If the new Resident Evil movie left you wanting more survival horror, start with Alien: Isolation, Outlast, or Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. They recreate the movie’s appeal in different ways: Alien: Isolation is about stealth against a relentless pursuer, Outlast makes you flee and hide while unarmed, and Resident Evil 7 delivers the closest connection to the Resident Evil universe with an ordinary protagonist and an immersive first-person viewpoint.

Three different answers to the same question

These recommendations are not three versions of the same experience. They divide survival-horror tension into three distinct forms of vulnerability. In Alien: Isolation, you are trapped in cramped spaces with a threat that cannot be solved by simply shooting it. Outlast strips away weapons almost entirely, making escape and concealment your main options. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard combines a vulnerable, relatively ordinary lead with the franchise’s established survival-horror identity.

That distinction matters if what you loved about the film was not just monsters or gore, but the feeling that an unprepared person is trying to stay alive under pressure. Director Zach Cregger described that preference in a quote relayed by Polygon’s Matt Patches: “I’d rather watch a movie starring a schlub who’s, like, out of shape and has never fired a gun before.” The three games below turn that kind of protagonist vulnerability into interactive systems rather than a passive story beat.

1. Alien: Isolation — choose this for stealth and relentless pursuit

Why it matches the movie’s survival pressure

Alien: Isolation places Amanda Ripley in a hostile, enclosed environment where the central threat is a persistent alien. The game’s tension comes from being functionally helpless: you may have limited ammunition and tools, but the alien remains a danger you cannot reliably defeat in a conventional firefight. You survive by reading the space around you, staying quiet and deciding when movement is safer than waiting.

That makes it the strongest choice for viewers who responded to the film’s close-quarters suspense. Corridors, rooms and service areas become tactical problems. A hiding place can buy time, but it does not remove the threat. The pressure comes from pursuit itself: every attempt to progress risks attracting attention, and every delay can leave you with fewer safe options.

What you actually do

  • Use stealth first. Sneaking and avoiding detection are more dependable than trying to fight through every encounter.
  • Manage scarcity. Limited ammunition and equipment force you to decide which threats deserve a response and which should be bypassed.
  • Read confined spaces. Ventilation routes, rooms and cover are part of the survival problem, not just scenery.
  • Accept pursuit as the loop. The alien’s presence turns ordinary movement into a risk calculation rather than a simple trip from one objective to the next.

This is the game to pick when “I cannot overpower the monster” is the feature you want most. It is less about feeling like an action hero and more about learning how to remain unseen long enough to reach the next safe opportunity.

Do not confuse it with the announced sequel

SEGA announced Alien: Isolation 2 on June 8, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC (Steam). That announcement gave no release date or price; both were listed as to be determined. The recommendation here is the original Alien: Isolation, not the separate sequel announcement. Verify the platform and edition of the original in your region before purchasing.

Capcom Resident Evil Village Gold Edition (PS5)
  • A New Perspective – See the eighth core entry in the Resident Evil series from a new vantage point in “Third Person Mode.” In addition to the intense first-person view players enjoyed in the initial release of Resident Evil Village, they can now watch Ethan in action and experience his journey from a new angle in Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion.
  • Bonus Game – Resident Evil Village will provide access to a free multiplayer experience titled Resident Evil Re:Verse, which releases on Oct. 28, 2022 alongside the launch of Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion. An all-star cast of iconic characters face off in four to six-player deathmatch battles in classic locations.
  • Evolution of Combat – In addition to engaging enemies, in Resident Evil Village Ethan can guard against incoming assaults, or kick foes away to buy time, allowing players to strategize the best approach for surviving the challenges ahead.
  • Popular Features Return – Recognizable features return Resident Evil Village that nod to previous Resident Evil titles, such as “The Duke,” a merchant who allows players to buy and sell items, purchase recipes for crafting, and customize weapons.
  • The Story Continues – “Shadows of Rose” resumes the Winters family saga 16 years after the events of Resident Evil Village. The expansion’s new tale follows Rose Winters, the daughter of main protagonist Ethan, as she struggles with her terrifying powers. Explore the warped and twisted world inside the consciousness of the Megamycete in search of a cure.

2. Outlast — choose this for unarmed escape and hiding

Why helplessness is the point

Outlast is the clearest match if the movie’s appeal came from watching an untrained person confront something far beyond his preparation. You play journalist Miles Upshur, who investigates Mount Massive Asylum. Red Barrels’ official description classifies the game as survival horror and frames the investigation around uncovering the truth while finding a way out.

Miles is unarmed. When danger appears, your practical choices are to run, hide or create enough distance to continue investigating. That changes the emotional rhythm from “which weapon should I use?” to “where can I disappear, and can I get there before I am seen?” The absence of a conventional combat solution keeps attention on routes, timing and the cost of being noticed.

How its tension works

  1. Enter a threatening location with an investigative goal. Progress depends on finding information and a route through the asylum rather than clearing rooms of enemies.
  2. Use observation to plan movement. You need to identify where danger is coming from and which spaces can conceal you.
  3. Run when hiding is no longer viable. Pursuit sequences turn navigation into a short-term escape problem.
  4. Return to investigation after the chase. The game alternates between searching for the truth and surviving the consequences of that search.

Choose Outlast if you want the protagonist’s lack of training and weapons to remain central. It is not the pick for players who want to solve every threat with equipment. Its identity is built around exposure, concealment and the fear that the next open space may leave you nowhere to go.

Who should skip it

If you need a large arsenal, frequent combat or a protagonist who quickly becomes capable of handling every enemy, Outlast may feel intentionally restrictive. That restriction is the design: the game’s survival-horror premise depends on the fact that Miles cannot simply stand his ground.

3. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — choose this for the closest franchise connection

Why it is the natural follow-up

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the direct choice when you want to stay inside the franchise rather than move to a different horror universe. Capcom’s materials identify both the standard game and a Gold Edition. The game uses a first-person perspective intended to create an immersive horror experience, placing the player close to an ordinary protagonist’s uncertainty instead of presenting events from a distant camera angle.

The connection to the movie is therefore twofold. You get the recognizable Resident Evil identity, but the lead is not framed as an unstoppable professional. The result is survival horror that emphasizes vulnerability, discovery and pressure before giving you confidence in your surroundings.

What makes its perspective important

  • First-person proximity: threats occupy your immediate field of view, making rooms and encounters feel personal rather than observed from a detached angle.
  • An ordinary-person viewpoint: the story’s tension begins with a protagonist who is not introduced as a hardened action specialist.
  • Survival-horror priorities: exploration, danger management and uncertainty remain central even as the game provides more conventional tools than Outlast.
  • Series continuity: it is the only recommendation here that directly extends the Resident Evil setting and branding.

Capcom reported that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard had shipped over 10 million units worldwide in a press release dated October 11, 2021. “Shipped” is the company’s wording for that 2021 milestone; it is not a current sales total. Separately, Capcom’s official Resident Evil portal states that the series has surpassed 100 million copies, but the page does not provide a publication year for that figure.

Standard game or Gold Edition?

Capcom lists a base title and a Gold Edition, but the included content and platform availability can differ. Treat the edition name as a starting point, then confirm the store listing for your region and device. If you want the most direct franchise-adjacent recommendation from this list, search for the exact title Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and check whether the listed version is the standard release or Gold Edition before checkout.

How to choose in under a minute

Pick Alien: Isolation if you want the monster to hunt you

Select it when the dominant fantasy is surviving a pursuit you cannot safely end. Its claustrophobic spaces, stealth emphasis and limited ammunition make every encounter a question of detection, timing and escape.

Pick Outlast if you want to be completely outmatched

Select it when an unarmed investigator is the part of the movie’s appeal you want to preserve. Running and hiding are not temporary inconveniences; they are the main ways Miles stays alive while investigating Mount Massive Asylum.

Pick Resident Evil 7 if you want the series connection

Select it when you want the closest link to Resident Evil itself, plus first-person immersion and a vulnerable protagonist. It is the most obvious starting point for viewers who want their next game to feel like a continuation of the same broad fictional tradition.

Practical buying checks before you start

  • Confirm your hardware. The original games’ current storefront editions and backward-compatibility options vary by platform and region; do not assume an edition listed for one device transfers to another.
  • Check the edition name. For Resident Evil 7, distinguish the standard release from Gold Edition and verify what the listing includes.
  • Separate original and sequel listings. A listing for Alien: Isolation 2 is not the original game recommended here. The sequel’s June 2026 announcement did not establish a launch date or price.
  • Verify current price and stock. The available evidence does not establish current physical inventory, regional pricing or a universal sale price for any of the three games.
  • Match the experience to your tolerance. Choose stealth and pursuit for sustained cat-and-mouse pressure, unarmed escape for maximum helplessness, or franchise immersion for a first-person Resident Evil experience.

Why these three work as a set

The recommendations cover the central bridge between a survival-horror film and an interactive game: vulnerability under pressure. They do not claim that the games share identical mechanics or tone. Instead, each isolates a different reason a viewer might want to continue the feeling after the credits.

Alien: Isolation makes vulnerability spatial: the environment is tight, and the pursuer can appear wherever your route exposes you. Outlast makes it practical: without a weapon, survival depends on movement and concealment. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard makes it contextual: an ordinary lead and first-person presentation place you inside the established franchise’s survival-horror framework.

Start with the row in the table that describes the tension you want, then verify the edition for your device. That approach is more reliable than choosing solely by monster design or assuming every game labeled survival horror will produce the same kind of fear.
