ltdis90n.dll is an old 32-bit LEADTOOLS imaging DLL, not a Windows system file. If ltdis90n.dll is missing, Windows usually cannot start an older scanner, imaging, document-management, or OEM application that installed it.
The safest fix is to identify the program that owns the file and repair or reinstall that complete application. Do not download a loose copy of ltdis90n.dll and place it in System32. That can introduce the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or malware while leaving the original application damaged.
What ltdis90n.dll is
| Detail | Meaning |
|---|---|
| File | ltdis90n.dll |
| Product family | LEADTOOLS DLL for Win32 |
| Publisher | LEAD Technologies, Inc. |
| Main role | Display support for applications that show images |
90 in the name |
LEADTOOLS 9-era library |
N in the name |
Non-Unicode build |
| Architecture | Win32, or 32-bit |
| Windows component | No |
LEADTOOLS split display functions into a library named LTDIS90N.DLL in the LEADTOOLS 9 generation. The file normally works alongside other matching libraries, potentially including LTKRN90N.DLL, LTFIL90N.DLL, and LTIMG90N.DLL.
The exact owner depends on the computer. Historical software packages have included this library with scanner software, document imaging products, ScanSoft PaperPort, OEM utilities, and old installation media. An installation error can also appear while installing an older program rather than launching one.

- AVOIDS PAPER JAMS AND DAMAGE. Features a brake roller system to feed paper smoothly, a multi-feed sensor that detects pages stuck together, and skew detection to prevent paper damage and data loss
The N suffix matters. It identifies the non-Unicode build, while other LEADTOOLS releases used different names for Unicode, x64, or newer runtime files. A current LEADTOOLS DLL is not automatically a replacement for ltdis90n.dll.
First, identify the application that needs the file
Reinstalling the wrong program will not solve this error. Start by finding the executable or installer that requested ltdis90n.dll.
Check the complete error message
Look for a path in the error window. It may identify:
- The application folder
- A scanner or printer installation directory
- An old Office-era program folder
- A document-management or imaging folder
- A temporary installer location
If the message appears during setup, note the product name shown in the installer. One historical installation report displayed an ERROR 1305 message while reading ltdis90n.dll, which indicates an installation-media or file-access problem rather than a normal Windows startup failure.

Check recently used programs
Think about what changed immediately before the error appeared:
- An old scanner or multifunction device was reconnected
- A scanning application was removed or upgraded
- Antivirus quarantined a file
- A cleanup utility removed an application folder
- An application was moved to another drive
- A failed upgrade interrupted installation
- A hard-drive or file-system problem damaged the program
Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11 or Settings → Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10. Search for imaging, scanning, document, camera, printer, or OEM software installed around the time the error began.
Also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Very old applications may appear there but not in the modern Settings list.
Search for matching LEADTOOLS files
If the original program still has a folder, search it for these names:
ltdis90n.dll
ltkrn90n.dll
ltfil90n.dll
ltimg90n.dll
To search from File Explorer:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, type
ltdis90n.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click any result and select Open file location.
- Note the folder and the nearby executable files.
A copy beside the program’s executable is more useful than a copy found in an unrelated system directory. Do not assume that every copy is safe or correct. The folder path helps identify the owning application, but provenance still needs to be checked.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution because ltdis90n.dll is an application-owned runtime file.

Use the built-in repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application that produced the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Some older programs do not expose a Windows repair button. In that case:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair when the vendor installer offers it.
- Restart the computer and test the application.
A successful repair normally restores the missing file beside the application and allows the program to launch or continue its installation. It should not require copying the DLL into a Windows folder.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Save any application data or scan profiles you need.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the original software publisher, scanner manufacturer, device manufacturer, licensed installation media, or your organization’s software archive.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Reinstall the complete application and its device components.
- Restart Windows.
- Test scanning, image viewing, importing, or the specific operation that originally failed.
For a scanner, reinstall the package for the exact scanner model. Do not use a generic scanner driver or a random DLL. If the software came on a CD, the disc may be damaged or incomplete; use a clean, legitimate installer from the device manufacturer when one is available.
If the application has a built-in Repair, Verify files, or Verify integrity option, use that before removing the entire installation.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly when an old application has unusual files or an installer is no longer maintained.
Do not disable antivirus protection broadly. First inspect the event that removed the file.

- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection related to
ltdis90n.dllor the affected application. - Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:
- The file came from the legitimate application installer.
- The path belongs to the expected application.
- The application and installer came from a trusted, licensed source.
- You have checked the file’s digital signature when one is available.
- The detection is understood and has been assessed as a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device. If the file came from an unknown download, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from a legitimate source instead.
After a safe restoration, repair or reinstall the complete application. Restoring one file may not repair other missing or damaged LEADTOOLS components.
Fix 3: Confirm the 32-bit application and runtime architecture
ltdis90n.dll is a Win32 library. That means the application using it is normally a 32-bit application, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Do not replace it with a current x64 LEADTOOLS file. Different library names and builds are not interchangeable.
If the application documentation identifies Microsoft Visual C++ as a missing prerequisite, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official download page. A 32-bit application generally requires the x86 package, including on 64-bit Windows. Installing only an x64 runtime does not satisfy every 32-bit dependency.
After installing the documented prerequisite:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the application again.
- If the same error remains, repair or reinstall the application rather than copying individual runtime files.
You can also check the application folder for matching LEADTOOLS files. A mixture of old 90N files and newer or differently named files may indicate a partial or mismatched installation. The complete vendor package is the correct way to restore a consistent set.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall the scanner or device driver
If the error appears while scanning, importing, or opening a scanner utility, the application and its device package may be damaged separately.
Reinstall through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the device.
- Right-click the affected scanner or device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you have the correct replacement package ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Disconnect the device if it is external.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact driver and software package for the device model.
- Reconnect the device when the installer requests it.
- Test the vendor scanning application.
Do not use Device Manager’s generic Update driver result as proof that the complete imaging application has been restored. Device Manager may install a basic hardware driver without restoring the vendor’s 32-bit interface, imaging libraries, or scanning utility.
When manually hunting through old driver packages, it is easy to select a driver for the wrong model or Windows architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or missing device drivers and show what needs attention; its repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. For this particular DLL, reinstalling the scanner manufacturer’s complete software package remains the definitive fix when the application owns ltdis90n.dll.
Fix 5: Run the legacy program with compatibility settings
A repaired DLL does not guarantee that a LEADTOOLS 9 application will run correctly on current Windows. The program may depend on older installers, permissions, display behavior, or operating-system interfaces.
To try compatibility settings:
- Locate the application shortcut.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version suggested by the application vendor or your organization’s documentation.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it and you understand the security tradeoff.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
You can also run the built-in troubleshooter:
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties → Compatibility.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts.
- Test the recommended setting.
If the program installs but will not run, compatibility mode may help. If it still fails, use the original vendor support channel, a maintained replacement, or a supported legacy Windows environment. Do not assume that a current Windows version can run every LEADTOOLS 9 application.

Windows Features will not recreate ltdis90n.dll, but an old application may require a legacy Windows component or an older framework.
To inspect optional features:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the features required by the application’s documentation.
- Select only the required feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable features at random to fix a missing third-party DLL. If the installer specifically reports a missing .NET Framework component or another Windows feature, follow that application’s documented requirement. The presence of an optional Windows feature does not replace the application’s LEADTOOLS files.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only if broader problems exist
Windows repair commands are appropriate when multiple unrelated programs are failing, Windows protected files are damaged, or the computer has broader component-store problems. They do not normally recreate an application-owned ltdis90n.dll.

What not to do
Do not download a lone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong LEADTOOLS release
- A different architecture
- A damaged file
- An incompatible build
- A file that does not match the other libraries in the application
Even a clean-looking replacement may cause a loader error, application crash, or version conflict. Use the original application installer, the scanner manufacturer’s official package, licensed recovery media, or the software publisher’s support process.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Application-owned DLLs should normally remain beside the executable that loads them. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 is the 32-bit compatibility directory. Neither is a general-purpose storage location for third-party application libraries.
Global copying can cause Windows to load the wrong file and can make future troubleshooting harder.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM or ActiveX registration entry point DllRegisterServer. A normal LEADTOOLS runtime library is generally loaded directly by its application and does not become usable merely because it was registered.
Running a command such as this is not a valid repair for an ordinary missing runtime DLL:
regsvr32 ltdis90n.dll
If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that is expected for a DLL that is not a self-registering component. Repair the application instead.
If the file exists but the error continues
A present file does not prove that the installation is healthy. The remaining problem may be:
Recommended Free Tools
- A damaged copy of the DLL
- A missing dependent DLL
- A mismatched set of LEADTOOLS files
- A 32-bit application using an incompatible library
- Incorrect application permissions
- A damaged installer or upgrade
- An unsupported legacy operating environment
Repair or reinstall the complete application first. Avoid replacing only the file named in the error because the loader may report the first missing or incompatible component it encounters.
If the error appears during installation, copy the installer to a local folder and run it again from there if the original media or network location may be inaccessible. If the same file-reading error returns, obtain clean installation media from the software or device manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions
Is ltdis90n.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party LEADTOOLS Win32 imaging library. Windows Update, DirectX, and .NET do not normally restore it.
Is ltdis90n.dll safe?
The filename alone does not prove safety. A legitimate copy should come from the original application or device package and should be located in the expected application directory. A copy from an unknown download source should not be trusted merely because its name matches.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which program installed ltdis90n.dll?
There is no single owner for every computer. It has been used by older imaging and scanning software, OEM packages, document applications, and installation media. Use the error path, installed-program list, scanner model, and neighboring files to identify the owner.
Is the affected program 32-bit?
Usually, yes. ltdis90n.dll is a Win32 library. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application files and any required x86 prerequisites.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Keep application-owned DLLs with the application that supplied them. Copying the file globally can create path, architecture, and version conflicts.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally, no. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. It does not repair an ordinary LEADTOOLS runtime library.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does the error say the file exists but cannot be loaded?
The file may be damaged, incompatible, or dependent on another missing library. A complete application repair or reinstall is safer than replacing the named file by itself.
Can SFC or DISM restore it?
Not normally. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not generally restore third-party LEADTOOLS files.
What if the original installer is unavailable?
Check the software publisher, scanner manufacturer, organization’s licensed media, or an archived installer that your organization is authorized to use. If the application is no longer supported, test it in a suitable legacy environment or replace it with maintained software rather than obtaining an unverified DLL.
What if the error returns after reinstalling?
Check antivirus Protection History, confirm that all matching application files were restored, verify the device package, and look for a missing dependency. If only this old application fails while Windows and other programs work, the issue is still most likely within that application or its compatibility requirements.
