Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, write down:
- The exact program that reports the error
- The complete error message
- Whether it happens at Windows startup or only when one application opens
- Whether Windows 11 or Windows 10 is installed
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem began after Windows Update, an application update, antivirus activity, or a crash

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstalllocationapi.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX file, or normal third-party runtime. It implements the legacy Windows Location API, a COM-based API that applications can use for location reports such as latitude, longitude, and civic-address information.
The safest repair is to repair Windows itself first. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random archive and copy it into System32 or the application folder.
Where locationapi.dll belongs
On a 64-bit Windows installation, the normal locations are:
- Native 64-bit copy:
%WINDIR%System32LocationApi.dll - 32-bit copy for 32-bit programs:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64LocationApi.dll
On 32-bit Windows, the normal location is:
%WINDIR%System32LocationApi.dll
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

A file with this name inside an application directory, Downloads, Temp, or a user profile is not automatically trustworthy. Check its path and Microsoft digital signature before treating it as genuine.
To check the file:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar and press Enter. - Find
LocationApi.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
Repeat the check in %WINDIR%SysWOW64 if the affected application is 32-bit. A Microsoft-signed file in the correct Windows directory is consistent with the genuine component. The file’s version and signature on the affected computer are more useful than an old online version table because Windows servicing can update system files.
What the error message means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because LocationApi.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because locationapi.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading locationapi.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting locationapi.dll.”
- “LocationApi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “LocationApi.dll could not be loaded.”
- “LocationApi.dll is corrupted.”
These are loader-message variations, not proof of one specific cause.
In particular, “The specified module could not be found” can mean that LocationApi.dll is absent. It can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL could not be loaded. A copied replacement may therefore leave the real problem untouched.

A temporary update or servicing failure can make a protected Windows component unavailable.
- Save your work and restart the computer.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Open the affected program again.
If the error remains, continue with the system-file repair below. If Windows Update itself reports an error, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter, then retry the repair.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary fix when LocationApi.dll is missing from its Windows directory, fails its signature check, or Windows reports that it is corrupt.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses to restore protected files.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them, or that no integrity violations were found. If the error disappears after restarting, the Windows component was the likely cause.
If SFC says it could not perform the requested operation, restart into normal Windows and try again from an administrator Terminal. If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture.
Repeating SFC without first addressing a damaged component store usually does not add anything. Run DISM first, then SFC, and record the final messages if the problem continues.
When manually tracking down component corruption means repeatedly guessing which repair changed the system, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and if only one application is affected, reinstalling that application remains the definitive fix.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows starts normally and only one program reports locationapi.dll, the application may have damaged files, an incompatible update, or an incorrect dependency.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
First use the application’s own repair feature:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and test it.
Some programs instead provide a Repair, Verify files, or Verify integrity command in their launcher. Use that command and allow it to replace damaged application files.
If no repair option exists:
- Close the program and its launcher.
- Back up any application-specific files or settings.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the software publisher or use its official launcher.
- Install the program again.
- Test it before restoring optional modifications or add-ons.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer or Windows installation into the application directory. A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program do not necessarily use the same binary architecture, and Windows system files are serviced as part of the operating system.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a file after an incorrect detection, or malware may have attempted to replace the genuine component.
Recommended Free Tools
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries related to
LocationApi.dll. - Open the detection details and note the file path.
- If the file is in a Windows system directory, verify its Microsoft digital signature before considering restoration.
- If it is in an application or user-writable directory, do not restore it automatically.
- Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection.
Restore a quarantined file only when the path, signature, and detection details establish that it is the genuine Microsoft system file and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that Defender can detect a restored file again unless it is explicitly allowed. If the file is counterfeit or unsigned, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies
A 64-bit Windows installation can legitimately contain both 64-bit and 32-bit copies.
Use the correct system copy for the program:
- A 64-bit application uses the native copy in
System32. - A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows uses the 32-bit copy in
SysWOW64.
Do not assume that copying the file into the program’s folder is the solution. If the message says “specified module could not be found” while the file exists, another dependency may be missing. The exact program name, its installation source, Windows build, and complete error text are needed to identify that dependency.

Visual C++ packages are relevant only when the actual message names a runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. There is no separate Microsoft locationapi.dll redistributable. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL download sites page associates it with this file is not a supported repair.

Fix 6: Update drivers only for a genuine location-device problem
Driver updates are not a primary repair for a missing Windows Location API DLL. Investigate drivers only when the application’s actual failure concerns a GPS receiver, sensor, location device, or related hardware.
To check a relevant device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Sensors, Network adapters, Bluetooth, or Ports, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the device disappeared after an update, open its Properties, check the Device status message, and use Roll Back Driver only when that option is available and the timing clearly connects the failure to the update.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs and matching versions across several device categories. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to show which drivers it identifies as stale; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. This is optional and does not replace DISM/SFC or application repair for a locationapi.dll loader error.
Does regsvr32 repair this DLL?
LocationApi.dll is associated with the COM-based Windows Location API and public inventories show registration-related exports. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains that the command registers DLLs exposing the appropriate entry point.
However, registration is not the normal repair for a missing or corrupt protected Windows component. It cannot recreate a deleted file, repair damaged binary contents, or restore a missing dependency.
Use it only when a specific COM-registration error has been diagnosed:

Frequently asked questions
Is locationapi.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes, when it is the Microsoft-signed Windows Location API component in the correct Windows system directory. A same-named file elsewhere requires separate investigation.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for LocationApi.dll itself. Install a runtime only when the actual application error identifies that runtime or the application’s official requirements call for it.
Can I download locationapi.dll?
Do not download it from an unaffiliated DLL archive. The safe sources are Windows servicing, DISM/SFC, Windows Update, Windows recovery, and the affected application’s official installer when the application itself is damaged.
Why are there copies in both System32 and SysWOW64?
A 64-bit Windows installation supports both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. System32 contains native 64-bit files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files.
Will SFC always fix the error?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files, but it cannot repair every application installation, missing dependency, architecture mismatch, malware infection, or hardware-related problem.
Should I update a GPS or sensor driver?
Only when the underlying problem involves that device. A missing or corrupt locationapi.dll is normally repaired through Windows component servicing, not Device Manager.
