Lollipop Land Recreated Android 5.0’s Easter Egg—but the Original App Is Now Delisted

Lollipop Land was a real standalone Android game, released by JRummy Apps in November 2014. It adapted Android 5.0’s hidden Flappy Bird-style mini-game, adding difficulty settings, characters, sounds and score features. It is not Google’s system Easter egg, and it is no longer listed on Google Play: AppBrain records its removal on December 24, 2021.

The original launch coverage dates to November 7, 2014. Any “download” advice today must therefore distinguish the historical Play Store release from unofficial APK copies whose authenticity, safety and compatibility cannot be established.

What Lollipop Land was

Lollipop Land was developed by JRummy Apps and published as an independently installed game. Its core mechanic came from Android 5.0 Lollipop’s hidden Easter egg: guide the Android mascot, Bugdroid, between lollipop-shaped obstacles in a side-scrolling game inspired by Flappy Bird.

Jared Rummler wrote that the first version was built and published in less than a day after Android 5.0 source became available to AOSP. The developer’s account is available at jaredrummler.com/blog/lollipop-land.

That makes Lollipop Land an adaptation of Google’s system software, not an official Google game.

How it differed from Android 5.0’s built-in Easter egg

Android 5.0 Easter egg Lollipop Land
Included in Android 5.0 system software Separate app from JRummy Apps
Bugdroid flying between lollipop barriers Same basic gameplay, with additional game options
Available only on suitable Android 5.0-era software Advertised as backward-compatible with older Android versions
System Easter egg rather than a normal Play Store app Originally distributed through Google Play

Reported additions included five difficulty settings, multiple playable characters, sound effects, Google Play Games integration, leaderboards, achievements and an option to make the app the device’s default Easter egg. Archived metadata lists 11 characters, while launch coverage from Phandroid mentioned 21 levels and randomly selected characters. Those counts may describe different releases or metadata versions, so they should not be treated as one confirmed specification.

How to open the original Lollipop Easter egg

These instructions apply to Android 5.0-era devices. Manufacturers changed menu names, and current Android releases do not necessarily include this game.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open About phone (sometimes under a system-information menu).
  3. Find Android version.
  4. Tap the Android version repeatedly until the Lollipop graphic appears.
  5. Tap the Lollipop several times, then press and hold it to launch the mini-game. Rummler’s description specifies six taps followed by a long press.

Android compatibility and launch-era claims

JRummy’s early description said the game was back-ported to Android 4.0 and later. The archived AppBrain listing records Android 4.1 or newer instead. The safest conclusion is that older Android support was intended, but the exact minimum depended on the build:

  • Developer claim: Android 4.0+.
  • Archived listing requirement: Android 4.1+.
  • Current phones: compatibility is unknown and should not be assumed.

The app was historically listed as free. The 2014 launch report said it had no advertisements, permissions or in-app purchases, but later archived metadata says it contained ads and requested six permissions. That discrepancy may reflect a later build or changed metadata; it is not evidence that every APK has the launch version’s behavior.

Is Lollipop Land still available?

There is no current official Google Play listing established by the available records. AppBrain’s archive identifies the package as com.jrummyapps.lollipopland, with version 2.5.0 last listed as updated on September 18, 2019, and removed from Google Play on December 24, 2021.

Should you install an APK copy?

Third-party repositories may display version 2.5.0, but hosting the package does not prove that a copy is original, unmodified, malware-free or authorized. Listings such as APKPure and Phoneky are not official Google distribution channels.

If you decide to investigate a copy, treat it as abandoned legacy software:

  • Prefer an authenticated archive or a source that can demonstrate provenance.
  • Compare the package name and, where possible, the signing certificate with a known original.
  • Scan the file and inspect requested permissions before installation.
  • Do not casually weaken Android’s security controls to bypass an unknown-source warning.
  • Use a test device or emulator rather than a primary phone when practical.
  • Remove the app if it crashes, requests unexpected access or triggers signing and integrity warnings.

An app designed for Android 4.x and 5.0 may fail on modern Android because of changed security rules, obsolete libraries, architecture differences or deprecated Google Play Services. Its historical leaderboards, achievements and Google+ or Play Games functions should not be expected to work in 2026.

What to use instead

For the original Android experience

Use an Android 5.0 emulator or a compatible archival device in a controlled environment. This reproduces the system Easter egg without relying on an unverified APK.

For similar gameplay

A current, maintained Flappy Bird-style game can provide the same obstacle-dodging idea, but it is not an official successor to Lollipop Land or Google’s Easter egg.

For Android history

Keep the archived package information and developer account as historical references, while treating any installation as optional preservation work rather than a supported consumer download.

Verdict

Lollipop Land was a clever 2014 standalone recreation of Android 5.0’s hidden game. It offered more modes and progression than the built-in Easter egg, but the original Play Store listing is gone, the final compatibility is uncertain, and unofficial APK mirrors cannot be recommended as safe or official downloads.
