What lxkpclrd.dll Means When Lexmark Printing Stops on Windows

lxkpclrd.dll is associated with Lexmark PCL Plug-in Renderer, a component of Lexmark printer-driver software. If lxkpclrd.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Lexmark driver package for the affected printer rather than downloading the DLL separately.

It is not a verified Windows system file. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 unless a trusted, matching Lexmark installer places it there.

Fix lxkpclrd.dll errors in order

1. Identify the printer or Lexmark program

Time needed: 5 minutes

First determine what is calling the file. The error may appear when printing, opening printer properties, launching an old Lexmark utility, or starting Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Note the Lexmark printer model, if one is listed.
  4. Select the printer and check its installed options.
  5. Press Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
  6. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  7. Look for Lexmark software, a Lexmark status monitor, printer utility, or driver package.

If the printer was removed recently, the old driver may still be installed. A shared or network printer can also leave Lexmark components on a computer that no longer has an obvious Lexmark application.

  • SMALL: Compact printer fits almost anywhere (8. 7 x 14. 5 x 14. 3 inches / 222 x 368 x 363 millimeter).

If the error appears only at startup, the affected component may be an old status monitor or utility rather than the active printer queue.

2. Repair the Lexmark software package

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Use the installed package’s repair option before removing anything.

  1. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Select the Lexmark printer software.
  3. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify if that option is available.
  4. Follow the installer prompts.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Print a test page and open Printer properties.

If the repair completes and the error disappears, the package was probably damaged or incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If there is no repair option, or the installer reports that required files are missing, download the correct package from the printer model’s official Lexmark support page. Lexmark provides complete Windows packages and separate PCL 5, PCL XL, PS3, and HBP packages. These packages are not automatically interchangeable, so match the printer model and the printer language used by the queue.

Lexmark’s current packages include Microsoft WHQL-certified 32-bit and 64-bit printer drivers. That does not prove that every current package contains the older lxkpclrd.dll filename. If a current driver installs successfully but an old utility still reports the error, the utility may need to be removed or restored from the original driver generation.

When manually comparing driver packages and architectures becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated driver components and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the correct Lexmark package remains the definitive fix when that specific program owns the missing file.

3. Remove the obsolete printer and driver cleanly

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Use this step when the printer was replaced, upgraded, or removed, or when reinstalling over the existing package did not help.

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the affected Lexmark printer.
  3. Click Remove and confirm.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  6. Uninstall obsolete Lexmark utilities or the old Lexmark driver package.
  7. Restart Windows again.
  8. Install the current model-specific Lexmark package.
  9. Add the printer when the installer requests it.
  10. Print a test page.

Driver removal can affect other printer queues that use the same driver. If several users or applications print through the same computer, record those queues before removing a shared driver.

If Windows keeps recreating the old queue, open Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Printers, Print queues, and Software devices.
  3. Right-click only the obsolete Lexmark entry.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are certain no other queue needs it.
  6. Restart and install the correct Lexmark driver again.

The exact category depends on the Windows version and driver package. Do not remove unrelated Microsoft print devices.

4. Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5 minutes

Antivirus software may quarantine a printer component after a detection or during cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for a recent event involving lxkpclrd.dll or Lexmark software.
  5. Expand the event and inspect the detected path, source, and detection name.

Restore the file only if all of these are true:

  • The file came from the expected Lexmark installation.
  • The path belongs to the printer package rather than a temporary or writable folder.
  • The detection details are understood.
  • The file’s digital signature and publisher information are consistent with Lexmark.
  • A fresh installation from Lexmark produces the same component.

Do not disable Microsoft Defender merely to force a DLL into place. If the file is detected as malicious, appears in an unusual folder, or has no credible Lexmark provenance, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

5. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Time needed: 5 minutes

A driver component must match the architecture and calling application supplied by its package. Replacing a 32-bit component with an arbitrary 64-bit DLL, or the reverse, can create a new loading error.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Read System type.
  3. Note whether Windows is 64-bit or ARM-based.

Then check the Lexmark installer’s supported architecture. Lexmark documents 32-bit and 64-bit Windows driver packages, while its current Universal Print Driver documentation states that the UPD does not support ARM.

Do not assume that a file belongs in System32 because Windows is 64-bit. Do not assume that it belongs in SysWOW64 because the application is old. The installer’s package rules determine the correct location and related registry entries.

“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that lxkpclrd.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot load. The message alone does not prove that the named file is absent.

6. Repair Windows components when other system errors exist

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

Use Windows repair tools when the problem began with broader corruption, several unrelated applications are failing, or Windows itself reports damaged components. These commands may not restore a third-party Lexmark DLL.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the printer and the application that displayed the error.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC scans protected Windows files. If both commands complete successfully but the Lexmark error remains, return to the Lexmark package rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.

If manually interpreting repeated DISM and SFC results is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems; the free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the Lexmark program that owns lxkpclrd.dll.

7. Use System Restore after a recent change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver update, Windows update, cleanup utility, or software installation.

  1. Press Windows key and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Start the restore and let Windows restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It does not guarantee recovery of a third-party Lexmark component, so reinstall the correct driver afterward if necessary.

8. Do not use regsvr32 or a downloaded replacement

Time needed: 2 minutes

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-rendering component may not be a self-registering COM or ActiveX library, so running the command can produce another error without fixing the driver.

Do not download lxkpclrd.dll from random DLL download sites sites or copy a replacement into a Windows folder. The file may be the wrong version or architecture, may lack companion Lexmark files and registry entries, or may be unsafe. Install the complete driver package from Lexmark instead.

What causes lxkpclrd.dll errors

The most likely causes are:

Cause Appropriate fix
Damaged or incomplete Lexmark installation Repair or reinstall the matching Lexmark package
Old driver left after a printer upgrade or removal Remove the obsolete queue and driver, then reinstall
Antivirus quarantine Inspect Protection history and validate the file before restoring
Wrong driver architecture Install the package matching Windows and the printer
Missing dependency Reinstall the complete package rather than copying one DLL
Corrupted Windows components Run DISM, then SFC
Recent driver or system change Use System Restore
Suspicious or counterfeit file Leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan

The exact Lexmark printer models and legacy driver releases that shipped this filename are not consistently documented in current public materials. Older third-party listings also disagree about the file’s architecture and version, so those details should not be used to choose a replacement DLL.

FAQ

Is lxkpclrd.dll a Windows file?

No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with Lexmark PCL Plug-in Renderer and Lexmark printer-driver software.

Why does it appear after I removed my Lexmark printer?

Printer drivers, status monitors, and utilities can remain after a printer is removed. A shared or network printer can also install components without leaving a visible local printer.

Can I fix the error by copying the DLL to System32?

No. Manual copying can create an architecture mismatch and does not install dependencies, registry entries, print processors, or the correct driver configuration.

What if the printer still works?

The error may come from an old control-panel extension, status monitor, startup item, or utility rather than the active print queue. Repair or uninstall the obsolete Lexmark software that still references the file.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no verified evidence that lxkpclrd.dll belongs to those runtimes. Repair the Lexmark printer package first.

What if the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows?

Validate the file’s location, Lexmark provenance, digital signature, and architecture. Reinstall the complete matching driver package instead of replacing the file manually.

What if the error appears on every boot?

Check Settings > Apps > Startup and installed Lexmark utilities. Remove obsolete Lexmark startup software, then restart. If the issue began after a recent change, use System Restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I use Windows recovery?

Use System Restore or Windows repair options when driver repair fails and the problem began after a wider system change. If malware or severe corruption is suspected, follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance rather than restoring an unverified DLL.
