Logitech’s CEO Floated a “Forever Mouse”—But It Isn’t a Product Yet

Logitech’s CEO discussed a hypothetical mouse that customers could keep for years through software upgrades—but no forever mouse or subscription product has been announced.

Logitech is not currently selling or announcing a “forever mouse.” Hanneke Faber discussed the idea during a July 29, 2024 episode of Decoder: a premium mouse bought once, kept useful through software upgrades, and potentially supported by paid features. That is a concept—not a confirmed product, specification, subscription plan, or release date.

The idea is especially provocative for gamers and PC users because a mouse is usually judged by its sensor, switches, latency, weight, and shape—not by whether it can become a long-term software platform.

What Logitech’s CEO actually proposed

Faber, who became Logitech’s CEO on December 1, 2023, discussed a hypothetical high-end mouse designed to remain useful for many years. The basic model would be simple: buy the hardware once, then receive new capabilities through software rather than replacing the entire device.

The discussion appeared in the July 29, 2024 episode of Decoder. The episode description presented the “forever mouse” as a concept and raised the possibility that some future software features could require a subscription. It did not announce a product, price, prototype, launch window, or finalized service plan.

Logitech M510 Full Size Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse
  • Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
  • You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

So the accurate summary is: Faber floated the idea of a long-lived, software-upgradable mouse; Logitech did not announce that one is coming.

“Forever” would have to mean more than firmware updates

A mouse cannot be genuinely long-lived simply because Logitech releases occasional software updates. Its physical components are still likely to fail first.

A credible long-life design would need several things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A replaceable or serviceable battery. Rechargeable batteries lose capacity over time, and an otherwise functional wireless mouse becomes difficult to keep using if its battery is sealed.
  • Replaceable click switches. Left- and right-click switches can develop double-clicking or missed-input problems long before a sensor becomes obsolete.
  • A serviceable scroll wheel and encoder. Scroll failures are another common reason to replace a mouse.
  • Available replacement feet, shells, batteries, switches, and receivers. Parts must remain obtainable for years, not merely exist in a repair manual.
  • Reasonable disassembly and repair documentation. A theoretically replaceable component is not very useful if opening the mouse destroys the shell or requires specialist equipment.
  • Standard connectivity and a fallback mode. USB-C charging, Bluetooth, a reliable receiver, and ideally wired operation would reduce dependence on one proprietary wireless component.

Without those commitments, “forever” would more accurately mean “software-supported for an unspecified period.” That could still be useful, but it is not the same as a product designed to survive generations of owners.

The software questions matter just as much

Software could extend a mouse’s useful life, but it could also turn ownership into a recurring payment relationship. Any future Logitech announcement would need to answer questions such as:

  • Does the mouse work fully without an account or internet connection?
  • Are button remapping, sensitivity settings, macros, and profile switching free?
  • Are new features sold as one-time upgrades or locked behind a subscription?
  • What happens when a subscription expires?
  • Will firmware updates remain available after Logitech stops selling the mouse?
  • Will Logitech Options+ or G Hub continue supporting it on future versions of Windows and macOS?
  • Can the device operate if Logitech’s cloud services are discontinued?
  • Can a buyer transfer paid features when selling the mouse?

These distinctions are important. A subscription for optional automation or AI tools is different from a subscription required for basic button remapping. A one-time paid upgrade is different from an ongoing fee. Cloud-based features are different again, because they may stop working even when the physical mouse is perfectly healthy.

Why Logitech might want a forever mouse

There are two obvious reasons to explore the concept.

The first is sustainability. Extending the useful life of a peripheral could reduce manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and electronic waste. Logitech said in its FY24 impact materials that it was targeting a 50% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 against its stated baseline, and reported that three-quarters of its products used recycled “Next Life Plastics.” Logitech’s FY24 announcement and impact report provide that corporate context.

Logitech G305 Lightspeed Wireless Gaming Mouse - Black
  • The next-generation optical HERO sensor delivers incredible performance and up to 10x the power efficiency over previous generations, with 400 IPS precision and up to 12,000 DPI sensitivity
  • Ultra-fast LIGHTSPEED wireless technology gives you a lag-free gaming experience, delivering incredible responsiveness and reliability with 1 ms report rate for competition-level performance
  • G305 wireless mouse boasts an incredible 250 hours of continuous gameplay on just 1 AA battery; switch to Endurance mode via Logitech G HUB software and extend battery life up to 9 months
  • Wireless does not have to mean heavy, G305 lightweight mouse provides high maneuverability coming in at only 3.4 oz thanks to efficient lightweight mechanical design and ultra-efficient battery usage
  • The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere

Those goals do not prove that a future mouse would be repairable or environmentally superior. A more complex product may require additional electronics, sensors, processors, batteries, and radios. The environmental case depends on whether the product actually stays in use for substantially longer than an ordinary mouse.

The second reason is revenue. A customer who buys one durable mouse may not buy another for many years. A higher initial price, paid software upgrades, accessories, or subscriptions could give Logitech continuing income while reducing replacement sales.

That tension is why the proposal attracted so much attention. A long-lasting product could be better for waste reduction, but recurring fees could make the customer feel that they own the hardware while merely renting its most useful features.

Why gamers and PC users are skeptical

Most users expect core mouse functions to belong to the hardware they purchased. Cursor movement, clicking, scrolling, sensitivity, and wireless operation are not usually viewed as ongoing services.

Logitech M705 Marathon Full Size 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse - Black
  • Click more. Scroll more. Do more. Logitech Marathon Mouse M705 uses far less power than comparable wireless mice from other companies. That means you can go up to three full years between battery changes.*
  • Hyper-fast scrolling lets you fly through long documents and Web pages with a single spin of a nearly frictionless metal scroll wheel.
  • The sculpted, right-hand shape guides your hand to a naturally comfortable position and places customizable control within your reach. Two thumb buttons lets you move quickly between Web pages.**
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There's no need to unplug it when you move around, so there's less worry of it being broken or lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
  • Laser grade tracking delivers smooth, responsive, precise cursor control on surfaces that cause problems for standard optical mice, such as polished or wood-grain tables.***

Logitech already relies on configuration software for many advanced features, including profiles and customization. That makes it reasonable for users to ask whether a future “forever mouse” would preserve those functions locally or make them dependent on Logitech’s account and software ecosystem.

The concern is even sharper for gaming mice. Competitive players may replace a mouse because of switch wear, battery degradation, a damaged cable, changed ergonomic preferences, or newer sensor and wireless technology. Software upgrades cannot solve all of those problems. A mouse with a sealed battery and non-serviceable switches could become unusable while its software remains fully supported.

There is also a trade-off between longevity and innovation. A fixed design may remain comfortable and accurate for years, but newer mice may offer lower weight, improved wireless performance, different shapes, better accessibility options, or more efficient sensors. “Forever” should not imply that customers will never have a reason to upgrade.

A practical test for any future announcement

If Logitech ever turns the idea into a real product, these are the questions that matter more than the marketing name:

Logitech M317 Compact Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse - Blue
  • Easy Navigation, Precise Control: Logitech M317 wireless mouse features line-by-line scrolling and smooth optical tracking for accurate cursor control on most surfaces
  • Long-lasting Battery Life: This cordless computer mouse can last for a whole year without having to change the batteries (1)
  • Comfortable, Compact Design: With soft rubber grips and contoured shape, this computer mouse feels comfortable in either your right or left hand
  • Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug the USB receiver into your laptop or PC and start working in seconds; the receiver provides a strong, reliable wireless connection within up to 33 feet (3)
  • Versatile and Compact: This small and portable external mouse is compatible with Windows, macOS, Chrome OS and Linux, and the compact size and shape fits easily in your laptop case or in a bag
  1. Can the battery be replaced? Check whether Logitech sells the part or provides an affordable service.
  2. Can the switches and scroll encoder be replaced? Look for official parts, repair instructions, or a documented replacement program.
  3. How long is software support guaranteed? “Lifetime” is not meaningful without a defined support period and clear terms.
  4. Does it work offline? Core pointer, click, scroll, and sensitivity functions should not depend on cloud authentication.
  5. Which features are free? Basic configuration should not unexpectedly become a subscription benefit.
  6. What happens if Logitech ends the service? The mouse should retain its essential functions if servers or account systems disappear.
  7. Are replacement parts actually affordable? A battery or switch kit priced close to a new mouse does not create practical repairability.
  8. Will future operating systems support it? Long-term compatibility should cover Logitech’s configuration software, firmware tools, Bluetooth, and receivers.
  9. Can the wireless receiver be replaced? A lost or discontinued proprietary receiver should not condemn the entire mouse.
  10. Is the total cost lower over time? A premium upfront price plus years of subscriptions may cost more than replacing conventional mice.

What this means if you need a mouse now

There is no confirmed “forever mouse” to wait for based on the available evidence. Buyers should choose current hardware for its actual qualities rather than treating an existing Logitech product as a guaranteed long-term platform.

For productivity, the MX Master 3S emphasizes customization, ergonomics, and multi-device use. The Lift Vertical Ergonomic Mouse targets users who prefer a smaller vertical shape, while the M575 suits people who prefer a thumb trackball and reduced arm movement. Logitech’s G gaming mice focus more directly on weight, latency, sensors, and competitive performance.

None of those products should be called “forever” without model-specific evidence about battery service, switch replacement, parts availability, and support duration.

Shoppers prioritizing longevity can also consider wired mice, models with replaceable AA or AAA batteries, products with documented switch-replacement ecosystems, and trackballs with readily serviceable contact surfaces. Those categories may remove particular failure points, but they are not automatically more sustainable; durability and support still need to be verified for the individual model.

What is—and is not—happening

The “forever mouse” story began with a provocative interview idea, not a product announcement. Logitech has not, in the supplied evidence, confirmed a commercial mouse with that name, a subscription requirement, a price, a preorder, or indefinite parts and software support.

The meaningful test is therefore not whether a mouse can receive new software features. It is whether Logitech would build one that remains repairable, functional offline, compatible with future computers, and useful after the company stops selling it or charging for its optional services.
