Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorslogprovider.dll is a Microsoft Windows component used by the DISM Logging Provider. If logprovider.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Windows component store rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file normally belongs to Windows servicing infrastructure, not to a game, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, or a particular third-party application. DISM may load it from C:WindowsSystem32DismLogProvider.dll, a WinSxS component, installation media, or a temporary directory created during servicing.
Identify the file before repairing it
Microsoft servicing records include LogProvider.dll in Windows update packages, including current 64-bit Windows packages. The architecture and build depend on the Windows release and servicing environment.
| Item | What it means |
|---|---|
| File | LogProvider.dll or logprovider.dll |
| Component | Windows DISM servicing infrastructure |
| Typical path | C:WindowsSystem32DismLogProvider.dll |
| Other paths | WinSxS, matching installation media, or a temporary DISM directory |
| Architecture | Depends on the Windows release, image, and servicing environment |
| Safe source | Windows Update, Windows recovery tools, SFC/DISM, or matching Microsoft installation media |
A temporary path in a DISM log does not automatically mean the permanent file is missing. DISM can stage providers in temporary folders while it works.

Authentic log entries can include:
Failed to load the provider:
C:WindowsSystem32DismLogProvider.dll.
Failed to get the logger provider
Some logs also warn:
There is a possible 32-bit versus 64-bit cross architecture issue with the provider (or one of its dependencies).
HRESULT 0x800700C1 can indicate an incompatible image, architecture mismatch, or incompatible servicing file.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates first
A failed or interrupted update can leave the component store incomplete. Start with Windows Update, then restart before running repairs.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates in Update & Security.
- Install every available quality, servicing, or cumulative update.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not require it.
- Try the original update, upgrade, reset, or recovery operation again.
If the same logprovider.dll error returns, continue with DISM. Do not repeatedly retry a failed update without repairing the component store.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing, damaged, or incompatible DISM provider.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when it completes.
DISM normally obtains replacement component files through Windows Update. A successful result usually ends with wording such as:
The restore operation completed successfully.
The operation completed successfully.
If DISM reports that it repaired the image, run System File Checker afterward.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The useful results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and retry the original operation.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: inspect the CBS log and continue with the matching-source repair below.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source.
Manually hunting through Windows folders and repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC commands remain the primary repair path.
Fix 3: Give DISM a matching Windows repair source
Use this method when DISM says it cannot find source files, cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, or ends with an error such as 0x800f081f.
You need Windows installation media or another repair source from the same Windows version and build family. Do not use a random ISO or files copied from a different release.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Then run:
sfc /scannow
To use installation media:
- Obtain matching Windows installation media from Microsoft.
- Mount the ISO by double-clicking it in File Explorer.
- Note its drive letter, such as
E:. - Check whether the media contains
install.wimorinstall.esdunder thesourcesfolder. - Use the Windows installation source appropriate to that media and edition.
- Run DISM with the source path, for example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:E:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
The exact image index may need to be specified when the WIM contains multiple editions. Microsoft’s Repair a Windows Image documentation explains the index and source syntax.
The source must match the installed Windows environment closely. A mismatched source can cause more servicing errors or produce the architecture warning associated with 0x800700C1.
Fix 4: Check architecture and file paths
Do not decide whether a DLL is correct from its filename alone. Modern Microsoft packages include 64-bit Windows versions, while older public listings also show 32-bit files. The correct file depends on the Windows image being serviced.
Check the failure context:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32Dism. - Look for
LogProvider.dll. - Do not replace it if it exists merely because a log also mentions a temporary copy.
- Open Event Viewer if the failure includes an application or servicing event.
- Review the DISM log at:
C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log
Also review:
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log
Look for the process that attempted to load the provider, the path used, and whether the log reports a 32-bit/64-bit cross-architecture problem.
Use the DISM executable supplied by the installed Windows environment. Avoid mixing binaries or provider files from another computer, an older Windows release, or an unrelated installation image.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can remove or quarantine a Windows component, although there is no evidence that a particular antivirus product commonly misidentifies this file.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items and their full paths.
- Restore a file only when its path and signature identify it as a legitimate Microsoft Windows component.
- Run a full scan after restoring it.
Do not trust a file solely because it is named LogProvider.dll. A copy in a user-writable temporary folder may be a legitimate DISM staging file, but malware can also use familiar names. If the file has an unexpected publisher, location, or digital-signature status, leave it quarantined and investigate the system instead.
Fix 6: Repair from Windows Recovery Environment
Use offline repair when Windows will not boot normally or DISM itself cannot start.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Recovery on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Update & Security, then Recovery.
- Under advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, then Command Prompt.
- Determine the Windows drive letter. In recovery mode it may not be
C:. - Run offline repair, adjusting
D:to the correct Windows drive:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then run:
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows
Restart after both commands complete. If the commands repeatedly fail, inspect the DISM and CBS logs from the offline Windows directory and consider disk or filesystem corruption.
Fix 7: Investigate disk corruption or a failed update
Repeated DISM and SFC failures can indicate more than one damaged DLL. They may involve a corrupted component store, interrupted update, damaged temporary directory, or filesystem problem.
Check these conditions:
- The computer lost power during an update.
- Windows Update repeatedly rolls back.
- DISM fails with different errors on every attempt.
- Files disappear from protected Windows folders.
- The disk reports read or write errors.
- The CBS log contains recurring failures for multiple components.
Back up important files first. Then use the recovery options available on the computer. System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a recent update, driver installation, or system change and a restore point exists. An in-place Windows repair installation is appropriate when Windows still runs but component repair remains unsuccessful after using a matching source.

Drivers are usually not the cause
logprovider.dll is a DISM provider, not a display, audio, chipset, or printer driver. Updating drivers will not normally replace or repair it. Consider drivers only when the DISM log identifies a separate driver failure or the broader Windows problem began immediately after a driver change.
If you do need to check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device error.
- Use Driver, then Roll Back Driver or Update Driver when appropriate.
- Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver source.
Finding the one stale driver among many devices can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; the free scan identifies findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It is not a substitute for repairing the Windows component store when DISM is the actual failing component.
What not to do
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect build, an incompatible architecture, or a file missing required dependencies. Copying a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application folder often hides the symptom without repairing Windows servicing.
The supported sources are Windows Update, SFC and DISM, matching Microsoft installation media, Windows Recovery Environment, System Restore, or a Windows repair installation.

LogProvider.dll is a DISM provider, not a normal ActiveX or COM component that users register manually. Running regsvr32 can produce an “entry point not found” or similar error and does not repair the component store.
Do not assume every popup is genuine
A third-party website or program may display a generic “logprovider.dll is missing” message without actually invoking Windows DISM. Verify the process, file path, and DISM or CBS logs. If the message appears only when one application starts, check whether that application bundled its own copy or is producing a misleading diagnostic.
FAQ
Is logprovider.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with the Microsoft DISM Logging Provider and is included in Windows servicing packages.
Should I copy it from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows release, build, edition, architecture, or servicing state. Repair Windows using DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or matching Microsoft media instead.
Why does the error mention a temporary folder?
DISM can stage providers in temporary directories during an operation. That message alone does not prove the permanent copy under System32Dism is missing.
Is logprovider.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
It varies by Windows release and servicing environment. Do not choose a file based only on an old version table or filename.
What if DISM reports 0x800700C1?
Check for a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, incompatible installation media, mixed DISM files, or a damaged image. Run DISM from the installed Windows environment and use a matching repair source.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use System Restore when a recent system change caused the problem. Use an in-place repair installation when matching-source DISM, SFC, and Windows Update repair do not restore servicing. A clean installation should be a later choice after backing up personal data.
