Long Path Fixer Tool: Safe Ways to Resolve Windows “Path Too Long” Errors

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Long Path Fixer Tool is the name of an old SourceForge listing, but the available record does not establish a current maintainer, release, security audit, or supported download. Treat it as an unidentified utility rather than a verified recommendation. Windows itself can support paths far longer than the traditional limit, but only when the application and configuration both opt in. For an immediate, lower-risk fix, shorten parent folders, move the files nearer the drive root, or use an application documented as long-path aware.

What “Long Path Fixer Tool” refers to

The exact-name Long Path Fixer Tool appears in a SourceForge listing. That listing is old and does not establish who maintains the software today, which version is current, when it was last released, whether it is safe, or what support policy applies. Those gaps matter because a path-management program can request broad file-system access and may be used to delete, rename, or copy large groups of files.

Do not assume that this listing is the same product as the separately branded Long Path Tool. The available evidence does not prove that the two names identify one application. If you are considering any utility, obtain it only from a source that clearly identifies the publisher, current version, release date, supported operating systems, code-signing status, and licensing terms. Scan the installer with your normal security controls and test it on a disposable copy of data before using batch operations.

Why Windows reports that a path is too long

A Windows path is the complete address, not just the final filename. It includes the drive or share, every folder name, every backslash separator, and the filename with its extension. A collection of individually reasonable names can therefore exceed the limit after many folders are nested beneath a long project or cloud-sync root.

Microsoft documents the traditional Win32 MAX_PATH constant as 260 characters. It also documents Unicode extended-length paths of approximately 32,767 characters when an application uses the \? prefix and compatible APIs. The larger figure is a capability of a specific API path, not a promise that every Windows program can open, display, copy, or delete such a file.

Windows path behavior What the figure means Qualification
260 characters The traditional MAX_PATH limit Microsoft’s 2024 documentation describes this as the common Win32 limit.
Approximately 32,767 characters Extended-length Unicode paths Requires the \? prefix and APIs that support it.
400 characters Decoded OneDrive and SharePoint paths Microsoft Support lists this as a separate cloud-service limit.
520 characters OneDrive sync’s combined local path and root-folder length This is a sync-specific combined limit, not a general NTFS limit.

Windows 10 version 1607 and later removed MAX_PATH limitations from many common Win32 file and directory functions, according to Microsoft. The removal is opt-in: the operating system setting must be enabled, and the application must declare that it is long-path aware. A program compiled against older assumptions can still fail at 260 characters even when the underlying file system and Windows installation can handle more.

Enable Windows long-path support for compatible applications

This configuration helps only applications that have been modified to use the feature. It does not convert every older program into a long-path application.

Set the registry value

  1. Sign in with an account allowed to change system settings, and close the application that is failing.
  2. Open Registry Editor by pressing Win+R, entering regedit, and confirming the elevation prompt.
  3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem.
  4. Find the DWORD value LongPathsEnabled. Set its value data to 1. If the value does not exist, create a new 32-bit DWORD with that exact name, then set it to 1.
  5. Close Registry Editor. Restart Windows, or at minimum restart the affected application and any process that may have cached the setting. Microsoft notes that the setting can be cached per process, so a reboot is the dependable way to ensure a fresh process reads it.

Use the policy setting when your Windows edition exposes it

In Local Group Policy Editor, the policy is named Enable Win32 long paths under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem. Set it to Enabled, apply the policy, and restart the affected applications. A managed business computer may receive this setting from domain policy instead; do not overwrite organizational policy without approval.

Confirm application support

The application must include a manifest entry named longPathAware. Microsoft’s requirement is important: enabling LongPathsEnabled changes behavior only for applications that were modified and manifested for long paths. If the program has no documentation, update channel, or manifest information, assume it may still be limited to 260 characters. File Explorer, Office desktop applications, scripts, archive tools, backup programs, and game launchers can each have different support even on the same computer.

Why this setting does not automatically fix File Explorer

Long-path support is a chain of capabilities. The file system must store the object, Windows must permit the relevant API calls, and the application must pass and display long paths correctly. The registry or Group Policy switch addresses only the Windows opt-in portion. It does not retrofit File Explorer, Office, or another legacy application that still allocates fixed-size path buffers or rejects extended syntax.

That is why two actions can produce different results: a modern, long-path-aware tool may copy a directory successfully, while Explorer fails when you browse to the same directory; a command-line program may rename a file that an older graphical utility cannot see. Enabling the setting is worthwhile for supported software, but it is not evidence that every workflow is repaired.

Lower-risk ways to recover a file before installing a utility

Shorten the parent folders

Rename verbose project, customer, date, or version folders to concise names. Removing a few characters at several levels can bring the complete path below the application’s limit without changing the file itself. Preserve a mapping or note if other programs depend on the original folder names.

Move the work closer to the drive root

Copy or move the affected tree to a short location such as a top-level working folder on the same drive, then perform the rename, deletion, extraction, or update there. This removes the length contributed by the original parent folders. Verify that the destination has enough space and that permissions, timestamps, and ownership requirements are preserved before deleting the original.

Reduce nesting and archive structure

Flatten unnecessary layers, shorten generated identifiers, and avoid putting a deeply nested project inside another deeply nested synchronization folder. If an archive extractor fails, extract to a short destination first and then reorganize the files. An archive can contain paths that are longer than the destination program can create, so changing the extraction location may be enough.

Use a known long-path-aware application

For a one-time operation, a current tool whose documentation explicitly states long-path support may be safer than downloading an unidentified executable. Check whether it can perform the exact operation you need—copy, delete, rename, archive extraction, or network access—and whether it preserves ACLs, ownership, timestamps, and reparse points.

What a dedicated long-path utility may provide

A separately branded commercial product called Long Path Tool advertises support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its download page claims deletion, copying, renaming, bulk renaming, path scanning, mapped-network-folder handling, OneDrive and Dropbox copying, ACL and ownership copying, multithreading, PowerShell support, and a command-line version. These are vendor claims, not independent test results, and they do not establish what the exact SourceForge-listed Long Path Fixer Tool can do.

Its FAQ also claims support for destination, source, and path-too-long errors; long-path archive extraction; and copying multiple folders. The FAQ says registered users, unlike trial users, can delete, copy, and rename long-path files and folders. Check the current terms before relying on those restrictions because trial behavior, supported versions, and licensing can change.

Choose the right fix for the failure you see

Explorer cannot open, rename, or delete the item

  • First shorten a parent folder or move the tree to a short root-level location.
  • If the operation still fails, use an application documented as long-path aware after enabling the Windows setting.
  • Do not assume a utility can remove a file that is locked, controlled by permissions, or held open by another process; path length and access errors can look similar.

An application still reports 260 characters after the setting is enabled

  • Confirm that the process was restarted after changing the registry or policy.
  • Check whether the application declares longPathAware and whether its own documentation supports extended paths.
  • Test the same operation in a different, current tool. If only the old application fails, its compatibility—not the Windows setting—is the limiting factor.

Cloud synchronization fails

  • Measure the decoded path and the local sync path separately. OneDrive and SharePoint have a 400-character decoded-path limit, while OneDrive sync also lists a 520-character combined local-path-and-root limit.
  • Shorten the sync root and folder names, then allow the client to rescan before retrying.
  • Do not infer that a locally successful copy will synchronize; cloud-service limits remain separate from Windows long-path support.

A network or mapped-drive operation fails

  • Check whether the application supports the share type and extended paths; Windows configuration alone does not add that support.
  • Test a short local destination to distinguish a network-access problem from a path-length problem.
  • Preserve permissions and ownership when moving data between shares, and confirm that the destination server has its own path and naming limits.

Safety checklist before using any fixer

  • Identify the publisher and obtain the installer from a verifiable current source.
  • Check the release date, digital signature, supported Windows versions, and whether the software is still maintained.
  • Back up the affected data before bulk rename, copy, or delete actions.
  • Start with a small test folder and confirm the result, permissions, timestamps, and file contents.
  • Review trial and registered-user restrictions before depending on a paid operation.
  • Use the least privilege necessary and remove the utility if you cannot verify its origin or behavior.

The practical decision is straightforward: use Windows’ long-path setting for a documented, compatible application; use shorter paths as the universal workaround; and treat the old Long Path Fixer Tool listing as an identity that still needs verification, not as proof of a safe or current download.
