Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Windows reports that ltfil90n.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the older application that originally installed it. ltfil90n.dll is a 32-bit LEADTOOLS application library, not a Windows system file, so downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32 is usually the wrong approach.
What this file actually does
ltfil90n.dll is associated with LEADTOOLS DLL for Win32, developed by LEAD Technologies, Inc. It provides file and image loading or conversion support for software that uses the older LEADTOOLS imaging components.

LEADTOOLS documentation describes the LTFIL component as providing file read/write and image-format support. Native applications may also need the matching LEADTOOLS kernel and other companion libraries. These files are application redistributables, supplied with the program that uses them rather than with Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The 90 naming is associated with the older LEADTOOLS 9.x generation. LEAD Technologies announced LEADTOOLS 9.0 in 1997, so software requiring this file is likely a legacy imaging, scanning, document, camera, graphics, or device application.

The n file is identified as a Win32 library. In practical terms, treat it as a 32-bit dependency. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit application, but the application still needs its matching 32-bit LEADTOOLS files.
Do not treat the following third-party metadata as definitive:
- Exact version numbers
- File size
- Build date
- Hash values
- Compatibility with a particular Windows release
Public file databases disagree about some of these details, and the exact build depends on the software package that supplied the DLL.
Causes and symptoms at a glance
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error names a scanner or imaging program | An incomplete installation or missing companion file | Repair or reinstall that program |
| The file disappeared after antivirus activity | Quarantine or detection | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| The program was copied from another computer | Supporting DLLs were not copied | Reinstall the complete application |
| The program starts on another PC but not this one | Missing application package or wrong architecture | Install the matching 32-bit application files |

Before changing anything, identify the parent application
The filename alone does not identify the exact program that needs it. Start by finding the executable named in the error and the folder where Windows expects the DLL.
Check the error window
Read the complete message. It may appear when launching:
- A scanner or multifunction printer utility
- A document management program
- An older graphics or image editor
- Camera or media-import software
- A craft, cutting, or design application
- Software copied from an older Windows installation
If the message names an executable, write it down. That executable is more useful than ltfil90n.dll because it identifies the program whose installer should restore the file.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the path in Target.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Note the application folder and any vendor name shown in the path.
Do not copy a DLL into that folder yet. First use the information to identify the correct installer or repair option.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Look for Repair or Reset.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if shown.
- Use Repair when available.
Many older desktop programs do not expose these buttons. In that case, use the program’s original installer or Control Panel:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Look for Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the primary fix because ltfil90n.dll belongs to the application package.
Use the original installer
If you still have the installer:
- Close the affected program.
- Temporarily close its launcher, tray utility, or updater.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- If Repair is not available, choose the normal installation option.
- Keep the original installation folder unless the vendor specifically instructs otherwise.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program again.
A successful repair restores the matching ltfil90n.dll and any companion LEADTOOLS files. The program should open without the missing-file message.
Reinstall when Repair is unavailable
- Back up documents, templates, profiles, and custom settings used by the application.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings → Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run the original installer from the application or device vendor.
- Restart again before testing the program.
If the application came with a scanner, camera, printer, or other device, reinstall the complete software package rather than installing only a device driver. Older programs often place several related LEADTOOLS libraries in the same application directory.
Do not substitute a similarly named file from another LEADTOOLS release. A different major version can have different dependencies and may cause a new load error.
If you no longer have the installer
Identify the original software or device vendor from:
- The shortcut target
- The application folder name
- The program’s entry in Installed apps
- The device label or model
- Old installation media
- The error’s executable name
- Windows’ uninstall entry
Obtain the installer from that vendor or from the original licensed media. Current LEADTOOLS documentation explains application redistribution, but it does not provide a verified standalone download for this legacy DLL. The correct runtime normally comes from the parent application.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old DLL even when the surrounding application is legitimate. Do not immediately disable protection or restore an unknown file.
Recommended Free Tools
Inspect Protection history
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event matching the time the application stopped working.
- Expand the event and read the detected file path.
Pay attention to the path:
- A DLL inside the original application folder may be part of the installed package.
- A DLL in a temporary download folder deserves more scrutiny.
- A DLL in an unexpected system or user-data location should not be restored automatically.
Only choose Restore if all of the following are true:
- You recognize the parent application.
- The file was installed by a trusted original package.
- The path matches the application’s normal folder.
- The antivirus event does not indicate a serious threat.
- You can verify the file’s publisher or digital signature where available.
If those conditions are not met, leave the file quarantined. Uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor source instead, then run a full security scan.
Check the file’s properties
If a copy exists in the application directory:
- Right-click
ltfil90n.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Review the General and Details tabs for the file location and publisher information.
A missing signature does not prove malware, especially for very old software. It does mean the filename alone cannot establish authenticity.
Fix 3: Restore the complete 32-bit dependency set
A missing ltfil90n.dll message can be a symptom of a damaged application folder. The file may be present while another required LEADTOOLS library is absent or incompatible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLEADTOOLS applications can use related components such as:
- The LEADTOOLS kernel
- Image-processing libraries
- Display components
- Other file-format libraries
The exact set depends on the program. Restore the entire application package instead of collecting individual DLLs from the internet.
Check the application folder
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Choose Open File Location.
- Look for
ltfil90n.dlland other files with matching LEADTOOLS naming. - Do not replace individual files with copies from a different computer unless they came from the same application installation and version.
- Run the vendor installer again if the set is incomplete.
A 64-bit Windows installation does not require you to put this 32-bit application DLL in System32. The program’s own directory is normally the correct location because the application and its dependencies were packaged together.
Do not place it manually in either:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs. Manual placement can create version conflicts and can cause another program to load the wrong library.

Windows uses defined DLL search rules, including the application directory and other locations. Keeping the matching files with the executable gives the application the best chance of loading the intended runtime.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall the related device driver
If the error appears when using scanner, camera, printer, or imaging hardware, update the complete device software package from the hardware vendor. A driver update may not directly provide ltfil90n.dll, but it can restore the application that depends on it.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For older hardware, Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the vendor’s complete software package is missing. In that situation, use the hardware vendor’s installer rather than relying only on Device Manager.
If the device recently stopped working:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Do not select a driver-removal option unless you have the correct replacement package ready.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the vendor’s complete package.
- Restart again and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which of several device drivers is stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns ltfil90n.dll remains the definitive fix.

- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the affected application.
- Follow the prompts and test the recommended settings.
On Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters, then select Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
You can also test compatibility manually:
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the program’s vendor documentation supports it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
Compatibility mode cannot replace an obsolete hardware driver or a missing application dependency. If the program uses unsupported components, the practical solution may be a vendor update, a supported replacement, or an isolated older computer.

Windows repair commands are secondary for this error. ltfil90n.dll is not a Windows component, so SFC normally will not download or recreate it. These commands are useful when other Windows programs also fail, system files are damaged, or the application installation problem followed broader Windows corruption.
Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
Do not start SFC until DISM has finished. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, Windows system files are less likely to be the cause.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of repeatedly checking Windows components less tedious: its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it cannot replace reinstalling the specific application that supplies ltfil90n.dll.
Microsoft provides the official instructions for System File Checker and DISM in its Windows support documentation.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. ltfil90n.dll is normally an application runtime library, not a COM or ActiveX component that needs registration.
Running this command is generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 ltfil90n.dll
It may produce an error such as:
The module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean the DLL is missing or that another copy should be downloaded. It means the file does not provide the registration function that regsvr32 expects.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor explicitly identifies a particular DLL as a self-registering component and provides the correct command. For a normal LEADTOOLS runtime failure, repair or reinstall the application instead.
Fix 8: Use System Restore only for a recent known change
System Restore can help when the file disappeared immediately after a recent driver installation, software removal, or system change and the original installer is unavailable.
The Tool Desk

rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish to start the restoration.
System Restore is not a substitute for obtaining the correct licensed application files. Do not use it casually if the program contains important recent configuration changes.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites that offer isolated copies of ltfil90n.dll. A downloaded file may have:
- Malware or unwanted modifications
- The wrong LEADTOOLS generation
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing companion libraries
- Incompatible exports
- An unverifiable publisher
- A version that breaks another application
Even a clean replacement may not solve the problem because the parent program could also need the LEADTOOLS kernel or other matching files. It can also hide the reason the original file disappeared.
Use the original application, scanner, camera, graphics, or device vendor’s installer. If antivirus quarantined the file, verify the source and path before taking any action.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the error remains
Collect these details before contacting the application vendor:
- The exact error wording.
- The executable named in the error.
- The full path of the application.
- The Windows version and system architecture.
- The application name and version.
- Whether the program came from a scanner, camera, printer, or graphics package.
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file.
- The names of any other missing LEADTOOLS files.
- The results of Repair, reinstall, DISM, and SFC.
- Whether the same program works on another supported computer.
If only this old application fails while other Windows programs work, Windows repair is unlikely to restore ltfil90n.dll. The application vendor is the authority for the correct runtime package and any licensing requirements.
FAQ
Is ltfil90n.dll part of Windows?
No. Available evidence identifies it as a third-party LEADTOOLS Win32 library from LEAD Technologies. It should not be treated like a Windows system DLL.
Is ltfil90n.dll 32-bit?
It is associated with the Win32 LEADTOOLS library generation. Use the matching 32-bit files supplied with the 32-bit application, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Which program uses ltfil90n.dll?
The filename does not identify one exact program. Historical software inventories associate it with scanner and imaging packages and with some older graphics or design applications. Check the executable and application folder named by the error.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
Normally no. Restore it to the application’s own directory through the original installer. Do not use Windows system folders as a general DLL repository.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET restore it?
There is no verified evidence that those packages supply this LEADTOOLS file. They should not be the primary fix. Repair or reinstall the application that requires it.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. It is generally an application runtime library, not a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. A DllRegisterServer error means registration is not applicable.
Is a copy of the file safe?
The filename alone cannot prove authenticity. Check the original location, publisher information, digital signature where available, and antivirus results. Prefer reinstalling from the original vendor package.
Why does the error appear after moving the program to another computer?
The executable may have been copied without its complete dependency set, or the application may require a different 32-bit runtime package. Reinstall the complete, licensed application rather than copying one DLL.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Check antivirus quarantine, confirm that all matching LEADTOOLS companion files are present, verify that the application is the correct architecture, and test compatibility settings. If other Windows programs also fail, run DISM followed by SFC.
What if the program no longer exists?
Remove the orphaned application through Installed apps or Programs and Features. Also check startup entries and scheduled tasks if an old component continues trying to launch. Do not keep downloading replacement DLLs for software you no longer use.
