated legacy environment. Replacing ltkrn90n.dll does not guarantee that the entire program will function on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 5: Check Windows component integrity
Because ltkrn90n.dll is a third-party application DLL, Windows component repair tools normally will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows broader corruption, not as the primary repair for one old application.
Examples of broader symptoms include Windows features failing, several unrelated system programs reporting corruption, or repeated problems after an interrupted update.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired protected Windows files but ltkrn90n.dll is still missing, return to the application repair or reinstall steps. That result is expected because SFC does not normally own or restore a LEADTOOLS DLL.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the application uses imaging hardware
ltkrn90n.dll is not a device driver. Device Manager will not normally restore it. Driver troubleshooting is relevant only if the error began alongside a scanner, camera, printer, capture card, or other imaging device failure.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and read the Device status message.
- Use Update driver only with a driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not uninstall a working device driver merely because the application reports ltkrn90n.dll. The application runtime and the hardware driver are separate components.

Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point, commonly certain COM or ActiveX components. ltkrn90n.dll is an ordinary LEADTOOLS runtime library, not a DLL that should normally be repaired by registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 ltkrn90n.dll
as a routine response. It may produce an error such as a missing entry point, or it may distract from the real issue: a damaged installation, missing companion library, wrong version, or incompatible application.
Registration also does not copy a missing file, repair its dependencies, or make a 32-bit application use an arbitrary 64-bit DLL.
32-bit and 64-bit Windows considerations
A legacy Win32 program may run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64. That does not mean you should choose System32 or SysWOW64 yourself.
The correct location is determined by the application installer. Windows uses different filesystem and DLL-loading rules for 32-bit and 64-bit processes, and putting a file in the wrong system directory can create conflicts for other software.
Keep the runtime with the program that shipped it. Do not replace a similarly named ltkrn*.dll, use a newer LEADTOOLS release, or assume that a file with the same name has compatible exports.

Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website
A standalone download may contain:
- Malware or a tampered binary
- The wrong LEADTOOLS release
- The wrong architecture
- Missing companion files
- A file that loads but crashes later
- A binary unrelated to the application requesting it
Microsoft does not distribute ltkrn90n.dll as a standalone Windows system file. Use the affected application’s original installer, trusted installation media, verified backup, or the publisher’s legitimate distribution channel.
Do not copy it into System32
Application DLLs are normally searched for in the application directory. System-wide copying can create version conflicts and expand the impact of a compromised or mismatched file.

Do not use registry cleaners
A registry cleaner cannot reconstruct the LEADTOOLS runtime or determine which application release supplied it. It can also remove entries needed by old software.
Do not assume SFC will fix every DLL error
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally restore third-party application files.

Collect this information before escalating:
- The exact application name and version, if shown.
- The complete error message.
- Whether the error occurs during installation or startup.
- The requested file path, if displayed.
- The Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and architecture.
- Whether
ltdis90n.dllor other companion files are also missing. - The installer source being used.
- Recent antivirus quarantine history.
- Whether the application was moved, restored, cleaned, or updated recently.
- Whether other applications fail or only this one.
