Typical messages include:
- “This application failed to start because lxadsrdr.dll was not found.”

lxadsrdr.dll is not a normal Windows component. It is the Lexmark Z12 System Driver Rendering Plug-in, a printer-driver file supplied with the Lexmark Z12 Color Jetprinter software.

What is lxadsrdr.dll
lxadsrdr.dll is a third-party Lexmark printer-driver component associated with the Lexmark Z12 Color Jetprinter. Its recorded description is:

Public file metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. No verified 64-bit version or current Windows 10 or Windows 11 package has been established.

Why the file is missing
The likely causes are:
- The Lexmark Z12 software installation was incomplete or damaged.
- An old Lexmark driver was removed during cleanup.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A disk-cleanup utility deleted part of the printer package.
- The legacy driver was installed on an incompatible Windows release.
- The printer software was uninstalled but left behind a startup entry.
- The file was altered or replaced by an untrusted download.
- A stale application or malware is requesting the DLL even though no Lexmark software is installed.
The correct repair depends on whether the Z12 printer is still needed.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Lexmark Z12 software
This is the primary fix when you still have the printer or recognize Lexmark software on the computer.
Do not repair this problem by replacing only one DLL. A printer package can also contain driver files, an INF installation file, registry entries, printer-port settings and spooler configuration. Restoring one file may simply produce another error.

Before reinstalling
- Disconnect the Lexmark Z12 printer from the computer.
- Close printer utilities and any installer windows.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Remove the Lexmark Z12 software if it is listed.
- Restart Windows.
If the software cannot be removed normally:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Lexmark printer software.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart the computer.
Install the driver again
Use the original Lexmark installation disc if you have one. Otherwise, obtain the complete package from Lexmark’s official support pages, not from a DLL mirror.
Choose a package intended for the affected Windows release. The available Z12 package is legacy software, so an installer designed for Windows XP should not be assumed to support Windows 10 or Windows 11.

After downloading or locating the installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Do not enable compatibility mode immediately. Try the installer normally first.
- If it fails, right-click the file and select Troubleshoot compatibility.
- Follow Windows’ recommendations.
- Run the installer as an administrator if the package requires it.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair is successful if:
- The Lexmark printer appears under Printers & scanners.
- Windows can print a test page.
- The original application no longer displays the missing-DLL message.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the installer refuses to run, reports that the operating system is unsupported or installs without creating a working printer, continue to the Windows 10 and Windows 11 section below. The issue may be compatibility rather than a missing file.
Fix 2: Remove obsolete Lexmark software
If the Lexmark Z12 is no longer used, removing the old software is safer than restoring lxadsrdr.dll.

- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Lexmark Z12 printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer and choose Remove device.
Remove the old driver package
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Look for a Lexmark Z12 driver.
- Select it and choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
If the missing-DLL message appears during startup after removal:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an identifiable Lexmark startup utility.
- Restart the computer.
Do not disable an unknown entry solely because its name looks unusual. First select it, check its publisher and open its file location. If there is no Lexmark printer or software on the computer, investigate the calling program rather than downloading the DLL.
Fix 3: Check Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility
The Lexmark Z12 is an old printer. Its original documentation targets legacy Windows systems, and the surviving official download is an older Windows XP package. There is no verified current Windows 10 or Windows 11 Z12 package.

A 32-bit printer DLL may load in some 64-bit Windows situations, but that does not make the entire driver compatible with the modern print-driver architecture. A 32-bit file can still fail because of missing dependencies, unsupported installer behavior or incompatibility with the current spooler.
Check whether Windows provides a driver
- Connect and power on the printer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- If the printer appears, select Add device.
- Print a test page.
If Windows does not find it:
- Select Add manually.
- Choose the option for a local printer or manual settings.
- Select an existing compatible port, if one is shown.
- Check the available manufacturer and model list.
- Do not select an unrelated Lexmark model merely to make setup complete.
- Cancel the wizard if no suitable driver is offered.
Windows Update may provide drivers for supported printers, but that does not establish compatibility with the Z12. If no driver works, the practical choices are an older compatible Windows environment or replacing the printer.
A message stating that the program is “not designed to run on Windows” or showing status 0xc000007b usually points to architecture or binary incompatibility. Reinstalling the same legacy package repeatedly will not convert it into a modern driver.

Optional driver-management recommendation
Manually checking old printer packages can involve hunting through incompatible versions and guessing which driver is stale. It is optional, and it cannot create a modern Z12 driver where no compatible package exists.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined a Lexmark file, although a quarantine event is not proof that the file was safe.
Only restore a file when all of the following are true:
- It came from trusted Lexmark installation media or an authentic Lexmark package.
- The file was located inside the expected Lexmark installation directory.
- The package has credible publisher information.
- A security scan does not identify tampering.
- You still need the Lexmark software.
Check Protection history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection associated with the Lexmark installer or driver.
- Confirm the file path and detection details.
- Choose Restore only if the file is trusted and the Lexmark software is required.
Microsoft notes that Defender can detect a restored file again unless it is explicitly allowed. Do not create an exclusion for an unknown DLL just to make an error disappear.
If the file was found in a game directory, a temporary folder or an unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally retrieve a third-party Lexmark DLL from Microsoft’s component store, so they are secondary steps rather than the main fix.
Use them when Windows has other problems, such as broken built-in apps, failed updates, damaged system files or unexplained service errors.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
How to interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows system files were not identified as damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the original application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: Run Windows Update, restart, repeat DISM and SFC, and inspect the reported details.
Do not expect SFC to restore lxadsrdr.dll. This is a Lexmark driver file, not a Windows-protected system DLL.
Optional automatic-repair recommendation
Running DISM and SFC manually is useful, but repeating commands without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after installing, removing or updating printer software and an older restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the software and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Close.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not affect personal documents, but it can remove recently installed software or drivers. If no suitable restore point exists, return to reinstalling or removing the Lexmark package.

Why you should not copy lxadsrdr.dll manually
Downloading a DLL from a random website is risky because the file may have:
- Malware or altered contents
- The wrong architecture
- A different version
- Missing companion files
- An incorrect digital signature
- No matching printer-driver installation data
Copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64 or an application folder can also create a new error. The correct location depends on the installer and the application’s architecture. A 32-bit DLL is not automatically meant for System32, and placing it in the wrong directory does not configure the printer.

Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring missing files.
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 lxadsrdr.dll
A rendering plug-in may not be a self-registering COM component. If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not prove the DLL is corrupt. It may simply mean that registration does not apply to this file.
Reinstalling the complete printer package is the correct way to install its files and configuration.
Find which program is requesting the file
If the error continues after reinstalling or removing Lexmark software, identify the caller.
- Note when the message appears:
- During startup
- When opening a printer utility
- When launching a specific application
- During a game or launcher verification
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Inspect entries associated with Lexmark or unknown publishers.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location.
- Check the executable’s folder and publisher.
- Scan the file with Windows Security.
If a launcher’s file-verification feature reports lxadsrdr.dll, use that feature only if the launcher is genuinely installing Lexmark software. A modern game has no established connection to this Lexmark printer component.
If no Lexmark software or printer has ever been installed, treat the request as suspicious. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and examine the calling executable before attempting any repair.
