The 2016 open-world game is Mafia III. Its PS5 version, Mafia III: Definitive Edition, launched on October 8, 2026, and 2K offers a free upgrade to owners of eligible editions. It is not a free game for every PS5 user: eligibility depends on the edition and, for disc owners, the copy’s acquisition date, region and the PS5 hardware they use. ComicBook.com identified the game and reported on the launch; 2K’s support page sets out the upgrade terms.
Which game is now available on PS5?
It is Mafia III, originally released in 2016. The new PS5 release is titled Mafia III: Definitive Edition. 2K says it became available on October 8, 2026, as a current-generation version of the 2020 Definitive Edition. The publisher lists 60 FPS support, faster loading and fixes to legacy issues among its improvements. See 2K’s PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support article for the publisher’s current details.

2K says the free update is for owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy or Mafia: The Omerta Collection. For Mafia III: Definitive Edition, its instructions specify a physical or digital PS4 copy acquired before October 8, 2026. The publisher names the other two collections as eligible editions, but check its current instructions and the PlayStation Store listing for the specific account and copy before assuming they qualify.

This is an ownership-based upgrade, not a free offer to all PS5 users or a PS Plus giveaway. 2K’s wording is: “This update is free for Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or Mafia: The Omerta Collection owners.” The article was published October 1, 2026, and updated October 11, 2026.
Digital copy or PS4 disc: what changes?
| What you own | What 2K’s instructions say |
|---|---|
| Eligible digital PS4 edition | Use the account that owns the qualifying edition and check the PS5 edition’s PlayStation Store listing and 2K’s current eligibility terms. |
| Eligible physical PS4 copy of Mafia III: Definitive Edition | The copy must have been acquired before October 8, 2026. You need a PS5 with a disc drive; keep the PS4 disc inserted to claim and play the digital PS5 edition. The disc’s region must match your PlayStation region. |
| Mafia: Trilogy or Mafia: The Omerta Collection | 2K names both as eligible editions. Confirm the offer against the particular copy and account in 2K’s instructions and the Store listing. |
A disc owner cannot use this route with a PS5 model that has no disc drive. A disc from a different region also will not qualify under 2K’s stated terms. Because eligibility can depend on edition, account and region, the game title alone is not enough to guarantee the upgrade.

How to check and claim the upgrade
- Confirm that you own one of the editions named by 2K. For a PS4 copy of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, check that it was acquired before October 8, 2026.
- If your copy is physical, make sure your PS5 has a disc drive and that the disc region matches your PlayStation region.
- On PS5, open the PlayStation Store listing for Mafia III: Definitive Edition and check whether the upgrade is offered for the account you use. For a disc copy, insert the PS4 disc when claiming and playing the digital PS5 version.
- If the offer does not appear, compare the edition, purchase date, account and disc region with 2K’s support instructions and check the Store listing for your locale. Do not assume that an edition name by itself guarantees access.
Is PS Plus or an internet connection required?
2K’s FAQ says the original game can be played without PlayStation Plus or an online connection straight out of the box. That statement concerns the original game; it does not establish every requirement for claiming or downloading the PS5 upgrade. Read 2K’s Mafia III FAQ for that original-game information.
