Choose Commander if you want a social multiplayer game built around a signature commander and a 100-card singleton deck. Choose Standard if you prefer head-to-head games, a smaller deck and card pool, and regular deck updates as sets rotate. The best fit depends less on which format is “better” than on who you can play with and how you like to build.
Commander vs. Standard: the key differences
| Factor | Commander | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Typical players | Multiplayer; Wizards lists 3–5 players. | Two players. |
| Official estimated game time | About 120 minutes. | About 20 minutes. |
| Deck construction | 100 cards including the commander; singleton, except basic lands. | At least 60 cards in the main deck; optional sideboard of up to 15 cards. |
| Card pool | Cards from a much broader span of Magic history; no Standard-style annual rotation. | Recent sets, with an annual rotation. |
| Typical appeal | Social games and a deck shaped around one commander. | Direct competition and a bounded, changing card pool. |

What’s the difference between Commander and Standard?
Commander is a multiplayer, commander-led format
A Commander deck has 100 cards, including its chosen commander. Apart from basic lands, you generally cannot include more than one copy of a card, and the deck must follow the commander’s color identity. That makes the commander a central deck-building constraint as well as a defining card to build around. The format is designed for multiplayer play, so table dynamics and the other players’ choices matter alongside your own deck.
Standard is a rotating, one-on-one format
Standard is built for two players. A deck needs at least 60 cards in its main deck and may have a sideboard of up to 15 cards. Its card pool is limited to sets currently legal in Standard, and Wizards says the six oldest sets rotate out once a year, after the year’s first premier-set Prerelease. That makes Standard more bounded than Commander, but it also means a deck may need changes to remain legal over time.

Which format is right for you?
Choose Commander if you have a group for multiplayer games
- You want to play with several people at once rather than only one opponent.
- You enjoy building around a particular commander and working within singleton and color-identity rules.
- You prefer a broad card history and do not want Standard’s annual rotation to define your deck’s legality.
- You have time for longer games; Wizards’ approximate Commander estimate is about 120 minutes.
If you are new to the format, a ready-to-play Commander preconstructed deck can be a straightforward starting point. Check the deck’s contents and current availability before purchasing.

Choose Standard if you want shorter head-to-head games
- You mainly expect to play one-on-one, including at events or a local game store.
- You prefer a 60-card minimum main deck and the option to tune a sideboard.
- You like a restricted card pool and are comfortable rebuilding or updating your deck as sets rotate.
- You want games that Wizards estimates at about 20 minutes, while recognizing actual match length varies.
Is Commander easier than Standard?
Neither is universally easier. Commander’s rules for deck size, singleton construction and color identity are distinct constraints, and multiplayer games involve more players and interactions. Standard uses a smaller minimum main deck and allows repeated copies subject to the format’s rules, but staying current means tracking set legality and rotation. For a beginner, access to a welcoming play group may matter more than the format’s technical demands.
Which format should a beginner play?
Start with the format your likely play partners already enjoy. A Commander deck is useful only if you can find a multiplayer table; a Standard deck makes sense if you have opponents or events playing Standard and are willing to check the current legal card pool. If both are available, try a game of each before committing to a collection or a long-term deck.

Check legality before you buy or play
Legality is format-specific: a card banned in one format may still be legal in another. Wizards maintains separate format rules and banned lists, so verify the relevant entries for the exact format you plan to play. Start with the official Banned & Restricted list and the Standard page for current set legality.
Wizards’ June 29, 2026 banned-and-restricted announcement made no changes to Standard and described the then-current Standard metagame as more diverse and gameplay as more varied than after Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven. That assessment is dated commentary, not a promise about the format’s future or its state today.
