The original Doodle launched on October 31, 2016. Google later returned to the idea with a 2020 underwater sequel and a third edition in 2024, but the game most directly described by the title is the 2016 original.
How Magic Cat Academy works
Ghosts approach Momo with spell symbols displayed above them. To defeat each ghost, draw or swipe the matching symbol with your mouse or touchscreen. The faster and more accurately you reproduce the symbol, the sooner Momo casts the spell and sends the enemy away.

This gesture-based system is the game’s defining feature. The challenge comes from recognizing the symbols, reproducing them correctly, and responding before the ghosts reach Momo.
The story: Momo versus the ghosts
Momo is trying to protect the Magic Cat Academy after a master spellbook is stolen and supernatural forces attack the school. Her objective is to rescue her friends, fight through the ghost invasion, and restore peace to the academy.
Google’s materials identify Momo as a black cat inspired by the real-life cat of Doodler Juliana Chen. That connection helps explain the character’s specific design, while the game itself presents Momo as a magical student learning to defend her school.

Where to play the original game
Magic Cat Academy was designed as a browser game inside a Google Doodle, not as a conventional paid console game, mobile app, or downloadable PC title. Google Doodles normally appear prominently for a limited time, but many are preserved afterward in Google’s permanent Doodle archive. The archived Halloween 2016 entry is the appropriate official place to look for the original game.
Availability can depend on the archive page, browser, device, and current Google support for the old Doodle. If you find a page offering a similarly named mobile game or a third-party remake, treat it as a separate product rather than assuming it is the official Google game.
Magic Cat Academy sequels and related editions
| Edition | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|
| 2016 | The original Halloween Doodle, set at the Magic Cat Academy. Momo fights ghosts by drawing the symbols above them. |
| 2020 | A “subaquatic” follow-up that sends Momo underwater, where she encounters new friends and returning foes. |
| 2024 | The third edition of the series. Momo battles ghostly opponents in the atmosphere and faces Marshmallow, her ghostly nemesis. |
These editions share Momo and the gesture-drawing concept, but they are separate Halloween Doodle experiences. The underwater 2020 game and atmospheric 2024 game should not be confused with the original 2016 academy adventure.

Is it a mobile game or a downloadable game?
Not in its official Google Doodle form. Magic Cat Academy is best described as a short, single-player browser game presented through Google’s Doodle platform. It uses mouse and touchscreen gestures, which can make it feel like a mobile game, but that does not make it an official downloadable mobile app.
Be cautious with unofficial apps, clones, videos, or other games using phrases such as “magic cat.” Similar wording does not establish that a product is made by Google or connected to the Magic Cat Academy Doodle.
What makes the Doodle memorable?
- Immediate premise: you help a young magical cat defend her school from ghosts.
- Simple controls: the game turns drawing symbols into spell-casting actions.
- Quick rounds: enemies keep approaching, so accuracy and reaction speed matter.
- Distinctive character: Momo’s design was inspired by the black cat of Google Doodler Juliana Chen.
- Archival value: unlike a Doodle that disappears entirely after its homepage run, the game is preserved through Google’s Doodle archive.
What you need to know before searching for it
- Search for the formal name: Magic Cat Academy.
- Specify Halloween 2016 if you want the original rather than the 2020 or 2024 edition.
- Prefer Google’s official Doodle archive over third-party download pages.
- Do not assume a similarly named app, game, toy, costume, or cat-themed product is official merchandise or an authorized version.
- If the archived game does not load, avoid installing unknown browser extensions or executable files merely to play it.
Bottom line
Magic Cat Academy is Google’s 2016 Halloween Doodle about Momo, a magical black cat defending her school from ghosts. Draw the symbols above the approaching enemies to cast spells. The original is a browser-based Doodle preserved in Google’s archive, with underwater and atmospheric follow-ups released in 2020 and 2024.
