Mafia: Definitive Edition is best approached as a tightly directed mob drama: Lost Heaven gives the campaign a convincing period setting, but the game is built around scripted missions and a linear story rather than free-form crime activities. Its appeal rests on its characters, presentation, and controlled pacing; players looking for an open-world playground may find the city’s freedom limited.
Is Mafia: Definitive Edition open world?
Not in the way most players mean when they ask for an open-world crime game. You can explore Lost Heaven, but the campaign is heavily scripted and linear. The city supports the story and its period atmosphere; it is not a promise of abundant side activities or open-ended systems.
PC Gamer describes the game as a story-led, linear shooter, while GameSpot also emphasizes how little the open-world appearance changes the campaign’s linear structure. That distinction sets expectations: missions and narrative drive progress, rather than the player choosing freely among a large range of activities.
What kind of game is the campaign?
The remake follows Tommy Angelo’s rise through the criminal world in a cinematic, mission-based story. Its strongest case is the combination of characters, period detail, and directed scenes. The trade-off is reduced freedom: combat and mission structure serve the story, rather than forming a broad sandbox with extensive variations in how to spend time between missions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That balance is reflected in the 2020 reviews. GameSpot called the story the game’s strongest element and scored it 6/10; that score belongs to its 2020 review, not an assessment of the 2026 console versions. PC Gamer highlighted the range of difficulty options, including Classic mode for players seeking a more punishing challenge.
Is Mafia: Definitive Edition a full remake?
Yes. This is a ground-up remake of the original Mafia (2002), not simply a higher-resolution re-release. In its July 2020 reveal, 2K described updated writing and dialogue, expanded character backstories, additional scenes and gameplay sequences, and a re-recorded orchestral score. The remake preserves the original game’s crime-drama premise while rebuilding its presentation and story material.

It is a strong fit if you want a directed crime story with period atmosphere and prefer missions with a clear narrative purpose. It is a less natural fit if your main reason to play is roaming a city, building your own criminal career, or finding a steady stream of optional activities. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the listed 60 FPS gameplay and faster loading make the current-generation editions the relevant versions to consider, while the PS4-to-PS5 route depends on the purchase and disc conditions above.

For a physical copy, look specifically for the standalone PS4 edition. 2K originally released the game on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2020 in digital and disc formats; a PS4 disc does not become a PS5 disc, and its digital upgrade is conditional. Check the listing’s platform, edition, region, condition, and seller before buying, since current price and availability vary.
