Becky Chambers’s As You Wake, Break the Shell is a science-fiction love story set on Fortune, a colony world where survival is precarious. Cora pilots an alien animal called Colibri to quarry water, while a dangerous condition tied to their bond puts her at risk. Botanist Signy may be able to help with bio-printed medicine—but doing so could endanger her livelihood and the colonists who rely on her.
What is As You Wake, Break the Shell about?
Hachette UK describes Fortune as a world with a poisonous atmosphere that is barely fit for life. Water is essential to the colony, and Cora’s work involves piloting Colibri, an alien animal used to quarry it. The bond between Cora and Colibri is also connected to a dangerous condition that threatens her.

Signy, a botanist, may have access to bio-printed medicine that could save Cora. But helping her carries consequences: Signy risks her livelihood, and the colonists who depend on her work could be affected too. The central tension is therefore both intimate and communal: how much risk can one person take for someone she loves when others’ survival may be involved?
Is it a romance?
Yes. Hachette UK frames the novel as a love story, with relationships extending beyond romance to siblings, humanity, the worlds people inhabit, and connections across difference. NetGalley’s advance-reader catalogue and reviewer material describe Cora and Signy’s relationship as a “sapphic romance”; that is catalogue and reviewer framing, rather than an author interview or a claim of critical consensus.
