Which platforms changed on October 8, 2026
Three things shipped or changed on the same day, and they are easy to blur together. The PC update applies to the existing PC release. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are new native builds. The upgrade terms are different for each, as the table shows.
Mafia III: Definitive Edition versus Mafia: Definitive Edition
This update concerns Mafia III. A separate console upgrade for Mafia: Definitive Edition, a different game in the franchise, was announced for August 2026. The two titles have distinct patch notes and distinct upgrade rules. A 2K support article about Mafia: Definitive Edition, updated October 8, 2026, covers that game only and should not be used to settle eligibility questions for Mafia III.

Frame rate on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The console patch notes state: “Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S supports 60 frames per second gameplay.” That applies to gameplay. Real-time cinematics also run at 60 FPS in many cases, while pre-rendered movies remain at 30 FPS.
The 60 FPS figure is 2K’s stated specification. It is not an independently measured benchmark, and it does not tell you how stable the frame rate is in heavy scenes or on every hardware revision.

Mission progression fixes
Progression is the most consequential part of the update, but the two platform lists describe the problem differently.
PC update
- Smoother mission progression, with named missions including “Get Enzo Conti,” “Kill Tommy Marcano,” and the Epilogue.
- Checkpoint reload behavior adjusted.
- Stale objective completion flags corrected.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
- Progression blockers fixed across campaign and DLC checkpoints.
- Post-cutscene behavior and loading transitions adjusted.

Upgrade route and ownership
Gematsu’s report describes the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions as free upgrades from PS4 and Xbox One. That is the only upgrade-terms statement tied to a source at the time of writing. The exact rules for disc owners, save transfers, regional restrictions, and account entitlement have not been confirmed in a Mafia III-specific official support notice.

- On PlayStation, look for Mafia III: Definitive Edition in your library or the PlayStation Store purchase history.
