EA’s Madden NFL 26 gameplay deep dive, published June 17, 2025, focuses on three headline systems: quarterbacks with more individual on-field identities, coaching tools designed to adapt to team tendencies, and weather that EA says can affect play. The announcement also covers defensive controls, playbooks, player movement, celebrations and a rebuilt Skills Trainer. These are EA’s descriptions of the game’s design, not independent hands-on findings.
What the Madden 26 gameplay deep dive announced
EA organized its feature pitch around how players behave and how users make decisions: QB DNA for quarterback identity, Coach DNA for coaching tendencies and recommendations, and Football Weather for environmental effects. The broader feature set includes defensive adjustments, new plays, movement changes, celebration controls and tutorials. EA’s feature page summarizes the main systems, while its June 17, 2025 deep dive provides more detail.
| Feature area | What EA says it changes |
|---|---|
| QB DNA | Quarterback animations, pocket behavior, throwing motions and scrambling styles |
| Coach DNA | Play recommendations, coaching explanations and adaptive tactical behavior |
| Football Weather | Visibility, movement, stamina and ball security in severe conditions |
| Defense and playbooks | Coverage controls, custom zones, pass-rush schemes and a larger selection of plays |
How QB DNA is meant to distinguish quarterbacks
EA says QB DNA gives quarterbacks signature ball holds and throwing motions, more active pocket idles, and distinct scrambling styles. The deep dive also describes updated animations for passing on the run, improved footwork and smoother transitions into and out of scramble movement. The intended effect is for quarterbacks to look and behave less interchangeably; the announcement does not establish how well the differences perform in play.
In an August 14, 2025 interview, Group Creative Director Josh Kline said the systems translate league player-tracking and coaching analytics into gameplay. Describing the intended quarterback distinction, he said, “It doesn’t feel like they’re the same quarterback with a different jersey.”

What Coach DNA and adaptive coaching add
EA describes Coach DNA as models based on NFL coaching and playcalling trends, with planned updates during the season. Its Coach Speak feature is intended to explain why a play is recommended in a coach-like voice. Players can take the suggestion or choose a different play.
The deep dive also describes Real-Time Coaching AI and tactical additions such as motions and shifts, defensive stunts and twists, exotic pressure looks and coach adjustments. Together, these features are presented as ways for playcalling and defensive responses to reflect coaching tendencies. EA’s announcement does not independently verify the effectiveness or balance of those systems.

What EA says changes on defense
EA’s gameplay feature page highlights custom zones, pass-coverage depth control and new pass-rush stunts and twists. The deep dive discusses coverage and run-defense refinements; EA’s launch announcement also lists Adaptive Coverage and defensive mechanics among the updates. These describe intended tools and behavior, not proof that any particular longstanding defensive issue has been fixed.
How severe weather is supposed to affect a game
EA says Football Weather makes severe snow, fog and rain more than visual scenery: conditions can affect visibility, player movement, stamina and ball security. Those are the announced effects; the available feature descriptions do not establish the size or frequency of each effect in actual play.

To illustrate how it says player tendencies inform traits, EA’s deep dive states that Josh Allen’s “Run Over” trait drew on a figure that 54% of his scrambles over the previous two NFL seasons resulted in at least three yards after contact. That percentage is EA’s claim in the article; its underlying data is not independently verified here.
