Critics have praised its Sicilian atmosphere, characters, and focused presentation, while reservations include familiar storytelling, repetitive encounters, restrained missions, and technical concerns reported in some reviews. Whether it is worth playing depends largely on how much you value the setting and narrative over variety in the moment-to-moment gameplay.
What is Mafia: The Old Country?
Developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K, Mafia: The Old Country is a third-person action-adventure set in 1900s Sicily. It follows Enzo Favara, a laborer who joins Don Torrisi’s crime family. Its story-led campaign combines stealth, gunplay, and knife fights; Steam lists the game as single-player. 2K announced its worldwide release for August 8, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. 2K’s launch announcement and the Steam listing describe the game and its platforms.

What reviewers liked
Sicilian setting and atmosphere
The historical setting is one of the clearest strengths in the review coverage. Critics have highlighted the game’s sense of place and its attention to audiovisual detail. In the excerpt displayed on Metacritic, IGN called it a “conventional but effective return” to the linear, story-driven format of the earlier games and praised its “wonderful eye and ear for detail.” That is IGN’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will respond to the presentation in the same way. Metacritic’s review listing collects excerpts and scores.
Story presentation and characters
Reviewers who respond to the narrative have also praised its writing, characters, and focused approach. The game is built around a crime-family story rather than a broad sandbox, which can make its progression feel purposeful if you want the next mission to serve the plot. That same linearity is a trade-off: players looking for extensive freedom or a large set of unrelated activities may find less to do between story beats.

What reviewers criticized
Familiar story beats
Not all critics found the crime story compelling throughout. Some described the storytelling as familiar or predictable, and PC Gamer argued that the focused structure did not consistently sustain interest. A strong setting and polished presentation may help carry the experience, but they do not remove the risk that the plot will feel conventional to players who know the genre well. PC Gamer’s review discusses its reservations about the story and mission activities.
Combat, stealth, and mission variety
Criticism also centers on how the campaign plays from one encounter to the next. Some reviewers found the mission design restrained and the gameplay systems dated or repetitive. Metacritic’s review excerpts surface concerns about stealth and repeated knife encounters. If varied combat systems, elaborate stealth options, or substantial mission experimentation are your priority, this is the main reason to be cautious. Metacritic’s critic-review page shows examples of those differing assessments.

Technical performance
Performance drops appear in some review excerpts, but the available coverage does not establish a controlled comparison across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC or across later patches. The evidence therefore does not support calling one platform the definitive version. Check recent platform-specific reports and the storefront’s current system information before buying, particularly if stable performance is a deciding factor.
How the review scores compare
| Outlet or source | Score or snapshot | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| IGN, shown on Metacritic | 80/100 (2025) | A positive review that describes the game as a conventional but effective return to a linear, story-driven format. Metacritic listing |
| GameSpot | 6/10 (review dated August 6, 2025; reviewer Jake Dekker) | A more reserved assessment. GameSpot review listing |
| PC Gamer | No score stated here | Its August 12, 2025 PC review criticizes aspects of the story and mission activities. PC Gamer review |
| Steam user reviews | 70% positive from 9,578 English reviews; 73% positive from 452 recent reviews (snapshot accessed October 8, 2026) | Volatile, region-sensitive user-review snapshots—not critic scores. Steam listing |

Who is likely to enjoy it?
- A good fit: You want a single-player Mafia story, a distinctive Sicilian setting, and a campaign that prioritizes narrative over open-world freedom.
- A more uncertain fit: You enjoy crime dramas but need fresh plot turns or consistently varied missions to stay engaged.
- A weaker fit: You mainly want a large sandbox, deep stealth systems, or a wide range of combat encounters and side activities.
Campaign length and value are harder to judge from the available review information. A reviewer’s playtime is not a reliable promise of how long your own run will take, and the listed review coverage does not establish a guaranteed completion time.

Verdict: Is Mafia: The Old Country worth it?
Mafia: The Old Country is a reasonable choice if its historical setting, crime-family story, and focused format are the main draw. The review picture is less encouraging if you expect consistently inventive missions, modern-feeling combat and stealth, or an expansive sandbox. The key question is not whether the game offers a little of everything; it is whether its particular setting and narrative are enough to make a comparatively restrained campaign worthwhile for you.
