The $960 figure is a reported bill-of-materials (BOM) estimate attributed to hardware leaker Kepler_L2, not a Sony-confirmed manufacturing cost or a retail price. VideoCardz reported it on June 28, 2026 as an increase of roughly $200 over Kepler_L2’s earlier estimate of around $760, and it labels the claim a rumor. VideoCardz’s report is the main reporting on the figure, and it says Sony has not announced the PS6’s specifications, pricing, launch timing, or final hardware configuration.
Where the $960 number comes from
The claim traces back to a public forum post. VideoCardz links the estimate to a NeoGAF thread that attributes the number to Kepler_L2. That thread is the public attribution trail, not a Sony statement, an audited teardown, or a cost document. Secondary coverage, including a PC Gamer article from July 2, 2026, repeats the estimate and explains the difference between materials cost and retail price.
No verified, attributable statement from a named Sony spokesperson or official document confirming the figure has been reported. Any quotation attached to the number should be treated with caution, because the wording available is a reporter’s paraphrase of a leaker’s post rather than a verbatim statement from Kepler_L2.
Three numbers that readers tend to merge
Most of the confusion around this story comes from treating three different cost concepts as one. They answer different questions, and only one of them has a figure attached to it at present.

| Concept | What it measures | Status for the PS6 as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Bill of materials (BOM) | Estimated cost of the physical components inside one console | About $960, attributed to Kepler_L2 and reported June 28, 2026; roughly $200 above an earlier estimate of about $760 |
| Total unit cost | BOM plus assembly, packaging, logistics, and other per-unit costs | Not stated; no Sony figure or audited breakdown has been reported |
| Retail price | What consumers pay at launch | Not announced by Sony; no price has been confirmed |
A BOM is only an estimate of component cost. It says nothing about what Sony pays for assembly or distribution, and it says nothing about what the company will charge. Those gaps are why a $960 materials figure cannot be converted into a shelf price.
Why a materials estimate is not a price forecast
Some coverage has extrapolated the $960 figure into a launch price in the $900 to $1,000 range. That is a forecast built on an unconfirmed component estimate, not a consequence the reporting establishes. Retail pricing depends on several decisions that the BOM figure does not reveal:

- Subsidy: whether Sony sells the hardware at a loss, at cost, or at a margin, and how much it relies on game and service revenue to recover the difference.
- Final configuration: the leak estimate is tied to a hardware setup that Sony has not confirmed, so changes to memory, storage, or other parts would change the number.
- Regional and commercial factors: currency, tax, distribution costs, and pricing strategy vary by market, so a single global price is itself an assumption.
The iTechGuides summary of rumor status, dated October 4, 2026, reaches the same conclusion: the PS6’s price and hardware details remain unconfirmed.
What is established and what is not
- Established: the $960 BOM figure is attributed to Kepler_L2 and was reported by VideoCardz on June 28, 2026.
- Established: the figure was reported as roughly $200 higher than an earlier estimate of about $760 from the same leaker.
- Not established: that Sony has confirmed any production cost, specification, or price for the PS6.
- Not established: that the figure reflects the final hardware. The reporting does not confirm the configuration the estimate assumes.
- Not established: the leaker’s method, sourcing, or track record. The reporting available does not describe how Kepler_L2 derived the numbers or how accurate past estimates have been.
How to handle future PS6 cost reports
- Check whether the source is a company statement, a teardown, or a leaker estimate. Only the first two are direct evidence.
- Confirm the figure type: BOM, total unit cost, or retail price. Treat a BOM as one input, not an answer to the price question.
- Note the report date. Estimates from mid-2026 may be superseded as the hardware details change.
- Look for the attribution trail. If a figure cannot be traced to a named source and a date, it should not be repeated as fact.
Until Sony announces the PS6’s specifications and pricing, the $960 number should be read as a leaker’s estimate of component cost, not as a measured cost or a forecast of what the console will sell for.
