If OBS keeps disconnecting from YouTube on Windows, check the OBS status area before changing settings. A rising dropped-frames counter usually points to the connection between your PC and YouTube’s ingest server; an “Encoding overloaded” warning or choppy output instead points to local GPU or rendering load. Save a log from a session that includes the failure, then follow the matching troubleshooting path below.
First identify what is stopping
OBS distinguishes connection trouble from local performance trouble. Its connection guide says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate an issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. If too many frames are dropped, OBS may disconnect. That points toward the network route or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, not necessarily a defect in OBS itself. OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting (2024-09-30).
- Dropped frames rise when the interruption happens: start with bitrate, network stability, and the route to the ingest server.
- OBS reports “Encoding overloaded,” or the stream is locally choppy: start with GPU/rendering load and output settings.
- Viewers report buffering, but OBS stays connected and dropped frames do not rise: this is not the same symptom as OBS losing its server connection. Check the viewer-side playback path and YouTube’s current stream-health diagnostics rather than assuming OBS disconnected.
In OBS, note the exact status message and whether the dropped-frames counter rises. After the failed session, use Help → Log Files to access the session log; preserve the log containing the interruption before making a series of changes. A log and the symptom details help distinguish connection loss from encoding trouble.
If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
Lower the bitrate as a controlled test
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting rule of thumb, not a guarantee. The relevant figure is upload capacity that stays stable under real conditions—not just a best-case speed-test result. Lowering bitrate can help a constrained or unstable connection, but it also reduces picture quality. OBS Project.

Change the bitrate, then stream long enough to see whether dropped frames continue. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once: otherwise you will not know which test mattered.
Test another ingest server or service
Open Settings → Stream and, if the service offers a server choice, try another available ingest server. This is an isolation test, not a guaranteed repair. Trying another streaming service can help determine whether the issue appears specific to one service or affects the broader connection, but it does not fix the route to the original service.

Try OBS network options cautiously
In Windows OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing one at a time. OBS says some users report these options help; they are tests, not guaranteed fixes, and can add detail to the log. Leave Bind to IP at Default. If testing IPv4 only makes no difference, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting. OBS Project.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation
OBS’s “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta)” option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It may help avoid a disconnect during congestion, but OBS says it does not resolve the underlying cause and reduces image quality. Treat it as a trade-off, not a substitute for diagnosing the connection. OBS Project.

Check the Windows network path
OBS lists firewall or antivirus interference, VPNs, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi instability, modem/router problems, and faulty network hardware among possible causes. Test likely causes in a reversible order rather than buying replacement equipment without evidence. OBS Project.
- Test without a VPN. If one is active, temporarily disconnect it and check whether OBS still drops frames. If the VPN is necessary, use the result as evidence about the route rather than leaving it off as a permanent fix.
- Check security software safely. If you suspect a firewall or antivirus, perform only a temporary diagnostic test. If it confirms interference, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on. Do not leave security protection disabled.
- Check network-prioritization utilities. Software that optimizes or prioritizes traffic can interfere. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC Software Suite as examples; other utilities may behave similarly. OBS recommends disabling the former option or reinstalling the latter with hardware drivers only.
- Update the network driver. Get the current driver from your computer or motherboard manufacturer’s site.
- Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. Use an existing suitable cable and router port first; wired Ethernet is a diagnostic test, not proof that the Wi-Fi device is faulty.
- Restart the modem or router if appropriate. If the problem persists, test components such as a cable, router, network card, switch, or extender before replacing anything. Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve persistent connection problems.
OBS recognizes cables as one possible fault point, but it does not require a particular cable category or claim that buying a new cable will solve disconnections. Replace hardware only when testing points to that component.

If OBS says “Encoding overloaded” or the output is choppy
OBS uses the GPU to composite and render scenes. A game or other GPU-heavy work can leave too little capacity for OBS, even if the internet connection is fine. The OBS performance guide recommends reducing competing GPU use and simplifying the output. OBS Project, Encoding Performance Troubleshooting (2021-06-12).
- Run OBS as administrator. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test again.
- Free GPU capacity. Close unnecessary GPU-heavy applications. If streaming gameplay, cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync; reduce demanding game graphics settings if needed.
- Reduce output demands. In OBS output/video settings, lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, test 30 fps. These changes trade visual detail or smoothness for lower system load.
- Simplify the scene. Disable resource-heavy filters, browser sources, or other complex sources one at a time. Test after each change to identify what is consuming capacity, then decide whether to remove it or use a lighter alternative.
The OBS performance guide also discusses Windows Game Mode and Game DVR, but its advice includes Windows 10-specific distinctions from 2021. Check which Windows version you use and consult current Windows settings guidance before changing those options. OBS Project.

When the cause is still unclear
Preserve the OBS log from the session where the failure occurred and record the exact on-screen error. Note whether dropped frames increased, whether OBS stayed connected, whether you were using Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and whether changing the ingest server or network path changed the result. These observations help separate connection failures from local rendering problems.
An OBS disconnection by itself does not establish an account restriction, stream-key problem, YouTube ingest requirement, or YouTube-wide outage. Check the current YouTube Live Control Room stream-health diagnostics and official YouTube guidance for account- or stream-specific errors; the OBS symptom alone cannot identify those conditions.
