Install the Lucky Block mod by matching your Minecraft version to the correct Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge file, launching that modded profile once, and placing the downloaded jar in .minecraft/mods/. Install the base mod before any add-ons; add-ons belong in .minecraft/addons/lucky/. For multiplayer, the original project should be treated as a client-and-server mod with matching versions, while a separate Modrinth project called Lucky Blocks advertises server-side-only play. Those projects are not interchangeable, so identify the exact download you used before configuring a server.

What the Lucky Block mod does
Lucky Block turns a familiar-looking block into a random-event system. The original project documentation says opening one block can select more than 100 possible outcomes. Outcomes include useful items, chests, hostile or friendly mobs, structures, potions, and enchantments, so breaking a block can help a survival run, create a trap, or completely change a minigame round.
The mod also adds three named items: the Lucky Sword, Lucky Bow, and Lucky Potion. The block itself is crafted with eight gold ingots surrounding a dispenser in a crafting table. You can combine certain items with the block or with the lucky items to alter their luck value. A higher or lower value changes the balance between beneficial and harmful results, allowing map makers and players to tune how risky each block feels.

CurseForge describes the original project as a client-and-server mod and lists Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge files. The project page showed a latest-listed 1.21.8 NeoForge file updated December 26, 2025; use that date as a release reference and check the project page for a newer file before installing.
Choose the correct Minecraft version and loader
A Lucky Block jar is not universal. The Minecraft version and mod loader in the filename must match the profile you launch. Never put a Forge jar into a Fabric profile, or a Fabric jar into a Forge or NeoForge profile. A loader mismatch commonly prevents the game from starting before the title screen appears.

Release names from the maintainer encode the loader and minimum Minecraft version. Read the complete filename instead of relying on a search result title. If you are following an older tutorial, its version may no longer correspond to the current project files.
How to install Lucky Block on Minecraft Java Edition
1. Decide the profile you will actually play
Write down the Minecraft version and loader before downloading anything. If a friend is hosting a world, ask for the exact version and loader first. Everyone should build the same profile rather than choosing a version independently and trying to make the files fit later.

2. Install the matching loader
Install Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge for the chosen Minecraft version using that loader’s official installer. The maintainer’s installation sequence begins with installing Forge or Fabric and then running Minecraft at least once. NeoForge files are also listed for the project, so use a NeoForge profile when the Lucky Block download is tagged NeoForge.
3. Launch the clean profile once
Start Minecraft with the newly installed loader and allow it to reach the title screen. This creates the profile folders and confirms that the loader itself works before the mod is introduced. Close the game completely after the title screen appears.
4. Download the base mod from the official project
Use the original Lucky Block project on CurseForge or the release path linked by its maintainer. Select the file whose loader and Minecraft version match your profile. Do not use a mirror or a jar built for a different loader.
5. Put the jar in the mods folder
Open your Minecraft directory and place the downloaded Lucky Block jar in .minecraft/mods/. On a standard Java Edition installation, .minecraft is the folder that contains directories such as mods, saves, and resourcepacks. If the mods directory does not exist, launching the loader once normally creates it; you can also create the folder with that exact name.

6. Test the base installation before adding extras
Launch the same modded profile again. Wait for the title screen, open the Mods list if your loader provides one, and create a test world. Confirm that a Lucky Block can be obtained and placed before installing add-ons. Testing the base jar in isolation makes a later failure much easier to diagnose.
7. Add custom content only after the base mod works
Install one add-on at a time and test after each change. This isolates incompatible files and prevents a large collection of add-ons from hiding the cause of a crash.
Where Lucky Block add-ons go
After the base mod has been installed and launched successfully, place Lucky Block add-ons in .minecraft/addons/lucky/. The original project page and the maintainer’s README point to this folder rather than the normal mods folder.
- Launch the loader with only the base Lucky Block jar and reach the title screen.
- Exit Minecraft.
- Create
addons/luckyunder the same.minecraftdirectory if it is missing. - Copy the add-on files into that
luckyfolder. - Restart the matching profile and test the add-on in a disposable world.
Keep a backup of a world before adding or removing content that changes block outcomes. An add-on made for another Minecraft version or loader may fail to load even when the base mod is correct, so read the add-on’s own compatibility information.

Can friends join a Lucky Block server without installing the mod?
There is no single answer for every project named Lucky Block. Multiplayer requirements depend on the exact project and file.

Do not infer the second project’s server-side-only claim from the original CurseForge mod. Verify the project name, loader, Minecraft version, and release notes for the jar you actually installed. If a client receives a “missing mod” or incompatible-version message, treat that as evidence that the chosen release requires the client-side installation.
Set up a private Lucky Block server
The original maintainer’s server workflow is straightforward, but the server and clients must use compatible files. Back up the world before changing the mod list, and keep a copy of the server folder so you can roll back if an add-on damages a map.
- Install the server loader that matches the Minecraft version and Lucky Block release you selected.
- Place the required Lucky Block jar and any required add-ons in the server’s designated mod and add-on folders, following the release instructions for that server build.
- Start the server task once. The first run creates the server files and stops or pauses for the EULA step.
- Open
run/eula.txtand accept the Minecraft EULA by changing the required setting, then save the file. - Edit
server.propertiesfor the world and connection settings you want to use. - Restart the server so the EULA and property changes take effect.
- Give players the configured server address and require them to launch the matching Minecraft version and loader profile.
For the original project, distribute the same compatible mod build to every client that needs it. For a server-side-only Modrinth project, follow that project’s own instructions instead of copying the original workflow blindly.

Self-hosted server or managed Minecraft hosting?
A small group can run Lucky Block from a computer they control or rent a managed Minecraft server. The right choice depends less on the mod itself than on how much administration you want to perform.

Self-hosting is useful when you need complete control over files or want to experiment with add-ons offline. Managed hosting is convenient when the group wants an always-online world and does not want one player to maintain the operating system, backups, and server process. Whichever route you choose, keep a downloadable world backup before changing the mod or loader.
Common installation failures and fixes
The game crashes before the title screen
- Confirm that the Minecraft version in the profile exactly matches the version supported by the Lucky Block jar.
- Confirm that the loader matches: Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge jars are distinct.
- Check the Java/runtime requirement shown by your selected Minecraft and loader version.
- Temporarily remove other mods and launch with only the loader and Lucky Block. Add the other files back one at a time to find a dependency conflict.
- Read the first meaningful error in the crash report rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same jar.
These checks are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that every crash has the same cause. A clean launch with only the base mod gives you a reliable starting point.
The mod does not appear in the game
- Make sure you launched the modded profile, not the vanilla profile.
- Check that the jar is directly inside
.minecraft/mods/and not in a nested download folder. - Verify that the file is the loader-specific build you intended to use.
- Launch the loader once after installation so it can create its folders.
An add-on has no effect
- Confirm that the base Lucky Block mod works without the add-on.
- Move the add-on from
.minecraft/mods/to.minecraft/addons/lucky/if it was placed in the wrong directory. - Check the add-on’s Minecraft and loader compatibility.
- Test the add-on in a new world; an existing world may not contain the structures or loot tables the add-on expects.
Friends cannot connect
- Compare the server’s Minecraft version, loader, Lucky Block jar, and add-on list with each client.
- Read the disconnect message for a missing-mod or version mismatch indication.
- Confirm that the server was restarted after editing
server.propertiesor changing its mod files. - If you installed the separate server-side-only Modrinth project, verify that its claim applies to your exact release rather than assuming it applies to the original CurseForge project.
The world behaves differently after removing a mod
Do not remove a mod from your only copy of a world. Restore the backup, reproduce the change in a test copy, and only then decide whether the world can safely continue with a reduced mod list.
Distribution, videos, and modpacks
CurseForge’s permissions for the original Lucky Block project allow use on public or private servers, YouTube videos, and distribution of custom maps or minigames when the mod itself is not bundled. The project also says modpacks containing Lucky Block may not be distributed on websites other than CurseForge, and the mod jar may not be re-uploaded elsewhere.
