Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest safe path:
- The error appears while switching keyboard layouts, signing in, or typing: remove and re-add the Divehi Typewriter layout in Windows Settings.
- The file is missing from the Windows folder, or several Windows components are failing: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- Windows Security recently quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error started after an update, language change, or software installation: try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- SFC cannot repair the file, or DISM also fails: use matching Windows installation media or Windows recovery.
- A specific third-party program reports the error: repair or reinstall that program only after repairing Windows. Do not copy the DLL into its folder.
- You are considering a DLL download or
regsvr32: do not use either as the first repair. This is a Windows keyboard-layout DLL, not a general-purpose application library.
What kbddiv2.dll is
kbddiv2.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component named Divehi Typewriter Keyboard Layout. Windows identifies the layout with keyboard layout identifier 00010465, and Microsoft lists it as available beginning with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-layout table.
The file belongs to the Windows input system. It is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET runtime file
- A hardware driver
- A game middleware library
- A normal COM or ActiveX DLL
Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its window manager when the associated input locale is used. Microsoft’s keyboard-layout sample documentation describes these DLLs and their normal installation location.

On a typical Windows installation, the file belongs under:
%WinDir%System32
Do not assume that every computer should have an identical copy in the same visible path. Windows can use architecture-specific components and redirected paths. A 64-bit installation can contain components for different application architectures, but that does not make a random copy from another computer safe.
An English-language PC may still have kbddiv2.dll because Windows can install or retain keyboard layouts independently of the display language. A user may also have added Divehi input in the past, received a language component with Windows, or inherited the layout from an older installation.
Is kbddiv2.dll safe
The filename and description are legitimate Microsoft Windows identities. That does not mean every file named kbddiv2.dll found on the internet is safe.

- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%WinDir%System32in the address bar. - Find
kbddiv2.dll, if it is present. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
A Microsoft signature and the expected Windows system location support the file’s provenance. If the file is in a temporary folder, a download folder, an application directory, or another unexpected location, do not assume it is the system component.
The safest source is Windows itself through Windows Update, Windows servicing, matching installation media, or the relevant language and input component. Avoid DLL download sites. A downloaded file can contain malware, belong to another Windows release, use the wrong architecture, fail signature checks, or leave the underlying component corruption unresolved.
Identify the exact error and trigger
Before changing anything, record the complete message and when it appears. Common generic patterns include:
- “The program can’t start because kbddiv2.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “kbddiv2.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find kbddiv2.dll.”
- “Error loading kbddiv2.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “kbddiv2.dll could not be loaded.”
- “The file kbddiv2.dll is missing or corrupted.”
These are general Windows DLL message patterns, not proof that a particular game or application officially depends on this file.
The trigger helps separate the likely causes:
- While changing input languages: damaged or incomplete keyboard-layout installation
- After Windows Update or cleanup software: Windows component deletion or corruption
- After antivirus activity: possible quarantine or mistaken removal
- After a disk problem or forced shutdown: broader file-system or component damage
- Only inside one application: application-specific behavior or a damaged application installation
Do not assume the named program caused the problem. First determine whether Windows itself can repair and load the layout.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
Pending updates can include repaired or replaced Windows components.

Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Try the action that produced the
kbddiv2.dllerror.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the affected keyboard layout or application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing, corrupted, or rejected Windows copy of kbddiv2.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM guidance.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Leave the elevated Command Prompt open.
DISM may take time and can appear to pause. Do not close the window merely because progress is slow. A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully.
Run SFC
In the same administrator Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the keyboard layout or program again.
If SFC repaired files, the restart is important because Windows may need to replace or reload protected components.
Manually finding the right Windows build, comparing files, and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious. If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a repair source that matches the installed Windows version and edition:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a matching Windows repair source. Do not use a source simply because it came from another computer or another Windows edition. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Then restart and test again.
If SFC cannot repair kbddiv2.dll
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run DISM again:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Run SFC again:
sfc /scannow
- Review the repair details in:
%WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Do not replace the file manually based only on its name. If the second repair attempt fails, use matching Windows installation media as the DISM source or proceed to Windows recovery.

Fix 3: Remove and re-add Divehi Typewriter
Use this fix when the error occurs during input switching or when Windows cannot use the associated layout. Microsoft’s keyboard and language settings allow layouts to appear under a language other than the current display language.

Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Locate the language associated with the keyboard.
- Select the More options button beside it.
- Choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, find Divehi Typewriter.
- Select it and choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the relevant language’s Language options.
- Select Add a keyboard.
- Add Divehi Typewriter.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
- Test the input switcher.
If Divehi Typewriter is not listed, add the relevant Divehi language first, then open its language options and add the keyboard. If the layout is not needed, leaving it removed is valid. Removing an unused layout can also stop Windows from trying to load that component during input switching.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Select the relevant language.
- Choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, remove Divehi Typewriter if it is present.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to the same language options page.
- Select Add a keyboard.
- Add Divehi Typewriter.
- Test the keyboard layout.
If removing and re-adding the layout resolves the error, the original language or input-layout installation was probably incomplete or damaged. If the layout repair fails, run DISM and SFC.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate system file, but do not automatically restore every detection.

- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry involving
kbddiv2.dll. - Check the reported path, detection name, and action.
- If the file is in the expected Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is trustworthy, review Microsoft’s Protection History guidance before deciding whether to restore it.
- If the detection is unclear, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Do not add broad antivirus exclusions for the Windows directory. If malware removal preceded the error, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate the wider system rather than restoring a questionable file.
Fix 5: Check for broader update or disk damage
If other Windows files are missing, updates fail, or the computer has experienced forced shutdowns, the DLL error may be one symptom of broader damage.
First review Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note recent failures or changes. Microsoft provides Windows Update troubleshooting for update-related problems.
Only investigate the disk when there are signs such as repeated file corruption, disk warnings, or unexplained read errors. An administrator Command Prompt command is:

chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. Save work before accepting that restart. Do not run disk repairs merely because one keyboard-layout DLL is missing.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver, update, language change, or software installation and an older restore point exists. It does not replace personal-file backups.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the layout and the affected program.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.

If no suitable restore point exists, return to DISM and SFC or use Windows recovery.
Fix 7: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one third-party program displays the error, do not assume it should contain a private copy of kbddiv2.dll.
Try the application’s supported repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If repair is unavailable or unsuccessful, uninstall and reinstall the application from its documented vendor source.
If Windows itself reports the same problem elsewhere, repair Windows first. Copying a system DLL into a game or application folder can create version, signature, servicing, and architecture conflicts.

kbddiv2.dll is not a keyboard hardware driver, and Device Manager does not normally repair this DLL. Do not use Device Manager as the primary fix for a missing keyboard-layout file.
Use it only when there are separate hardware symptoms, such as a keyboard that is not detected:

- Right-click the affected hardware.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if requested.
If the device has a warning icon, use the computer or keyboard manufacturer’s documented driver source. Do not expect a driver update to replace kbddiv2.dll.
Finding which of many installed drivers is stale can require checking hardware IDs and vendor packages manually. Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 kbddiv2.dll
as a routine repair. Keyboard-layout DLLs expose layout information to Windows through the keyboard-layout system, including the KbdLayerDescriptor entry point. They are not ordinary COM or ActiveX libraries that need registration with regsvr32.
A registration error does not repair a missing layout and may distract from the actual problem. Use Windows language settings, DISM, SFC, or matching Windows repair media instead.
When to use Windows recovery or an in-place repair
Escalate when:
- DISM cannot complete even with a matching source
- SFC repeatedly cannot repair protected files
- Windows Update is broadly failing
- Multiple system components are damaged
- Malware or disk damage affected more than this DLL
- System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful
Back up important files first. Windows recovery options can reinstall or reset parts of Windows, with different effects on applications and personal data. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
On Windows 11, a supported repair-reinstall option is Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Follow Microsoft’s repair-reinstall instructions.

Prevention
- Keep Windows updated and restart after major servicing.
- Do not delete files from
%WinDir%System32during cleanup. - Avoid registry cleaners that remove language or input-layout entries.
- Keep security software active, but review quarantine actions before restoring files.
- Remove unused keyboard layouts through Settings rather than deleting DLLs.
- Maintain backups before major language-pack, update, or system changes.
- Use matching Windows installation media if a repair source is required.
- Do not copy system DLLs between Windows installations, even when the filenames match.
FAQ
Do I need kbddiv2.dll if Windows is in English?
Not necessarily. The file is associated with the Divehi Typewriter layout, not the English display language. Windows may still retain it because an input layout or language component is installed or registered.
Is kbddiv2.dll required on every Windows installation?
No. Its relevance depends on the Windows version and the installed or registered keyboard layouts.

Microsoft documents keyboard-layout DLLs as being installed in %WinDir%System32, with architecture-specific exceptions. Do not choose a replacement based solely on whether a web page lists System32 or SysWOW64.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET help?
There is no justified reason to treat those runtimes as the first repair for kbddiv2.dll. This file is a Windows keyboard-layout component.
