Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute“The program can’t start because macdll.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” The macdll.dll file is Monkey’s Audio’s third-party library, not a Windows system component.
It is used by Monkey’s Audio and by some audio programs, CUE utilities, media players, rippers, and plugins that process APE audio files. The safest repair is normally to identify the application showing the error and repair or reinstall that application from its developer.
Do not start by downloading a loose DLL, copying it into System32, or running regsvr32. Those actions often install the wrong generation or architecture and do not repair the application that actually needs the library.

- The application is 64-bit or Arm64: use the matching build supplied by the application or by the official Monkey’s Audio installer.
- The file exists, but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: another dependency may be missing. The named
macdll.dllfile is not necessarily the missing item. - Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: investigate Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC after repairing the affected application.
- The error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”: suspect corruption, an incompatible binary, or an architecture mismatch.
The application name and executable path in the error dialog matter more than the DLL filename. Write down both before changing anything.
What macdll.dll does
MACDll.dll, also written as macdll.dll, is the Monkey’s Audio DLL Library developed by Matthew T. Ashland. Monkey’s Audio is audio compression software associated with the APE format. Its official SDK documents dynamic linking to MACDll.dll, allowing other software to use the library.
This is an application library, not a protected Windows DLL. Older Monkey’s Audio installations placed copies in Windows system directories, but that does not mean every copy found there is required or appropriate for your current application. The correct location depends on the consuming program and its architecture.
The filename alone also does not identify the correct binary. Monkey’s Audio has supported 32-bit and 64-bit environments, and its history includes changes involving names such as MACDll64. Use the installer or package specified by the affected application rather than selecting a file based only on its name.

You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because macdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because macdll.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting macdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading macdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “macdll.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. “Missing” can mean the file is absent, quarantined, deleted, or stored outside the application directory. “Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency that macdll.dll needs. “Not designed to run on Windows” usually indicates corruption or an incompatible binary, not a missing registry entry.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application that requests the DLL
This is the most likely fix.
Find the requesting program
- Close the error dialog.
- Start the program again and record its exact name.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path.
- Open the target folder in File Explorer.
- Check whether the application folder contains
macdll.dll. - If the error appears when opening a file, note the file type. APE audio or CUE-related activity is useful evidence.
Do not assume that the separate Monkey’s Audio program is the requester. A media utility or plugin may bundle and load its own copy.
Use Windows repair
If the application supports Windows repair:
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The repair is successful if the program opens without the DLL message and performs the operation that previously failed.
If Repair is not available:
- Close the application.
- Download the installer from the application’s original developer.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall if offered.
- If Windows requests elevation, approve it only when the installer is from the expected vendor.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test the application again.
If the application has no repair option, uninstall it from Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the vendor’s installer. Back up application settings or project files first if the program stores them locally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Running the installer as administrator can help when Windows denies access to the application folder, but elevation does not correct an incorrect DLL version. Right-click the installer, choose Run as administrator, and continue only if its source is trusted.

Fix 2: Install the correct Monkey’s Audio build
If the affected application is Monkey’s Audio itself, use the official Monkey’s Audio download page and select the architecture matching the program:
- 64-bit for a 64-bit installation
- 32-bit for a 32-bit installation
- Arm64 for compatible Arm64 software
The current official download page lists installers for all three architectures. Install the package over the existing installation, then launch Monkey’s Audio again.
A 64-bit Windows computer can run 32-bit applications. To check the application type:
- Start the application.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with “32” after its name. If Task Manager does not identify the architecture, check the application documentation or ask its vendor.
Do not overwrite a legacy application’s DLL with the newest library automatically. Older software may depend on an earlier library interface.
CUE Splitter compatibility exception
CUE Splitter documents a specific requirement: it needs Monkey’s Audio Library 4.0 or later and is incompatible with version 3.99 and earlier. Its FAQ points users to Monkey’s Audio 4.06.
If the error occurs only when opening a CUE sheet containing APE audio, follow the CUE Splitter version guidance instead of installing the newest library without checking compatibility. Reinstall CUE Splitter and its required Monkey’s Audio library as a matched combination.
Recommended Free Tools
This is also why a successful installation of Monkey’s Audio does not always fix an older utility. The utility may need a particular library generation or an application-local copy.
Fix 3: Check whether the DLL was quarantined
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate application file after an update, an installer change, or a detection decision.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries.
- Look for an entry naming
macdll.dllor the affected application. - Confirm the file path and detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because the application needs it. Restore it only when the file came from the legitimate application installer and the path and publisher are trustworthy. If the origin is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official vendor.
After reinstalling:
- Run a Windows Security scan.
- Start the application.
- Check whether the same file is quarantined again.
- If it is, record the detection name and contact the application vendor before creating an exclusion.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for an entire drive or for System32.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
A file can be present while Windows still reports “The specified module could not be found.” In that case, a dependency loaded by macdll.dll may be absent.
First, check the application folder and confirm that the file is present. Then note:
- The full path of
macdll.dll - Its file properties and version information, if available
- Whether the application is 32-bit, 64-bit, or Arm64
- Any second DLL named in the error
- Whether the problem affects only one program
Do not infer the required runtime from the filename. Different builds and consuming applications can have different dependencies. Monkey’s Audio history notes that some builds link to Microsoft Foundation Class components, but the exact runtime must be verified for the particular binary.
If the application documentation or dependency inspection identifies a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, install the matching Microsoft-signed package from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Choose x86, x64, or Arm64 to match the application or dependency, not merely the Windows installation.
Restart Windows after installing the runtime and test the application. If the error remains, reinstall the application so its installer can restore the complete dependency set.
Fix 5: Repair wider Windows component corruption
SFC and DISM do not normally restore macdll.dll because it is not a Windows component. Use them when other Windows files are also malfunctioning, Windows features fail, or the problem began with broader system corruption.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the result and return to the application reinstall step. SFC cannot supply the correct third-party macdll.dll.

Repeating these commands without identifying what changed is unlikely to repair an application-specific DLL problem. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by scanning for system problems and showing what it finds, but its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 6: Update Windows and inspect drivers only when relevant
macdll.dll is not a driver, DirectX component, or .NET runtime file. Do not reinstall those packages just because the DLL error mentions them.
Check Windows Update if the affected vendor specifically requires an update:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Use Device Manager only when the application’s own diagnostic identifies an audio device, capture device, or other hardware driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not remove a working device driver as a generic response to macdll.dll. Hunting through multiple driver packages can create a second problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the driver installation itself requires the full version; update drivers only when the affected application or hardware points to them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why regsvr32 does not fix macdll.dll
Do not run:
regsvr32 macdll.dll
Monkey’s Audio documents dynamic linking to the library, not COM self-registration. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary codec or application library does not become usable merely because it was registered.
A failed regsvr32 command can produce messages about missing entry points, incompatible architecture, or loading failure. Those messages do not repair the original application.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid DLL download websites and loose files copied from another computer. A downloaded file can be:
- The wrong library generation
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or malicious
- Missing its own dependencies
- Intended for a different application
- Placed where it creates DLL search-order or hijacking risk
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, do not overwrite files in Windows directories blindly, and do not use a registry cleaner or DLL download sites utility as a substitute for the application installer.
Use the affected application’s official installer first. If the application is Monkey’s Audio, use its official download page and select the matching architecture. For Microsoft runtimes, use Microsoft’s official download pages.

FAQ
Is macdll.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party Monkey’s Audio library. It may have been placed in a Windows system directory by an older installer, but it is not a standard Windows component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is macdll.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. Check its path, publisher, digital signature, and installation source. A copy supplied by the official application installer is more trustworthy than an unexplained copy in a temporary or unrelated folder. If antivirus quarantined it, review the detection before restoring anything.
Should I download macdll.dll separately?
No. Reinstall the application that requests it, or install the matching official Monkey’s Audio package. A loose DLL may be incompatible and may leave the real dependency or installation problem unresolved.
Do I need the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
Match the application, not just Windows. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 library, while a 64-bit application needs x64. Arm64 software may require Arm64 support. Let the application installer place the file whenever possible.
Why does CUE Splitter still fail after installing Monkey’s Audio?
CUE Splitter documents a requirement for Monkey’s Audio Library 4.0 or later and incompatibility with 3.99 and earlier. It may also expect a particular older package. Follow CUE Splitter’s documented version guidance instead of replacing its library indiscriminately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I run SFC or DISM first?
Usually no. Repair or reinstall the application first because macdll.dll is third-party. Use DISM followed by SFC when other Windows components are also failing or broader system corruption is suspected.
Should I register the file with regsvr32?
No. macdll.dll is used through dynamic linking and is not normally a self-registering COM DLL. Registering it does not repair a missing or incompatible application library.
Can Windows Update install macdll.dll?
There is no basis to treat Windows Update as the normal source for this file. Obtain it through the affected application or the official Monkey’s Audio installer.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Identify the program making the request, remove or repair its damaged installation, and reinstall it from the developer’s official source using the correct architecture and any documented legacy-version requirement.
