There is no universal cheaper option. If you already own a suitable Mac mini, running a stream locally may cost little beyond electricity and any equipment your setup needs. If you would need to buy one just to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream live, compare its purchase price and ongoing costs with the exact cloud plan you would use. The result depends on your time horizon, power draw, electricity rate, and stream requirements.
What you are comparing
A Mac mini is a local computer: you supply and maintain the streaming setup, including its internet connection and any encoder or automation workflow. A cloud 24/7 streaming service runs prerecorded content continuously without requiring a dedicated computer at home. YouTube’s help materials identify Gyre as a service for continuous prerecorded-video streaming: YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
These approaches are not automatically equivalent. Compare whether each option supports the number of streams and destinations you need, your resolution and frame-rate requirements, storage, playlists or scheduling, and any other required features. Entry plans from different services can have different limits.
Current prices and plan caveats
Apple announced on September 22, 2026, that the M6 Mac mini starts at $899 in the U.S.; the M5 Pro starts at $1,699 in the U.S. These are purchase prices, not total operating costs. Apple lists the M6 Mac mini at $799 for education in the U.S., a separate education price that may have eligibility requirements. A Beamd comparison checked September 21, 2026, lists monthly USD starting prices of $19 for Beamd Starter, $49 for Gyre Start, and $30 for Upstream’s one-stream plan. The comparison warns that storage, destinations, and other features differ, so these are not interchangeable packages. How to calculate your own total
Use the same period on both sides and compare plans that actually meet the same requirements. For a Mac mini, include the purchase cost if you are buying it for this purpose, or clearly separate that sunk cost if you already own it. Then add measured electricity use and any necessary extras. For cloud, use the exact plan price and include required upgrades or add-ons.

- Mac mini total: purchase price (or an explicitly allocated share of an already-owned computer) + measured average wall power in watts × operating hours ÷ 1,000 × your marginal electricity price per kWh + required additional equipment, connection, or backup costs.
- Cloud total: the exact plan price × number of months + required upgrades or add-ons, while checking stream, storage, resolution, destination, and scheduling limits.
For scale, 48 months at the listed $19/month Beamd Starter price totals $912 before taxes or price changes. That is close to the $899 U.S. M6 starting price, but it is not a break-even result: the Mac mini still has electricity and possibly other costs, and the cloud package may not match the local setup’s capabilities.
Do not treat published power figures as stream measurements
Apple’s power table lists 4 W idle and 70 W maximum for the specified M6 Mac mini configuration. Those are reference figures, not measurements of a particular YouTube streaming workload. If one mechanically applies them continuously, 4 W amounts to 2.88 kWh in a 30-day month, while 70 W amounts to 50.4 kWh. These are arithmetic illustrations from the published idle and maximum figures—not expected consumption for a stream. When each option may cost less
You already own a suitable Mac mini
Do not count its full purchase price as a new expense if you would keep the computer regardless. Compare the stream’s incremental electricity, any extra hardware or connection costs, and the effort of maintaining the setup with the cloud plan that meets your requirements. Local operation may be less expensive over your chosen period, but that depends on actual power use and what you need to add.
You would buy a Mac mini specifically for continuous streaming
Include the purchase price in the comparison, then add electricity and necessary supporting costs across the same time horizon as the cloud plan. A low monthly cloud fee can approach the hardware price over several years, but neither the hardware starting price nor an entry-plan fee alone settles which costs less.

Your stream has requirements beyond the cheapest entry tier
Price a cloud plan that covers your actual needs rather than choosing by its advertised starting price. Check destinations, number of simultaneous streams, storage, resolution, frame rate, and playlist or scheduling features. The cited plan comparison explicitly cautions that package contents differ.
